  • When Russia’s military deployed its TOS-1A ‘vacuum bomb’ that sucks the oxygen out of the air, analysts said Ukraine’s best defense was to destroy the weapons before Russian troops could use them. Human rights advocates are pushing to restrict the TOS-1A, as some experts are arguing it could harm civilians in urban areas. So what makes the TOS-1A so deadly and controversial?
WSJ explains why this thermobaric weapon is so feared and how Kyiv has dealt with them.
    Chapters:

    2:55 Ukraine’s defense against TOS-1A’s
4:29 Why the TOS-1A is not banned
5:45 What it would take to ban

Thermobaric munitions go all the way back to WW2 where the German Army used a six-barrelled 15cm Nebelwerfer rocket launcher (15 cm NbW 41). The weapon looks more like a large 6-barrel gun. It looks like 6 mortar tubes attached to a tow-behind and is very simple in design.

They would shoot the first 5 rounds that contained propane gas to saturate the area in gas and then the 6th round shot would set off the explosion as it ignited the gas from the first 5 rounds. They were used on the Eastern Front.

@@florin-titusniculescu5871 There's no competition over whose bomb is the most moral, what an utterly absurd thing to say.
Everybody knows that the most moral bombs are whatever bombs the Israeli military deploys, because they are the _most moral army in the world._
That's why Israel is able to methodically bomb all infrastructure that makes human life possible, obliterating the foundations of civil society while enforcing military blockade to prevent food & drinkable water from entering the Gaza -ghetto- *strip* - not to mention fuel/energy & basic medical supplies - and none of it can possibly be tantamount to genocide.
If Israel has the world's most moral army, then anything they do is inherently more moral than anything other countries' armies do, which means they're definitionally incapable of committing a crime like genocide - if you doubt this, or question anything, you're a raging antisemite. It's indisputable.
How do we know that Israel's army is the most moral army in the world, you ask? Well now, that one's easy. *Israel said so.* That makes it true, automatically.

The US has been using thermobaric weapons since the Vietnam War.
In recent years they have conveniently renamed them as "novel explosive" to avoid bad PR.
Hundreds of thermobaric Hellfire missiles have been used in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria - often in urban areas with little regard for civilian casualties.

Thermobaric bombs or "vacuum bombs" are also used by US, UK, Israel, Syria and Ukraine.
Thermobaric bombs gets the misnomer "vacuum bomb", because of a partial vacuum it creates AFTER the initial explosion has already occurred. One of the effects is rupture of lungs after the shockwave but this happens from other explosions as well, be it from a nearby bomb like C4 going off or from an artillery strike. Shockwave happens during every explosion and is not exclusive to thermobaric or "vacuum" bombs/missiles.

Yes they can be morally questionable indeed, but in comparison to the TOS-1 they don’t pack as a serious punch, whereas that thing is basically a rolling war crime most infamous for demolishing big cities like Mariupol. Also it’s important to note that Ukraine doesn’t use any RPO-A Shmel launchers, since the soviet stockpiles were mostly reserved for the RSFSR and the arms trade between Ukraine and Russia has been suspended since 2014, instead they use a domestically produced, improved modification called the RPV-16.

BLU-82 produces an overpressure of 1,000 pounds per square inch (6,900 kPa) near ground zero, tapering off as distance increases. TOS is very short range thus is only used very close to the front line where there is very few remaining civilians even in urban areas. Thus any debate about thermobaric weapons would be more pertinent with other weapons.
In fact, the main defense against such weapons by the Ukrainian is not destroying them but dispersing their troups at the front line just as against others artillery weapons that have a zone of effect. This is why there is no continuous heavily manned trenches in this war. Any concentration of force would be very quickly destroyed by indirect fire.

I really don't understand why people insist on using the word "vacuum" with these devices. They don't "suck" oxygen from anywhere. There's a charge that distributes the fuel in the air, where the oxygen is, and a second that detonates the hopefully-by-then stochiometrically (is that a word? should be) ideal fuel/air mixture. Oxygen molecules surrounding but outside that cloud of fuel don't suddenly get somehow sucked up by the detonating compounds (aside from the inrush of air you'll often see after any large explosion, after the initial outgoing pressure wave, when the hot gasses loft). And I'm not arguing pro or con - I'm just saying, they're already harsh weapons, no need to make them sound scarier than they already are.
