  • This concludes our "panel discussion" (i.e. 3 cousins reflecting on the Wilson Brothers' first album from 1973). I regret that I did so much talking. I should have allowed Brian and Maria to contribute more. Sometimes I get going and don't know when to stop. :-) We enjoyed making this video. It isn't perfect (like the crumpled-up Walmart bag I left in the floor below the table), but maybe it can generate some renewed interest in this album. In addition to making the tracks available for download, I also hope to make the album available again one day on vinyl. We still have a box of 20-25 original press records. Once upon a time, I felt these should be saved, but now I think they should be sold so they can be out there in the world, out there being played and enjoyed. Lord willing, we'll eventually post them for sale and get new copies printed. I'll close with one thought that I left out and one note that might help some listeners understand one point in the commentary. 1) When I said that Ray provided most of the guitar picking for the Wilson Brothers over the years, I forgot to say that he also played mandolin for many years as well, in live performances and in recordings. 2) The place in "You'll Be Rewarded Over There" that I was talking about when describing the runs that Ray made during the steel break can be heard at 8:51 through 8:57. Thanks for watching, and we hope to upload our 5th annual train song series in November.

I've never listened to a lot of gospel music, but I've really enjoyed these two videos! The music is great! But the commentary really takes it over the top!! Tks for doing this & sharing w/ the YT community!

Thanks, Johnny. I was afraid the commentary part might be seen as a hindrance to hearing the music. I'm glad it wasn't. I'll upload the whole album one day.

Love you guys. What a set of memories to have. Always dreamed of a family band, as as a kid, our family had a lot of talent , but never did a family music event.

Again, wow! You did absolutely fantastic with reviewing this album song by song. The two videos in this series were both very enjoyable to hear. Thank you to you, Brian and Maria. I can’t give enough applause to you three. I would love to see a video like this for each of the other albums the Wilson Brothers recorded. And again, there are so many thoughts running through my head, and notes that I took as I listened through these videos, too many to cover in this comment. But I feel I can’t give a blanket statement saying only a few praising words as my comment, either. I want you to know that I truly listened to every word spoken, and that you gave me pause for thought and contemplation all the way through both videos. I know I don’t get many “likes” on my comments because they are so long and boring. Truthfully, though, I don’t care. I am not here to win a popularity contest of “likes”. When I write a comment to you, Paul, it is from my own heart for you, and a lot of times they are from what the Lord lays on my heart to say. I know I tend to stray off the topic of the video, and I sort of apologize for that, but I am me, so I don’t know if I should feel sorry for being my rambling self. I don’t copy others in my words or actions. I have always followed my own beat/tune. I know of others who copy me, and then take the credit for what I said first, and that is frustrating. But God has given me comfort by whispering to me that He sees all hearts, and He knows what’s happening even if others don’t. So I guess that is kind of like how the Wilson Brothers didn’t get their original songs copyrighted, and others then copied them. God knows all of it. And I know the blessings they have received for serving God far outweighs the pettiness of being frustrated over copycats. In their case, hopefully those that copied their music, truly reached the unsaved with these convicting words of truth. Their sound is their own, as their voices and talents were from God to them. They had the best sound ever. I do want to note one observation I made in particular. As I was looking at the picture you posted with the song “I Won’t Have to Pass to Jordon Alone”, I noticed the arm representing Christ is much larger than the man’s arm reaching up to grasp it. The thought flashed through my mind that is because Jesus is much larger than anything we are going through. We just have to put our tiny self into His great big arms. He will never fail us by letting us fall. Thank you for another terrific video!

Donna, thanks for your insightful comment and of course for watching. Your faith will serve you well all of your life. I didn't mean to imply in the video that anyone copied Pap and Ray. Their songs, or at least their album, was copyrighted. However, they never joined BMI so that BMI could collect royalties for them and send them the money. When I said the songs were played thousands of times, I meant that radio stations played this record that many times. It's all good though. Pap and Ray were actually supposed to pay something called mechanical royalties to the Louvins and the writers of I Won't Have to Cross Jordan Alone, Almost Persuaded, and O, Why Not Tonight when these records were printed, but they did not. They didn't fail to do it because they were stingy. They just didn't understand or know the process. It's pretty common for amateur musicians not to pay their royalties, but usually, the record sales are small enough that the amount of money is somewhat negligible. When I released the Shepherd of My Soul CD, I paid $27 in mechanical royalties to the estate of Stuart Hamblin. :-) Soon I will pay mechanical royalties to the writers of the hymns Pap sang on the Live to Never Die CD (unless those songs are so old that they're public domain). I'll have to do some research. Thanks again and have a great week.

