    People always discuss who is the best midfielder in EPL history. Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard. In the modern era you could put KDB in the list. But to me, Keane is the greatest midfielder in EPL history. He was the engine of the team and dominated the centre of the pitch in a way I've never seen anyone come close to.

      100% agree with your comment. He never ever had a bad game in all of his 13 years at Utd. He was a skilful player too, he never gets credit for that either.

      I always say Keane or Vieira the two most dominant premier league midfielder players they could both tackle carry the ball pass score you a goal they had everything.

    Gave 100% every week. No talking to the opposition in the tunnel- every match was a battle to be fought and won. Massive respect for the man.

      He wasn't a fighter type player he was a technical player,one of the best passers of the ball. Most that played with him say he was best passer they played with including Rooney and everyone who played with him pretty much say he was best played with

Keane doesn't brag about his ability, in interviews he says he was very fortunate to have good team mates around him but the truth is, he was a supreme player. You might be confusing his lack of flair for a lack of ability. Scored crucial goals, fantastic range and weight of pass, kept possession whilst passing forward most of the time, critical interceptions and robust tackling - what more do you want? Name 5 better players in his position. Name one who came away with getting the better of him when you tally up the matches against each other - I can help you out by eliminating a few names because Keane dominated the head to heads with the likes of Vieira, Gerrard, Davids and co. Put some respect on his name.

    Some may of had more talent, some have scored more, some could run faster, but there has never been a more consistently good player in PL History than Roy Keane. No-one 👍

    Even after all this time I still re-watch that semi-final match against Juve and even now to this day watching Keane during that match sends shivers down my spine. That performance that night should go down as one of the greatest individual performances of one player during a match of all time, in the same shadow as Maradona against England in '86, Rossi against Brazil '82 and Zidane against Brazil in '98.

    The older I get the more I love Roy. All those red cards and yellow cards were just part of the job, he wouldn't be the player he was without that fire. An honorary mention of the Holland game in 2001 when he almost single-handedly career us to the World Cup. He is also a superb podcast co-host

    This is how good Roy Keane was, he had a career threatening injury, returned a year later and was one of the driving forces in helping Man Utd win the treble during a time when Squads were still a new thing, so keeping players fit was crucial, in a time in Europe where the big clubs in Europe really were monsters. Imagine having to fight in 3 fronts where arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, back home, in Europe you fighting Barcelona, juventus, inter Milan, Bayern Munich were the constant challengers, that’s without contending with ac Milan, Roma, Florentino and the European champions Real Madrid. But yeh that’s his strong the competition was, if you avoid Real Madrid Barcelona are ready for you, you avoid ac Milan there was Inter Milan and juventus coming for you that had in the Italian league in Ronaldo, zidane, David’s and didier deschamps, there was no hiding and no easy route when too many clubs were that good

    Anyone who watched him play knows he is the first player on any team sheet… people have a recency bias when they talk about ‘best premier league players/midfielders’… The most underrated player in any recent discussions. The man was immense

    I'd take prime keane in my team over anyone who ever graced the premier league. As an all around player, and a force in the dressing room/he is unmatched.

    Roy Keane definitely wasn't born into a middle class family. He was a great player, should have been way higher than 6th in the '99 Ballon d'Or.

      Americans mean working class when they say middle class. Steinbeck when talking about socialism not taking root in America said they all see themselves as temporarily embarassed millionaires and that's really the heart of it, nobody in America wants to see themselves as the bottom rung of the ladder.

      @davidpryle3935 usually the upper middle class or they just split the workforce into blue collar and white collar, they don't really have as static a class system as france, britain and india as social mobility is the driving factor behind their whole national mythos

    He was better than Zidane and every team in those days would of preferred Keane over him as everyone seems to forget that Zidane was always inconsistent and not wanted by his teans fans most of the time, people just remember Zidane hogh points and forget that he didn't perform week in week out and most fans wanted him gone. Keane made every player play out there skin! And if he needed to he could of just done the Lampard role basically doing nothing but getting in the box trying to get a goal but like Scholes he wanted to be involved more. Easier better then every midfielder the premiership has seen

    To say he made the most of his talent is a bit harsh, that talent was world-class. The engine, the drive, the determination, they are talents that he crafted, and his technical ability is up there with any midfielder who played in the position.

    I fundamentally disagree that you couldn’t build a team around Keane. You kind of miss the point of everything you said - his positioning, the metronome like passing, knowing when to go and when to hold, and his leadership - that’s literally what you’re building around. If he played today, he would be the perfect single pivot in a possession oriented team or an 8 in a gegenpressing 4-3-3. He sits in the middle of the pitch, the foundation of the spine - then you build around him.

He had a great range of passing, eye for a goal, great at dictating tempo and turned up in the big games. 4 x PFA team of the year and team of the century. Only 3 career goals behind Iniesta

      Quick passer, great touch, deep understanding of tempo, excellent timing of runs, great attacking and defensive positioning, endless engine. Not to mention all the intangibles. The best midfielder the prems ever seen and no one currently is anywhere near him.
