I once fell for that lie that I should be shampooing less often to "train my scalp" to produce less oil. Long story short, I made the Malassezia on my scalp really happy and well fed. I'm never falling for those lies again 😂

I’m relieved to see this - my hair does well with washing twice a week (after training), but my 12 year old daughters hair looks slick with oil the DAY AFTER shampooing, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to help her. She has only been shampooing once a week her whole life, so I was confused why it was so oily after all that once-a-week “training” 🫣

@@veronicaivanova"Training" your scalp only works if your scalp isn't actually oily. Normal skin will produce more oil if it is washed too often. What happens when you wash less often is the scalp returns to its normal oil production. If you truly have an oily scalp due to genetics and hormones, no amount of "training" will change it.

Thank you for the clarification (pun totally intended) on hair washing myths!! There’s sooo many people who will lecture you if you tell them you wash your hair everyday. Including hair stylists, mine has said, “I can’t believe your hair is so healthy even though you wash it everyday!” I believed the myths for years until my dermatologist told me that my dandruff was from oil buildup and I needed to be shampooing everyday. Amazingly everyday washes with good scrubbing of the scalp has made my scalp happy and even reversed my hair loss. I’ve made peace now with the fact that I am just oily (my skin is oily all over) lol

Thanks, Dr. Dray, for once again addressing the "hair training" myth. My longtime haircutter was a proponent of daily washing. Besides the buildup of sebum and product, she believed that hair is effective at trapping environmental pollutants, dust and allergens which are then transferred to our pillows while we sleep. If you suffer from seasonal allergies and don't want to wash your hair every day, she recommended changing your pillowcase daily. I'm a bit too lazy to follow either of her suggestions (I wash my hair twice a week; but don't use any styling products) but she owned a LEED certified "Green" salon, so I did respect her opinion.
Another tip was to rinse the hair very, very thoroughly and massage the scalp even before using the shampoo in order to break up and rinse out as much built up dirt/oil/product as possible first, so that I would, hopefully, only need one application of the very gentle but somewhat pricey shampoo I was using. However, she wouldn't hesitate to go in for a second lather if she felt it was needed. Her philosophy was healthy hair plus a great haircut are foundational, but your hair and scalp aren't healthy if they are dirty and/or damaged by toxic dyes and products.

Oily scalp here! I’ve gone from daily shampoo to every other day, which works until about 6 PM on day 2. Someone gave me a jar of a scalp treatment containing salt. Although I was probably too aggressive the first time I used it, it gave me an appreciation for how clean a scalp can be. Don’t use many hair products - just a spray on conditioner that I use only mid length to the ends. My hair is just too fine to tolerate a heavier conditioner or too much gunk. I continue to use the salty scalp paste twice a month in the summer heat and as needed during the colder months.

I shampoo every day and usually shampoo twice each time then condition the ends (or else my hair strands end up dry). It doesn’t matter what I do, my hair ends up oily after a day. I don’t know if it’s actually reducing the amount of oil that I produce BUT I’ve noticed that my hair is significantly less oily when I shampoo very very gently. I also reduce the amount of hair I lose in the shower. So, for those who have really oily hair, that might help.

What is puzzling to me is with my oily skin, I have not ever been prone to break out. When I had a cycle, every now & again I would have a breakout. Granted, I worked for Clinique cosmetics when I was in my twenties. Clinique emphasizes exfoliation. And at the time, they utilized salicylic acid, still do. Great video as always ❤️ as a girl who suffers from oily scalp for years I’ve been fed with the lie of “ train your hair so that it doesn’t produce oil” by leaving it month not washing 😅 I comeplelty debunked that myth long time ago and really feel the difference ever since I properly clean my scalp and my hair feels better every time also I haven’t tried any clarifying shampoo yet even though my hair salon recommended me one to buy . I’m thinking about buying the Giovanni tree tea clarifying shampoo can you help guide me if it’s good or bad??

I heard your recommendations for ingredients for those with a dandruff-y buildup but for those *without* that problem, are there any ingredients to look for or avoid? I was told by a hair stylist on TikTok who applied a ton of products to her client’s curly hair that if my scalp starts smelling after one day after washing it, I need to see a doctor. I refused to respond. The scalp needs to be washed everyday, particularly if you live in a hot climate like Houston’s scorching summer. My pillow needs to be clean. Enough said.

I’ used Wen several years ago, too, but luckily, I gave up on it because my scalp just didn’t feel clean. However, I had Covid back in August, but didn’t experience hair loss until mid-September! I lost four handfuls of hair while shampooing! I was alarmed, but the next time I washed my hair (two days later), I only lost two handfuls. I’m currently down to one handful of hair lost per wash, and my part is widening! Fortunately, I have a dermatology appointment next week.

I would love a video on scalp care for those of us with ultra-dense hair follicles. Even when my hair is only chin length, it becomes almost impossible to get most products onto my scalp. I'm using a scalp brush for shampoo but i dont think I'm getting in there. This density also seems to dramatically effect my hair type, with each inch of growth resulting in my routine becoming ineffective. Help! I do have very hard water, an added product or step is doable if frugal, but getting culligan water softener services is not. I kind of wanted to grow my hair a bit for winter, but my perfect routine is now useless & i may buzz it just to reset.
