Today we take a look at the Dictionnaire Infernal otherwise known as the Infernal Dictionary, written by Jacques Collin de Plancy. This manuscript delves into many of the lesser known and forgotten demons as well as the practices and beliefs surrounding the occult.

Le Dictionnaire Infernal by J.Collin de Plancy is indeed an interesting dictionary to read. Over 700 pages long too. The 6th edition from 1863, published by Henri Plon, is illustrated with 550 engravings by Louis Le Breton. This adds a lot of flavor to Le Dictionaire infernal.
Fair warning: it's written in French.

This very much resembles the Goetia and related 'Keys of Solomon' bestiaries/grimoires. This guy looks to have adapted these into French. It's still being adapted as lots of these demons appear as minor and major characters in 'Castlevania: Symphony of The Night', then other 2D games in the series that followed it. The resemblance of the characters to these demonology book illustrations is uncanny. VERY interesting subject matter, here 👍
It's available in English translation, the ultimate edition is quite beautiful, with whole page illustrations of each demon.
Where can i read this?
Abraxas is actually quite more complex than the role given to him in the Infernal dictionary. A video about him might be interesting.
Several would fit best, that being is yeah I will not go there. But have and learned how to deal with him and all of his copies.

I think you should do this type of summery for every demon in the book as it would be a great launch point to look the individual demons themselves.

I was curiously enough not aware of this work yet but I do recognize a couple of the names featured in it as also being featured in a show I watched recently about a kid who goes to school in the demon world.

All the demons in Iruma-kun are named after demons from the Ars Goetia (the first book in the Lesser Key of Solomon). The Infernal Dictionary later borrowed most of its demons from the Ars Goetia, along with some other demonic figures from non-Christian mythologies.

This book used several Grimoires along side Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which uses Ars Goëtia as its source, and also is the source for the book The Lesser Key of Solomon

@@pickchickens5286 yes and no, it isn't explicitly mentioned as Ars Goëtia, but De Plancy almost outright copied certain passages from another writer that inspired him, who happened to write a contribution to Ars Goëtia research. More like Ars Goëtia adjacent, especially considering he used the names of several deities of different faiths as demonic names
Goetia is Jewish and this is seen as Christian, both are incredibly wrong about these gods ❤

I've experimented with Solomonic spirit evocation without success, following all instructions as laid out in the grimoire's - performing all the correct procedures for consecration, purifications and fasting, prayers, chanting the conjunctions, observing the planetary hours and moon phases, using the appropriate seals and lamens, the correct incense, circle construction etc., I'm convinced the problem I've been having is the very inappropriate environment I have to work in.

I noticed that some characters by J.K. Rowling were named accordingly to some of the mentioned demons and their characteristics. As in Abraxas. Abraxas Malfoy. Alastor also shares characteristics with the character Moody.

Thor, Odin, Loki, Cali, Brahma, Isis and Hécate are indeed mentioned but not always in great detail. For example, the Norse gods only get one line of text as they are already widely known.
No mention of Vishnu, Durga and Pluto.

The demons seem to originate from Canaanite gods that ancient Hebrews vilified and from folk creatures which the early church also vilified.
That is the case for most of them. Some were just entirely made up in earlier works like the Ars Goetia and Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, and a few are just random deities from other religions that De Plancy for some reason interpreted as demonic.
Yeah most christian demons are just old christians labeling other religion's gods or folklore creatures as evil
