I am very impressed by Simona these days. To be honest, I never thought she had enough game to really compete at the top even when she attained the #1 ranking. I also thought that her attitude was terrible... not that she was mean, but she was defeatist and curt. Over the past couple years though, she has really seemed to relax and become a much more well rounded and pleasant person. I think that has helped her a lot. Plus she's worked on different aspects of her game to up her level. Good for Simona.... she and all her fans should be proud.

Wimbledon has tradition, but it is played on a minority surface. Roland Garros is 2nd in tradition, but it is played on one of the two most used surfaces in the world. There are skills on clay that do not apply to play on grass, just as there are skills on grass that do not apply to play on clay.

I've watched Halep for a long time. She has finally come into her own. She always had the skills and the heart, but her mental game often led to nerves and tightness. She would tighten up, get mad at herself, then choke. But, now she has fought thru her most difficult opponent-herself. And, her serve has gone from just get it over to a real weapon. With it she doesn't have to get into so many extended rallies. Williams looked beaten and tired while Halep looked fresh as a daisy.

A lot of the gracious and humble personality of Simona comes from her Romanian culture and her Christian Orthodox faith. The same goes for other great Champions like Djokovic who comes from a similar culture and same faith. It is refreshing to see athletes like this. I was pulling for Halep all the way. Someone being able to beat Serena so convincingly is good for the game
serena hasn't pplayed a top 10 player all year, and was clearly out of condition for the level she was playing at.
The fact she hit 20 aces against Riske goes to show the gap in talent, it was not so much that she was too good, she just had the raw strength to sweep aside low ranked players with ease, but as soon as real competition comes along she is exposed.

This beautiful, angelic, graceful champion will have huge support from round 1 when Wimbledon eventually returns in 2021. She is loved around the world and the UK fell properly in love with Simona on this day.
Edit: What a damn travesty that Simona hasn't been able to defend her title due to injury and the pandemic last year. Writing this the evening before the ladies final 2021 and it's not been the same without her competing this year. Looking at the way it's panned out she would of had a great chance to retain.

As a true fan of tennis for decades, I am most pleased when a championship is decided by exceptional play rather than performance failures, injuries or excuses. In this case, Simona put on a clinic and played up to her potential. She has always had these abilities, but rarely married her skills with her mental game. What I saw today was a resolve that bodes well for the future. Tennis, both men's and women's has been plagued by an inability for any of the 2nd tier players to raise their skill and consistency enough to pose an actual challenge to the true champions. Serena has lived on top of women's tennis for decades with no real threat other than herself. Roger, Rafael and Novak have also dominated with no real threats other than those who were opportunistic enough to take advantage of their absence due to injury. They are all exceptionally talented individuals, but the field should be completely ashamed of themselves for not putting in the work it takes to take the reigns, as this generation did from Agassi, Becker and Sampras.
She was amazing.
