I would argue that Cory was correct in following the tempo. Petar was changing rhythm and time signature to try and mess with him, but tempo shouldn’t count because it inherently affects the time between notes. If Petar sped up and Cory didn’t follow, then suddenly Cory would be the one playing a different rhythm, not Petar!

Man, this drummer is an amazing master at highlighting the syllables of the other instrument (in this case the bass). It really brings the magic out of the music, for every section of that overly simplistic bass line he was able to really compliment it and make it a worthy sounding lick with the utilization of so many different variations. His tempo, speed, syncopation, colorful highlights and just his overall fitting of the drums around the sound is impeccable. Also, even though the bass line wasn't that great I am impressed with the bass guy able to keep almost perfect timing, he did go slightly off sometimes but that is to be expected with such dramatic changes in tempo/speed etc... Very impressive matey!

I played in a band that routinely tried to pull out the rug from each other while we were rehearsing. I'm releasing the first of four albums has fall and a lot of the songs have the exact rug pulls and recoveries recorded but actually turned out fine.
It's from my band in the seventies. I wrote about 80 songs and so far have been able to remaster about four albums worth out of the recording sessions at bars parties and in the basement.
Things very similar to what you're talking about here. Guitar not coming in on his part then you look over and he's just laughing at you.. then he comes in. I think it made me a better drummer because I'm more reactive to situations someone plays out of time Etc.
Their songs when the bass player starts really fast and I have to try to figure out how to slow everything down without making it obvious. That's always a fun one.
Then there's the givebacks or the telegraph what you're doing very clearly. All in good fun!

@@porter2024 the 1st album is called, "Rock Remains Supreme ".
      I am on a mission to save Rock'nRoll !
The recordings are from the "Beer Sucking Dog" sessions in the mid to late 70s and early 80s.
I wrote the songs in 1969-1979 but most of them 1969-1975.
i didn't release them for many reasons. the main one being I didn't know the biz and figured I'd lose the rights to some scheister music exec. I didn't want to end up like Fogarty or Pat Travers who couldn't even play their own music.
so, I just kept playing and writing music.
it took a long time to find players who didn't want to just play covers, so, just to keep playing (drums/vocals) I played in cover bands . big waste of time . I figured I could try to get them to play original music but as it turned out I would meet 2 guys who actually wanted to work on my stuff. So, we formed a 3-piece power trio & the party started!
So, we just started recording everything and it kept developing into a unique sound everyone knew.
Skip fwd to today I learned a lot, the internet etc... everyone loves classic & hard rock but it's all overplayed. I have 4+ albums that should have been released back in the day and who knows? I could have gotten lucky but odds were not good. But, I do have classic rock from the day and everyone who has heard it says it sounds like something they've hear but it's not.
So, I'm gonna release some "new old" classic hard rock. Much more to the story. did you see the song link?

This reminds me of sessions I’ve engineered with Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Haslip. 😂. Poor Jimmy would have to hold it down while Vinnie would do his thing. Jimmy was a rock though, never wavered. I remember Vinnie did a solo on Michael Frank’s “Remembering Take 5” where he super imposed a 4/4 rock groove onto the triplets, using his floor Tom as the kick and snare for back beat, while maintaining the standard take 5 kick/snare pattern (in 5/4) with his feet (kick and hihat pedal). So the Tom/snare rock groove would cycle every 8 triplets (cuz it was in 4/4) while the bars would cycle every 15 triplets (5/4 triplets). Vinnie kept the pattern going and going until the rock groove eventually cycled around and landed on the 1 of a 5/4 bar… but while he was doing it everyone except him and Jimmy completely lost where the beats where and where the original 5/4 pattern was. It was one of those 😱😱😱 moments… sadly that solo didn’t make it on the record. 😥. They felt it was too “out” for the MicGael Franks audience. 😔
