A guy that I used to play with was absolutely obsessed with him. They had very similar finger picking styles. He used to beg us to play this with him. We got to where we actually had a really tight cover of it. We used to play it for sound check. It was good because everyone has distinct parts. He had the solos down. Not me, I'm like "guitar George". I play chords with a pick ..... Boring I know. Usually though for soundcheck you play like 1 minute just to tweek the levels and everything. So we're in this bar one night doing soundcheck, and the soundguy never stopped us. He was amazed that we were a 4 piece and everyone was good enough to actually play that entire song. He was a fan after that.

Summer of '79, a three month hippy honeymoon across Europe. It's around midnight and we're running through the Munich train station trying to catch an overnight to Vienna. Sultans of Swing is playing through the station loud speakers at full volume. First time hearing it. The feeling of euphoria is still there...over 40 years later.

The whole album just came out of the blue, landing smack in the middle of dying 70's dinosaurs, snarling insipid talentless punks, and cookie cutter corporate rockers. Dire Straits might as well have come from another stsr system. Their music was so different and yet so timeless and familar. I love the feel of this album. It has a warmth, a whiteness, a kind of authentic purity. The only other record that matches it in terms of this feel is Television's eponymous third album--another classic for anyone who loves great guitar playing.

@@williamherd7251 I agree that Knopfler is one of the best, but you don't have to put down other genre of music to prop him up. "Shred sticks" are real guitars too and nothing wrong with active pickups either. BTW Mark Knopfler uses active pickups too, and so does David Gilmour so I guess they're not playing a real guitar. As for speed, I agree with Eqinor that this is not a fast song, even for a non metal song.

The first time I heard this song was the summer of 1978. I was in the backseat of my dad's 77 Chevrolet Caprice 4 door, while driving along the shore line of Grand Traverse Bay Michigan. It was late afternoon and we were on vacation going to our hotel on the bay. I told my dad to turn up the volume and he did and me, dad, mom and older sister rocked out to it. Well, at least me and my sister did, but our parent didn't seem to mind the song. To this day when I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment. Good times!

@@blairlohnes8103 Well, Chet Atkins noticed how good he is. Finger pickers are rare in the rock n roll world. Atkins said he was the best vibrato picker he ever heard, and made an album with him.

@@mikedegregorio9113 Still amazes me that he never used a pick to play this. In hindsight, I guess I can hear it after watching this. I guess I've only associated not using a pick with classical and Spanish flamenco guitar. After 20 years of learning music, I still have much to learn, and I hope I will after another 20. It's like a game you just get better at but never really win. Thanks for pointing that fact out, definitely adds some validity to his legacy in rock.

Today at age 70, Mark still plays well. Doesnt move much anymore, but age has only improved that great talent in Mark Knopler. Long live Mark Knopler and thanks Mark for all the lovely songs you have given us.
