    This is a hard surface modeling tool designed to help you slice/cut and add to different shapes in Blender.
    The way it works is pretty simple - to access it, you need to be in edit mode. Simply select a face, then right click and select the option for Grid Modeler.
    This grid is something that you can inference to in order to draw shapes along a face that can then cut or add to objects in your model.
    First things first - you can adjust the grid size by holding the control key and scrolling your mouse wheel. This is going to allow you to adjust the grid up or down. If you tap the “A” key, you can toggle between absolute and relative modes. Relative mode is going to size your grid based on the face size you have selected.
    If you want the grid to be bigger than your face, you can hold “alt” and roll your mouse wheel to adjust the overall size.
    If the grid isn’t fitting on the face properly, you can hold Ctrl and Left Click on an edge to align the grid to that edge
    Note that you can create grids that align with non-flat faces as well just by selecting them when you first enable the grid modeler tool.
    The way this tool works is that you can draw along the grid, then use the shapes you draw in order to conduct various operations. One thing to note about this is that as far as I know, this is a destructive modeling tool, meaning that you can’t go back and make changes later - once they’re applied, they’re applied.
    Once you’ve drawn a shape, you’ve got a few options - you can create a new face, use your shape as a Boolean cutting tool, create a Boolean slice, and create an edge pipe along your drawn face.
    One thing I find helpful is to extend your grid size beyond the face you’re editing if you’re going to cut along the edge of a shape.
    In addition, you can also edit your selection once you’ve drawn it, allowing access to tools like the array and rotation tools.

    I own all three: boxcutter, hardops and grid modeller. The latter is the one I use the most for prototyping. Simple commands, ease of use and quick results. My favourite addon!

    Thanks again Justin - this may be my new favorite add-on!
    2 minutes after buying it, I wondered if you REALLY needed to be in face mode, or if it worked in edge or vertex mode. It does, and the results are great! Here's a cool tip - start with a single vertex, edit, and hit Grid Modeler. Now you have a grid plane that is super easy to use, add faces, pipes, whatever, with precision. This one is cool and has potential!

    Whooowhats up Justin 😁
    although I already know and use BC, HO and Fluent, GM looks pretty interesting.
    So you can choose which workflow suits you best.
    At the moment I'm more at Fluent than BC because of the workflow, but both are very good tools.
    However, Fluent brings more tools with it than just boolean operations - (grids, pipes, wires, chains - with templates - just great).
    Let's see, maybe I'll take a closer look at GM.
    Thanks for the introduction, Justin!

    • @TheCGEssentials
      @TheCGEssentials  Před 3 lety +1

      I'd say the one thing to be aware of with Grid Modeler is that it's destructive - you can't make changes to the booleans like you can with Fluent - I do like how quick it is though

  • @scotthamilton7161

    Does this compliment something like Fluent? How do you think this compares with Fluent? Nice video, as usual.

    • @TheCGEssentials
      @TheCGEssentials  Před 3 lety

      Sort of - Fluent uses booleans for more of a non-destructive workflow. It feels to me like this is more designed for quick modeling based on what I'm reading on the developer website, and it does feel like you're going faster when you use it, but the fact that it's destructive does mean you can't go back and make changes later

    I don't quite understand the shortcuts because my English is a little weak. What is the shortcut to growing the grid and how the grid can expand to the outside of the object. What is the shortcut to extrude and what key do we press to confirm after we have drawn on the grid.

    • @sameeruddin
      @sameeruddin Před rokem +1

      use ALT+ Mousewheel to Expand the grid size and then can immdiately start drawing the shape , if you like to further expand the grid , you can while drawing you can use alt plus mousewheel combo to expand or shrink the grid , you can use space bar to break the shape and start drawing it from a new point
