People in this day and age (2018) don't realize how groundbreaking this was. At the time, people with AIDS were considered outcasts. For the Princess to humanize them was a huge thing
The fear and cruelty against the sufferers of this disease is a great shame. In fighting against it with great courage, using her platform, Diana was a saint.
As someone who lost a very dear family member to AIDS, people forget how huge this was. We know in 2021 that AIDS cannot be passed to others unless through sexual contact or specific body fluids (for example, blood and feces). But in the 1980's, AIDS was a medical death sentence and kept people terrified from even touching an AIDS patient. People were left to die alone in hospitals as their families turned their backs on them and even nurses feared their touch. The fact that she would hug and sit close to them still touches me.
Not so much. Elizabeth Glaser had a conversation with Barbara Bush about HIV/AIDS and then the administration still didn't commit to doing more to help those with HIV/AIDS.
Addis Ababa Well this was at the height of the AIDS crisis when people who had HIV were seen as lesser people, but in the 2000s it had became less of a taboo subject so people didn’t worry about it, so the Clintons and Obama’s don’t need to do stuff like this
@@jamesheaney3202 The Clintons and Obama's did way better than Bushes. Barbara only cared when Diana was planning to visit Aids patients and show the world they're not contagious by touch.
I think as history as uncovered that fact that Princess Diana was not (shockingly!) perfect, and that she, like all human beings, had her flaws and foibles, that we sometimes forget what an extraordinary woman she was, to use her platform in such impactful ways, and how she did it with such warmth and a natural care for human beings. She set such a brilliant example for her sons and the women they have chosen to marry.
Honestly, she radiates such a unique and warm energy. Something about her just makes people feel close to her. None of us really knew her but we still felt so connected to her. She’s was truly a kind hearted person. I really wish she was still with us
Diana is lovely inside and out. She reached out and touch people with AIDS and wasn’t afraid. She dispelled the stigma associated with the disease. What a lovely human being she really was.
She should gotten a Nobel Price for this. Because AIDS was unknown diseases back then, and she did this when it was Height of the AIDS. She "CHANGE" the belief and perception of people about this disease. That's the hardest thing to do she CHANGE OUR PERCEPTION AND BELIEF. What great human being.
I got to know about princess Diana from my English teacher. Ever since I've gotten to know more and more about her it aches me to think that I never existed when she did. She died before I was even born. How amazing it would have been to just live at the same time as such a beautiful soul on this earth
You can tell she never wanted to be on camera just wanted to be genuine and show her love to people one on one and have children experience it. She was sadly taken away way too soon but god had better plans for her
This was very, very important. She shook hands with aids patients without gloves (.......). She made a statement here. You can touch Aids patients are not people you should be scared about. She treated them lovingly. And she said to this guy: apparently the party up there is even better then the one down here. Bless her.
Wow, just wow. This woman is a real Princess. Her heart is what humanity needed but unfortunately they were too scared of the shift of power. I hope one day, we can all strive to be like her.
When seeing this, stil get emotional. She did real good for others. Never forget, Princess Diana took of the stigma from AIDS. She was the first huge step. So missed. Don't you just love her natural beauty and pureness.
Never ever heard any Kind princess like Diana visit badly sick one...She its the only only one..we love you Daina..She was in heaven with Jesus now...Rest in peace Diana..
Huge credit as well to Barbara Bush. There's something especially profound about this knowing that she succeeded Nancy "Never Say AIDS" Reagan as First Lady...
I find it hard to believe that this was anything other than a phote opp for Barbara Bush. We all know how much Princess Diana advocated for those suffering with HIV/AIDS (at the time of this footage, if you were diagnosed with AIDS, on average you were given about 2 years left to live. 3 if you were lucky). She showed compassion and sympathy for both children and adults with AIDS and by adults I mean gay men. AIDS took an entire generation of gay men away from us before they were even able to reach 35 years old. And it went largely ignored by both the Reagan and Bush administration.
And even if she's not a saint she still is a great woman. She loved her job (charity work)and they killed her because she was more popular and different than the rotten british royal family. She was the only normal person in that family.
Imagine 2 men dressed as women enter your house. You notice something weird but can't tell what it is, much less can you say it, but it's subconsciously obvious.
Well if she was the most famous and most photographed woman at 20 I think she realized she was being followed so decided okay let them follow me to the hospital then they would have preferred to just portray her as some privileged snob I suppose though that just was not her true character at all. They do the same with Harry now too spends 8 years in the military they call him a woke brat.

I am a die hard Democrat but goddammit...I am going to give HUGE HUGE props to First Lady Barbara Bush for shaking hands and meeting with HIV and AIDS patients in such a close-quartered session. I am shocked that all these years I never knew First Lady Barbara Bush was in this meeting, as well. Thank you, Princess Diana for leading the charge in changing hearts and minds.
I'm not overreacting, I think she was actually the only princess in the history of mankind who earned the title "Princess"..
DorianCroatia20 not in history but yeah she did
Correction, I meant in modern history :)
I believe the same!
correction: not in the history , everytime

No offense, but the impact back then was probably similar to a nuclear bomb (and that might not even be an exageration).
That has been true of every epidemic of infectious disease.
The fear and cruelty against the sufferers of this disease is a great shame. In fighting against it with great courage, using her platform, Diana was a saint.
True
And we know that Trump would never have done this. People have forgotten what a leader should be.
Princess Diana was one of the first public figures to visit AIDS hospices. RIP Diana.

I was only 11 when she passed away but yet i still remember my parents talking about her back then, such a loving soul 😘
I was 8 inches. You got me beat.

I’m British and I’m no royalist, but she’s a beautiful soul, and a remarkable woman. She’s the only Queen I would want. R.I.P
Sou brasileiro e daria tudo para sermos uma monarquia parlamentarista. A República é uma desgraça maldita.
Me too. What a beautiful soul.
Barbara Bush has gone up in my estimation. What a kind gesture by her too.

@Addis Ababa cause we do not hospitalize people with HIV anymore dumb fuck, we have amazing treatments.

Agree! For some reason I find myself watching her interviews randomly over the past 6 months or so.
Such a beautiful and caring woman.I wish She was still here...
Can you even imagine what this did to break down public perception of HIV/AIDS at the time? It was ground breaking. Amazing women.

Could we stop repeating the same falsehoods and clichés?
I admire them both for this.
dont worry, she was immune to all disease in this world. she's not human. she's an angel.
She WAS a human and she touched the AIDS patients to show to the world that we can't contact this disease with just a simple touch or a handshake.
she was a human, and she touched them because they are human too and she wanted to show people that

This moment right here, was the moment she surpassed her popularity over the entire royal family members, and still counting!
You can tell she never wanted to be on camera just wanted to be genuine and show her love to people one on one and have children experience it. She was sadly taken away way too soon but god had better plans for her
Imagine how obnoxious it'd be having to pass as the opposite sex all along.
