Ferrari Roma v Aston Martin DB11 AMR v Bentley Continental GT | The world's best grand tourer?

  • What's the world's greatest grand tourer? They are coupes that blend comfort and sport to the highest degree.
Could it be the new for 2021 Ferrari Roma? It is fabulous. And fast. It has a 3.9-litre twin turbocharged V8 making 612bhp and 561lb ft, which is enough to propel this 1570kg car from 0-62mph in 3.4sec and on to a top speed of 199mph. In the UK, the Roma's price is £170,984 before options.
Or could it be the Bentley Continental GT? Also recently revised, the GT V8 has a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8, slightly down on power on the Ferrari, but still making a fulsome 542bhp and 568lb ft. This 4wd car is the heaviest one here, at 2149kg, and completes the 0-62mph dash in 4.0sec and goes on to a 198mph top speed. It costs from £166,200.
Finally, then, is the Aston Martin DB11 AMR. Because this is the AMR model it has nothing less than a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, making some 630bhp and 516lb ft. Like the Ferrari it's rear-wheel drive, so weighs less than the Bentley, at 1870kg, and is good for a 0-62mph sprint in 3.7sec and has a 208mph top speed. It costs from £178,495 and, on paper, looks like it sits somewhere between the Ferrari and Bentley in terms of size and sportiness.
How, though, will that turn out on the road? Join Matt Prior as he sets out to find the world's greatest GT car.

Love the Roma and the direction they went in with the styling. Most modern cars seem too complicated and over-styled, but the Roma is so simplistic and elegant, reminds me of 90s Ferraris like the 456 and 550 Maranello.

I fully agree, and Ferrari were one of the worst with the messy over-styled designs so it's nice to see them calm down and make something beautiful. As an owner of a 575, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful modern Ferrari's, the Roma is a modern interpretation of the great GTs in the back catalogue. I'm just not a fan of the interior. I've sat in one and I don't enjoy the centre section which divides the car. And I'm still undecided on the front grill. But no doubt it's a great driver's car.

Because in many cases, what used to take 1 button press or turn of a knob now needs to be navigated to through various menus and tabs. That in of itself can be dangerous especially if you need to divert your attention to see if your inputs were correct.
The Germans are starting to realize this and have started adding buttons back in or at the very least shortcuts via presets programmed to a physical button/switch. Examples being physical controls being added back on for Audi e-tron GT or the M1/2 and RS1/RS2 on high-end BMWs and Audis.
Screens aren't bad but moderation is key in both design and life. How badly do you think those 2/3rd dashes in MBs will age? A screen has a dead pixel or burn-in? You gotta live with that for the next couple of years now or replace the entire unit.
It's why smartwatches will never replace a precision made automatic. The value doesn't come from the function necessarily. It comes from how much thought and care was put into crafting said thing that gives it character.
I'd rather have something that does it's one job extremely well rather than something that tries to do 5 at a passable level.

As a pure GT, I'd say the Bentley is the best here : one of the best interiors on the market (for me), very luxurious, high quality materials and finishes, very practical since you can have 3 passengers comfortably sat and still have room for luggages. And still, the V8 or the W12 allows the Bentley to be a really sporty and fun car to drive.
However, I am obsessed with the Roma. Ferrari did a really good job on this one. I think it perfectly embodies Ferrari's DNA : pure italian elegance, great looking and very sporty car. The sound of the V8 is pure music to the ear and the interior looks as elegant as the exterior.
It would be really hard for me to choose between the two since they are both among my favorite cars ever.

Completely agree with your analysis of these 3 wonderful cars. Bentley for that trip to the south of France but Ferrari for the roads you were on or through the alps to Italy. Beautiful exterior AND interior. Aston - you need to make the interior worthy of that gorgeous exterior. Totality agree with your comments on buttons v screens. The mantra for displays and controls seems to be "We can so we will" with little regard for actual functionality. Not related to these cars - but same thing outside - I don't want my lights to do dances for me, Their purpose is to see and be seen and to signal your intentions to other drivers (and pedestrians)- But then, most drivers seem to have forgotten what indicators are for these days! Pet hate - the number of drivers who appear to be unaware that half their lights are not working!

For true Grand Touring, the Bentley is the only real choice as it was designed to be a GT from the ground up. The A/M and Ferrari lean more towards sports cars due to their better handling dynamics and, of course, engine note (and lack of a usable back seat). If you want a 'cross-over' GT/sports car, one designed to do double duty, then the A/M and Ferrari do the job. By the time you get down the Roma, the back seat is more of a 'suggestion' more suitable for luggage and whatever the owner just bought at Gucci and Neiman-Marcus. The Portofino might have been a better choice for touring comparisons.

It looks low tech cause Ferrari doesn't throw much money into infortainment R&D (if any) and it most likely is not a proprietary unit. Cars are also subject to all sorts of shocks and temperature extremes so they probably needed a very durable unit.
