Also a reason why it supports Wi-Fi Direct (the controllers themselves actually use this too) is because it has been promised to be the answer to the Internet of Things (a term I think Cisco coined to describe a world where things, not even always electronics, have direct communication with eachother) Think traffic cones talking to Street lights and cars or your refrigerator talking to your oven. The transmission directly between the things without a router or anything. The semi popular tech Miracast uses this to create wireless displays. Xbox has a Miracast app in preview that should officially come out with Windows 10 for xbox I hope.

But every journalist who's actually used one says the image is confined to a very small area and disappears if you move your head wrong. So is it huge rock solid high def images bursting into your room like the demos? Or a small box with basic image quality that you have to hold still to look at?
someday people will play laser tag using hololens and they will see each other in full body armor... and running around in a wide room filled with cool hololens objects...

Kinect was not a failure. Tech from Kinect is being used and is evolving. Hololens itself uses a lot of tech from the Kinect. Windows hello as well. Bold and inventive.

Cool proof of concept, but seems kind of dishonest as to what the tech is currently capable of. FYI: last I heard the Field of View for this device is a measly 30 degrees. The image that is projected on the lens is super small, and very transparent. It can't project dark pixels, only lights. They just announced the developer's edition for the Hololens, and it's a cool $3,000. So until they get a workable FOV, a more opaque image, and a higher refresh rate, the unit itself is fairly useless. I wonder what the latency is like.
+David Pifko Small FOV is not bad for this breakthrough technology. It will be 3 to 4 years for the CPUs and the sensors to advance in performance. U can miss the fun for the next 4 years before it satisfies your requirement or APPLE innovates this in another 4 years. @2019, u can stand in line at the Apple store.

+CanadaRulez4Ever it not useless. This hologram glasses can do much more stuff then this has shown. It can do Skype, designing bikes, designing tools, Facebook, t.v, mine craft games. I;ve watch video but Im not an expert on it. It definitely useful for designing stuff on your windows.
