@@chrism5433The good times will come. Your brain needs to reset from years of abuse. Use any resources you can find but mostly, eat right, sleep right and stay active. As you grow and find greater energy you will find that life will take over. You'll suddenly look back on the progress you have made and with amazement say to yourself "S#it!! How did that happen." Your already doing it!! 😊

Also remember you are not an alcoholic with its negative implications. Those who stopped smoking are not nicoholics and those who stopped heroin are not heroholics they by society are sober. This falsehood of always an alcoholic was started by AA wrongly and makes you, I, others feel ashamed for life. So are you on day two of sober; then you are sober keep it up.

I have felt as you do in the past. Many of us have learned to identify as an alcoholic with no shame. It's not my fault that I have a lot of trouble stopping drinking once I start. It's not my fault that 34 years of using that addictive poison, that my mind and body are in need of recovery. It's not in my control that the terms Alcohol Use Disorder, Alcoholic, Drunk, Booze Hound, Lush and so many more each have their own connotations. AA is almost 90 years old. The language in the foundational writing can be difficult. The spiritual ideas can draw the ire of many. I found that I have been successful at everything in life except drinking. That maybe, just maybe I didn't have this covered. That possibly I was continually thinking myself out of my own recovery. No one HAS to be in AA, but possibly resenting their mere existence is faulty. Possibly if we give ourselves the chance, we see that AA can be ours. Not theirs.

Everyone can be on their own path to an alcohol-free life, there's no "right" or "wrong" way to get sober, there is only the way that works for you. AA has helped thousands of people get sober, but it definitely is NOT the ONLY way to go! Anyone who keeps trying to make a positive change will get there if they stick with it, these videos are a great place to learn all the great tools and tips there are to help us on this alcohol-free journey.

I would say, it's more so , I will always have the capacity for addiction that needs to be kept in check, hence 'maintaining sobriety'. You are right, I am not an alcoholic, I am a human being.

You have nothing to loose and everything to gain! Emancipate yourself!! At the age of 42, I had lost everything, and I mean everything!! I almost died. I had seizure induced cardiac arrest and was saved by Paramedics. I don't know how much i drank a day, days didn't exist. I bought three bottles of bargain basement scotch at a time and was either drinking or unconcious until it ran out, then I bought three more. I shook so hard that i was afraid that i would break my teeth if i put the bottle to my mouth. Ive been sober for 12 years and just bought a four bedroom house on its own plot. I have a 4x4 and go exploring every chance I get with my beautiful girlfriend of ten years. It can be done, sh*t, if I can, you can. ❤

I’ve appreciated my detours. They were constant reminders that I was on the right path when I wasn’t drinking. Every time I had a few drinks after being sober for a while, I felt physically and mentally ill and I did not enjoy the experience. I looked at the relapses as good reminders-that my days were much better without alcohol.

Your story sounds a lot like my own story, I started drinking as a teenager and now I am 57. I have been trying for over ten years to "control" my drinking, but now that I have decided to just STOP drinking it has made all the difference. I was so afraid to just leave alcohol behind, it had been part of my life for so long, it had been part of every single happy experience I had - since I drank just about every day. But I never realized it had been part of the worst days of my life too, and in fact it had been the main reason I had those terrible times, or it had at least made the bad times much much worse. Now that I have grown children who are going to be old enough to legally drink soon - I am terrifed that my years of setting a bad example are going to "come home to roost"! I am desperately hoping I can set some sort of better example. I have a lot of shame, guilt and anxiety about the way I would drink in front of my kids, it is so "cringe-worthy" to even think about some of the embarrassing stuff I did when I was drunk out of my mind in front of them... but I know all I can control is today and the choices I make. I am gettinbg sober for me, but I hope I can help my family and others around me too.