Thanks, Jimmy. That's her given name, but she has always preferred "Tipper," which was a nickname srarted by my brother when they were kids. Tipper was just a baby, not quite able to walk, and Steve thought she was going to tip over. :-)

I am delighted to see this and I will listen. It's been on my mind to suggest that y'all might consider releasing "We've Almost Forgotten God". THEN I realized you already have. I don't believe you want us trying to add links, or I would put it here. THANK YOU for all of this, all the work that went into sharing this wonderful music.

Love this video as much as the one for side A. I think my most favorite on this side is We’re just Rehearsing. I could listen to it on repeat. The entire album is good. Thank you for sharing it with us. Look forward to what you share next.

Thanks so much, AClark! Glad you enjoyed it. JR is a great song. :-) Pap and Ray may have sung it more than any other song in their live shows, often as their opening song.

Chordie is a website with at least a million songs. You don't have to read music to get the chords to any song you can name. Often there are versions made by different people of the same song. The way you use a cappo, all you need to see is the chord patterns which it has. I don't play anymore but I wonder if your familys songs are on it too.

Hi, Paul!! I have been thinking everyday about all you said in your first video of this two part series, and from what you said in Tipper’s video on the new CD you just released of your Dad’s songs. I find every word you say very interesting, so in my eyes you never talk too much! I have been crazy busy since I got up this morning - so can be the life of the self employed (- but I would have my life no other way. I enjoy being me. Does that sound conceited, or simply content? For i really am content. 😊). As always, I will listen more to this video and write my thoughts later. You did an excellent series on this album. I, too, would have a hard time selling (or giving away in any way) those original Words of Life albums, but I agree with what you said about getting this wonderful recording out to the world so it can be heard and enjoyed by many, which was the original intent of the Wilson Brothers. Maybe the original ones that you sell can be signed by you and the rest of your family and cousins, in lieu of the original brothers signing them. I think that would add such a personal value to those records. Ok. I will be quiet now, and get back to being busy. I love all that you are doing for your Dad’s music. And even if, as you said in your reply to me in your last video post which I am loosely paraphrasing here, (forgive me!) - even if you feel you could never do enough in serving God if you dedicated your energy 24 hours a day to doing things for Him - you truly are serving Him with all your waking hours by thinking of these projects you do with your family’s music, and working on them when you can. In my devotions this morning, I read in Nehemiah where he took a break from rebuilding the wall and city of Jerusalem to return to his job working for King Artaxerxes I. He was still a mighty servant of God, doing what God called him to do, yet holding a day job and living his daily life. You are doing so much more than you give yourself credit for. What’s the old saying about not being able to see everything because we are standing in the deep of the forest? Or something to that affect. You always make my heart smile, and I know you are a man after God’s heart despite your being human. Don’t make yourself feel less than your true worth in gold ❤
    Donna. : )

Entering a restaurant the other day, I was moved to comfort a mother who's 2 year old boy was crying as they were waiting for their lunch. As I passed by their table to be seated, I Luke six forty fived loudly enough for the tables around them to hear... ''I'm about that hungry too son! I'd cry right along with you; if they wouldn't put me in jail.'' Her discomfort lifted as the tables around her laughed out in unison.
    Saw a truthful T-Shirt I thought I'd share with Y'all...
    Normal Won't Return
    But Jesus Christ Will
Wished I knew who'd sold them. They'd be free to use my following quote...
    His Spent & Risen
    Life Matters Most
    Or Ours Never Would
''All this talk about equality. The only thing people really have in common is that they are all going to die.'' ~Bob Dylan (2014)

Thank you so much for this comment. I bet your comment did really help that mother see that her son crying wasn't as big a deal as she may have thought. I love that shirt too. Actually, pretty profound. Thanks for sharng the Dylan quote. Though I think we have more in common than that, I know why he said it. I think that's part of the point Pap was trying to get across in his song Live to Never Die. One line says, "There's one thing that just won't change, and no one can deny: the very plain and simple truth, we live, yet we die." One of my favorite verses from Dylan: "I've been walking 40 miles of bad road. If the Bible is right, this world will explode. I been trying to get as far away from myself as I can. Some things are too hot to touch. The human mind can only stand so much, and we can't win with a losing hand."

@@BlindPigAndTheAcornBest of timing in the release of those songs of Pap. Between the Feast of Trumpets & Yom Kippur Y'all! Bob's the (reluctant modern day prophet) in these; our ongoing book of Acts. It is the 3:16 of John written upon hearts of Christians that's mirrored upon the 3:16 scroll of Malachi. See Y'all there.
