    What can you do about a nippy fish? Who hasn't had a fish that was a nipper at some point in their fish keeping life? Who wants to watch a tank full of fish chasing each other and constant nipping? I sure don't!
    Some of the tricks from my years of keeping African Cichlids can be successfully applied to South American, Central American and New World Cichlids. In this particular case, one fish, a Geophagus surinamensis (Red Striped Earth Eater), was getting into too many chases, being a jerk fish nipper. I decided to do something about it and it worked for me! Maybe it will work for you?
    Have you had a fish that got too nippy? A jerk fish that loved to chase and annoy other fish? Not that crazy super aggressive killer behavior that we sometimes see with the most aggressive fish. What I'm talking about is that fish that is a pest to other fish, creates stress and sometimes makes it hard for the other fish to get to the food or relax. Did you have to deal with that? What did you do to fix it? Did it work? Share your tips, experience, thoughts and suggestions in the comment section below.
    Never forget the motto of this channel is ALWAYS BE LEARNING! And we all learn from each other here, so feel free to share your experiences.

    New sub here, I have been watching your videos but never subbed. I am a fish breeder of high end exotic Guppies however and I breed albino and snow turtles from around the world. As it opens the doors for me to be able to sell them both in reptile shows and fish shows also. And I will let you know that there is a virtual "fish show expo that will be going on at the end of next month also with actual breeders as the vendors. I got a first hand look at the development of it over this past week but a to say the least, it's impressive all the way through. The developer is one of the main Walmart / asda web developers with the experience needed and seo background. I know about you favorite pet store provider as I had a sales rep who sold them some of my turtles in the past diamondback terripan babies a few years ago but I never dealt with them personally as I am based in Florida.

    I'm having the same trouble with my Geophagus tank. I have 4 sveni, 4 red tapajos, and 4 winemerilli with 6 German Blue rams. The 4 Sveni (are growing faster than all my other Geophagus, and are about 4 inches, while the others are about 2 inches) are nipping the life out of my Winemerilli and Tapajos, so I should add more of them, or add more Sveni (culprits)?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 3 lety

      A little bit of everything, but if it’s getting tight in there I suggest that you add more of the fish that are getting nipped to spread the aggression. Also, if there’s one fish that is being a jerk you might want to remove him. Don’t forget to add filtration and/or increase water changes as your stock numbers increase and your fish put on size.

      @@BenOchart Hi Ben. I don't remember if you've mentioned it or not, but does your new house have a generator in case the power goes out? Probably not an issue in SoCal (NoHo?) but might be in Nashville.

      @@BenOchart I have a Generac GP 7500 which has done the job for us. It is gasoline powered and "portable". I also had a Transfer Switch installed next to our breaker box. This makes it simple to switch between the electric service and the generator. It has 6 of our circuits wired to it. Definitely worth having installed if you go with a portable generator. We tried to do our best to come up with the 6 circuits to wire up; oil burner, refrigerator, freezer were no brainers. I do have to use a heavy duty extension cord to power the fish tanks.
      The one downside of a portable generator is that you should run the generator once in a while and watch out for bad/old gasoline. I can't say Generac is better or worse than others, but I will say don't go cheap. I'm no expert by any means.
      Another thing no one seems to tell you is that apparently you can ruin your generator by letting it run out of gas. I googled it once and was shocked at the horror stories that popped up.
      Our neighborhood does not have a natural gas line so a standby generator was not an option for us unless we wanted to rent propane tanks. Standbys also seem to be more expensive which could be worth it if one is younger and plans to be in the house for a long time. And I guess one should add the number of power outages/year to the equation is a standby worth it. I think with a standby, you don't need the transfer switch.

    More likely a Geophagus Altifrons, as Surinamensis are pretty much impossible to get hold of in the hobby. Unless things are different over your side of the pond. They also do way better in groups of 8 or more. Will always be more aggressive when they're on their own.