@jeffreyjohnmann Thank you so much. You literally just wrote the story of my life. I too started drinking early at like 14. Never a real problem, I was a high flying successful and well to do lawyer. About 12 years ago heavy social drinking morphed into daily drinking, then day drinking, then just always drinking. As I wrote this today I am praying for the power to just STOP. My son is away as a freshman in college and I loathe example I set for him. I can literally trace all thr problems in my life directly to alcohol use and abuse. Thank you very much for your response.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a few drinks from time to time. But people like us tend to not want just a few, which becomes a problem.
Self awareness is key to success! Keep working towards your other goals and pair them with your sobriety 😁

      @jpc443 Před měsícem +2

@GettingSoberAgain TBH, people in recovery tend to only hear what they want to hear, particularly when they are vulnerable to relapse. I don't think it's particularly helpful to voice an opinion that you personally feel its OK to have a drink from time to time, when it absolutely is not!!! This is your channel! People regard you as an authority!! There us a responsibility that comes with your position.

This was right on time....I've been really close to convincing myself that "just one" won't hurt. While, as you say, a drink is just a detour, I know me. I tend to do nothing in moderation, so for me, drinking "like a gentleman" is just not an option. One inevitably leads to way too many for me, and I really fear sliding back into old habits after 4 months of sobriety. Good news.....just got my new lab work back and my liver enzymes (ALT/AST) are back in normal range. That hasn't been the case in years, so I'm sober happy dancing now!!!!

Someone asked Thomas Edison "Did you get discouraged when it was so hard to find the best filament for the light bulb?"

I kept going until I found something that worked."

Did you know that once the lightbulb was invented, they worked so well that all the lightbulb manufacturers got together and decided to make them last less. There was even a oversight committee that would fine a company per lightbulb if it was found randomly that one of their light bulbs lasted past a certain length of time.

I find your content VERY consumable. Not long winded at all. You have a nice logical clear flow and top notch production quality. You have a charisma that definitely comes through.
I watch all the other popular sobriety influences as well. They all offer great insight and tips. But some of them can be a bit long-winded for sure, and repeat themselves a lot. I often find myself tapping the screen to advance 10 or 20 seconds. I'm like, "OK, you've made the point. Move on." Lol.

So, today, assuming I don't drink, will be day 1 dot dot dot again lol. I have a list of 10 reasons why I need to quit (Number 1 being acetaldehyde!).
But it dawned on me this morning I could add reason 11. Today is February 29. Interesting day to quit because I won't have the opportunity to quit again on February 29 for 4 years. Somewhat of a weak reason, but as I said, I already have 10. Adding to the list is always a good thing.

Haven't relapsed, but I'm struggling this week for the first time. 94 days sober, almost at the big 100! A few weeks ago I quit nicotine aswell, and this past week I've been craving a drink for the first time. It feels kinda wrong to be this "clean". No stimulant to comfort me. Started eating healthy and exerciseing, feel great, but Suddently got this intense urge to get shitfaced at a dirty underground rock concert, miss the last bus home, roam around all night with strangers and eat kebabs while waiting for the first bus home. Like the old days.
I've been to 2 parties, everyone is pregnant so no one is drinking, which is obviously good, but boring. Can't wait for summer so I can go out and find some new sober, crazy, fun hobbies!!
Sorry for the ramble, really struggling to find motivation right now...

It sounds like you are romanticizing your old "drinking life". I think a lot of us do that. I don't miss alcohol as much as I miss the feelings of being carefree and blissfully ignorant of the damage booze was doing to my body, my brain, my thinking, my relationships, my job... I certainly miss that more than hangovers, an empty bank account, and diarrhea. But now that I have seen what alcohol was really doing to my life I can't go back. I think that is the hardest part. We can never go back to "the old days" you mentioned - and that can be difficult to deal with. I don't want to live in the past, I don't want to be some pathetic drunk desperately trying to relive the so-called "glory days", Stumbling around wasted out of my mind wasn't all that glorious if I am honest with myself, it was pretty embarrassing and cringe-worthy. I want to move forward into a better future where I am becoming the person I was meant to be, where booze isn't ruining my opportunities and wasting my time, money, and health. The "good old days" weren't all that good and they are never coming back. I want something better.
