OK .. you wanted suggestions. 1. I just heard you talking about downed timber, tough going and it might take you 2 days to get one out. Well .. that's the line between harvest & no harvest. Many times that's the ONLY way you're going to get one. That's where they live. 2. I like your enthusiasm and it sounds like your E-scouting worked out for the first episode. I think your mistake on the first day encounter was calling when you got in close. That gives your location up. When going in solo calling is ok to locate but then get your wind right and sneak in. When he bugles you move 10-15 yds, no more calling from you except when you cow call to stop him for the shot. One thing I did a long time ago which has helped was I read Cameron Hanes book DIY Bow-hunting elk solo. I put some of his methods to the test and it really works. Those bulls will stay in cover and usually 75+yrds from where they hear you calling, and they can pin-point the location of your call within inches. You are doing a great job. I'm only watching ep. 2 now. Mental game is tough. You might avoid the shitty down timber stuff until you find the elk. You might be putting yourself through anguish for nothing.
I finally had success this last season. Took me seven years to seal the deal though I was close and usually had 3 to 4 good opportunities a year (mis judging yardage, shooting trees and things like that.) I was solo when I got my first elk and once I knew I had his attention and he was coming, I went silent and closed our distance as fast and silent as I could. I figured when he sounded off he was 200 yards out, I closed in about 80yards to a good spot and just waited quietly. He remembered my last cow call and slowly kept making his way to that. I was able to close the deal and am so grateful to get that opportunity. Many times I stayed in one spot and called thinking he would come in right to me and they always stayed about 80 yards away. Nonetheless you did great and I’m sure you will get one (if you haven’t already, I’m still watching.)
Did several solo archery mule deer hunts years ago on Barrillas Mountain in New Mexico. I preferred solo as I didn’t have to interact with anyone. Killed a couple bucks. Back when there were no rangefinders cell phones or decent quality arrows. Used old Fred Bear broadheads then. Had MRE food from the civil war I think lol. Nasty stuff. Enjoyed watching
I can only imagine what that MRE did to your insides
Very good hunt. Your analysis of their route looks to be right on.
Great feeling a bro! I too Solo archery hunt.
You were at the right altitude however... I seen a bunch of elk where the snow fell this year in CO... I spent the entire month doing 2 figure 8's around the entire state of CO just checking out my usual spots and enjoying the mountains this year...
20:26 I’m shooting whatever that elk is walking across 😂 Awesome video man! Love the content!
I should have. I do regret not trying to take that shot.
@@jeffcordero_ Hindsight is 20/20 innit? Still, freaking awesome video! Let’s get you out here to AZ for OTC archery deer 🏹🦌
Nice job man. It’s tough that is for sure, and even tougher trying to film iy
great video wish I was there to ty
In bear country you might pack a portable electric bear fence. A compact 2.4 lbs for huge peace of mind.
Cool video
Thank you!
Dude, I was out there the same time this year and got slammed with that snow
At least for me it was not on the weather report. Just goes to show how fast the weather can change and that you have to be prepared for it.
Wow fancy channel well done great video
Thank you SheerWill. I’m doing the best I can with the limited experience and knowledge I have
@@jeffcordero_ very good nice keep at it
And .. I think you know this .. but persistency always pays off. Don't give up!!
Thank you. I appreciate the criticism. I'm going to take it and move forward and use it to help leverage future hunts. I am also far from giving up, times can be tough and success can feel like an insurmountable task, but I'm not giving up!
@@jeffcordero_ I'd actually say you had a pretty darn successful first go at it. Your intelligence and pre-planning was a big part of that. I think that more you realize that there's gonna be the highest of highs & lowest of lows, it won't be a surprise & weigh on your mental game next time. I don't know if you watch any of Corey Jacobson's content (Elk 101), but if not, you should. PS .. you have a pretty cool job.
@@slinger3350 Thanks again. obviously we all want to punch the tag, but I did take a lot of moments and situations during this trip that I consider wins. I also can't lie, I also love my job, it is what I always wanted to do. Put a lot of time, effort, made sacrifices to get to were I am. Im applying that same mindset and attitude to hunting.
@@jeffcordero_ Yah I could kind of tell that your work ethics were showing in your hunting ethics. Keep the good content coming.
What is your tripod? (monopod with tripod legs?). How did it work for you. It seemed to set up and level out pretty well in this video. Thanks for sharing!
It works ok. You have to find a flatter spot to be able to set it and leave it. It is a Sirui 204, with the va-5 head
Awesome hunt! Can I ask what tripod you were packing around with your camera on it? Looked like a sweet set up!
I used a Sirui monopod with a va-5 head on it. Thank you!
@@jeffcordero_ I just asked this same question. Did you like the way it worked for you? It seemed to set up quickly and didn't seem to be distracting you by tipping over.
IMO - Drop the aggressive bugling and resort to more calf calls & small sounding/lame/short bugles..... Calf's are the young hotties to young satellite bulls.... A bull with cows typically won't want to challenge anything.... Practice calf calls so quiet that you don't even need to open your mouth.
I for sure will. It’s just so damn hard not to try and bugle when they are responding. But I defiantly learned that just because they are bugling doesn’t mean they are coming.
If they answer move! You are not bringing them in, especially if the get to the hang up spot before you can get passed it. They are simply too smart! Play the wind, if that bull has cows and you keep cow calling those cows will move the bull away.
If you are within a 100 yards do a challenge call , that’s it, no cow calls.
Good advice. Thank you!
What tripod are u using for ur camera
I use a Sirui Monopod with the va5 fluid head
What brand camo are you wearing in beginning near jeep?
All the cam I wore was Sitka Optifade Subalpine. Except for the puffy jacket, that has come generic green camo
@@jeffcordero_ I just watched your pack dump video. I guess you had already provided that info if I’d been more patient.
@@opigonbad1 it’s all good! Thank you for the continued support!
How did it end?
No elk was harmed or killed in the making of this Colorado film…
Is that a GoPro mount for a hat?
Yea it’s called the sidekick. Made for the GoPro 4 session
@@jeffcordero_ interesting nev er saw that before i was looking at the stuntman mountthat straps to back pack strap to mount the camera to for hiking/archery, butt his might be the solution
Where in colorado were you hunting?
OTC unit on Public Land. Im not going to disclose the unit or region 🙃
@@jeffcordero_ What about GPS coordinates? 🤣
Too much music 🤪😳
