- Today, Helen is teaching you her favorite lesson. Why? Helen always wants you to ask why. If you can paint a really good apple, you can then use that apple-painting expertise in all the other subject matter you encounter. Why? Because an apple has shape, texture, shine, color, and tone. Listen for her story, at the start of the lesson, about the artist she studied under, Maximillian Roscoe.

lol I can’t believe I’m the youngest in the 40’s
Another old fart here! And another new Helen convert! :))
I learned more from this lady than any other artist when I started painting!!! What a pleasure to watch this 20+ years later
If you posted all of her videos, you'd make so many artists who are inspired by Helen very happy :)
Thank you for posting. This lady is sorely missed.
When I was just a little girl, Helen started on my path as an artist because what she was doing intrigued me and fascinated me. Her enthusiasm and energy inspired me. Somehow for me and in me, she connected painting with Joy.
Best of the TV painters and much more than that. She was so smart!!
I would add best of teachers. No one presented art instruction like Helen. It was an unfulfilled dream of mine to attend one of her classes.
I'm thrilled to have access to Helen's lessons. I never saw the original airings, but she's such a lovely teacher. 🥰
Amazing! Thank you Helen. Rest in Peace.
Thanks for posting these.
I absolutely adored Helen! I went to one of her workshops and she really was a great teacher. I bought the book she wrote and it was great. I can’t believe it was 25 years ago
Helen has had a huge effect on my art self education beyond what I learned in college. Thank you for posting this.
This lady is just amazing and the way she teaches is so straightforward just magic
I just discovered this most amazing teacher! and now she's gone! ❤
Watched her every week. Loved her chirpy personality. She did have a method folks easily relate to, and, if they are astute, they will learn something. Was so sad watching her lasts vids. They were hard on her. Thanks for the posts.
Love these videos. Would love to see that lesson on edges she’s talking about at the end❤
I'll certainly hunt for that particular video and post when located.
"Do not paint an apple, paint THE apple." -Henri Matisse
Thank you for the great gift of learning painting from Helen. Blessings
What a great teacher! Thank you Mrs. VanWyk! You just gained a subscriber.
I love watching Helen paint 🎨❤❤❤
I learned so much from all her books! Still learning from them!
I loved Helen.
She was the best by far...and a true serious artist. I learned so much from her in the early 1990's.
very beautiful thank you
I truly enjoy watching you and listening to you. You’re marvelous, and inspiring! The first video I watched of you was the way you believed the old masters had probably painted to save on their colors. I just thought that was absolutely brilliant!! I understand glazing now!
I used to just paint large smooth granite rocks with acrylic paint and got many compliments. Even though they happened to turn out quite good they were still on a rock.
After losing my left hand to multiple sclerosis, just the feeling ,I had to give up all of my hobbies and money makers such as jewelry and miniature clay pieces and other crafts that took both hands. So I decided to start watercoloring. I realized how different that medium was to acrylics real fast!! It took a while to use the light of the canvas and go from there. I’ve achieved some decent greeting cards, but not large pieces.
I recently got attracted to gel printing so I had to purchase more acrylic paints for my printing. Then I say “ColorByFeliks” on CZcams and saw a painting (acrylic) that I was just itching to paint . Do now I’m being drawn back into acrylics.
Acrylics are what you are using correct? Not oil? I’ve never tried oil. Do you have videos on oil painting?
I want to thank you for sharing your talent and wisdom!! His bless you.
BTW, what’s Gertrude’s last name as me? If you don’t mind. If you would rather not I understand.
Have a wonderful evening, morning, afternoon or what ever time of day it is you way. Do I hear a New your accent? I used to live in the south shore of Long Island but had to relocate to my home land . Ventura Ca. I live in Taft Ca. Now. Nog the best place we’d to live , but it’s home. I’m 58 and my 84 yr. Old mom takes care of me . 😊 she loves my painting, but she is biased. Thank goodness her husband used to be an acrylic and oil paint instructor ! My most recent painting got his best response yet!! It was in acrylic though!! When I do a piece In watercolor that gets great reviews then I can start selling my paintings.
I’m so sorry, this is supposed to be about you!!! You’re beautiful and fun to spend time with via TV.
PS I NOTICED A SPARKLY SHINE IN THe PAINTING OF THE APPLES. Is it just the water making it look sparkly?
First of all, thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately, Helen passed away in 1994 and cannot answer you directly. However, the glazing technique Helen demonstrated is done using thinned oil paint over a dried acrylic underpainting. The majority of Helen's lessons will be done using oil paints and the apples are being painted with oil paints, so the shine you observed is from the glossy, wet oil. Thanks again and keep exploring and enjoying your painting journey!
Além de ser uma pintora muito talentosa, é uma mulher muito bonita.
Sim. Muito verdadeiro. Obrigado pela visita e pelo apoio. espero que você esteja gostando das aulas de Helen.
Love her videos!!
Thank you!!!
17:07 there are 5 sections to every Apple. Slice one horizontally to see a five sided star design.
She knew her business too well❤
Make sense ... apples are green
before the fruits turn red.
What a woman
👍👍👍
“…and also, an apple would like to be in a nice situation.”
Right? ...and why not... Helen has some unique ways of saying things.
What's the stick she holds in her right hand popping out of the pallette?
@ManushriAnand - Hello and welcome. It's called a mahl stick, also known as a mahlstick. Helen uses it to steady her brush hand while painting finer details. She places it on the edge of the canvas or easel and rests her brush-hand on it.
Good evening Master Helen🌹what color you use in all your lesson acrylic color or oil color❓❓thank you 🙏🌹
Sad to say, Helen died in 1994, so she cannot answer you directly. She was a fantastic artist and teacher. In the vast majority of her lessons, Helen used oil paint. She did use acrylic in many of her underpaintings and usually mentioned its use at the start of the lesson, if applicable. Thanks for your question and support.
Iam arabic person…my languge is very weak and bad…but l realy shock and sad to the news …lam so sorry 😔💔💔💔

Interesting to see another Bob Ross, an artist that can teach with a wonderful personality. Where’s she been hiding all these years?
This takes me back to snow days and watching PBS all day. What is the stick she is holding?
