Service Dog Training GAME - COUNTERS!

  • This training game teaches your dog to do a default leave it, which basically means ignore food and other distractions that are tempting your dog that are out in public, such on counters shelves or in peoples hands. This game is great for service dog teams for public access training. It is also a great game for pet dogs because you can use it when going to pet dog friendly places as well as its a great impulse control exercise for proofing counter surfing, leave it and loose leash walking.
    This video is for service dog teams working on teaching their dog to be calm, confident, reliable and safe in public spaces where dogs are allowed as well as where only service dogs are allowed. However, these tutorials and tips are great for everyone who wants a confident, well-behaved dog to bring places that pet dogs are allowed to go in public. In no way does this video condone training a fake service dog to bring places pet dogs are not allowed. Instead, if you have a pet dog, the goal of this training is to be able to go places like parks, boardwalks, city streets, outdoor dog friendly cafes and restaurants and stores that do not sell food and have a policy where pet dogs are allowed to enter.

    I taught sit and down and proofed it over and over ( I made a real campaign out of it) in MANY types of environments. When the environment turned out to be too much to get a reliable response, we would go there when there were hardly any people around and start from the beginning. I always start behaviors at home, inside......then outside in the back yard, then in the front yard, then on a walk around the block.....then we take it on the road. I consider retail environments a HUGE distraction load. So I would go to those places when there were hardly any people there. I think the stone wall you used as a makeshift counter is a brilliant idea. I am a few years out from retirement and would like to train service dogs for something to do when I leave the workforce. So these videos are of great interest to me.

    Even though I have no plans to train any of my dogs to be a service dog, this is very helpful anyone who takes their dog to pet-friendly stores (like we do). Thanks for the tips that anyone can use--service dog or simply pet dog.

    Thanks, Emily! This is very helpful. I would love to see you add noisy bags! Paper and plastic and those we bring from home! That noise added to the movement distraction is another challenge! And those bags on rotating carousels! Bags, and movement, and people - oh my!😄 God's best blessing - hugs, too! JJ and Ruthie-pup🙂🐕‍🦺💕🙏

    Hi Emily,
    Thanks for the lesson. I used to train dogs quite a while ago. And now I am training my second service dog as my first one died last year. The problem is I'm getting so disabled I can't do the training it's too difficult. By any chance do you know of any service dog trainers in the Los Angeles area? you recommended something to me once but I don't remember what it was. Sorry about that. There's so much more I wish I could do with my dog but being as chronically ill as I am I just am unable. Can you tell me Emily where did you get the harness or vest that Halo is wearing in this video I like it very much and would like to get one. Thank you so much and thank you as always for your tips. Your dogs are always so well behaved and are so calm and confident. Take good care and thanks again.

    Could you please make some videos on how to train service dogs for hearing impairments? For example, the dogs come to alert people when they hear there is a phone ring…There are videos on CZcams show the results but not how they were trained. Thanks!

      Awe that’s a good topic perhaps I can have a guest speaker on it as I’ve not trained dogs to do this however it would be a simple process of teaching the dog the noise whatever it is, is the cue to do the behavior of find the person to let them know.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  Před rokem +2

      Because I was practicing for my dog to see them when in the store. Also just so you know, some people wear masks because they themselves have a medical issue that requires them, like cancer treatment so I hope you don't glare at some person wearing a mask, some people have to wear them. But in this footage it was just as the masks started coming out and my dog was weirded out. So we were practicing. i honestly didnt even see the mask in the footage, because I have a lot of old footage where I am wearing a mask to prepare my dogs. I also wear a vet tech outfit around the house to train my dogs too and they love the vets now.

    please don't attempt to train your own service dogs, people with mental illnesses are uncapable of training dogs, and it creates the most nightmarish, embarassing situations in public.

      @leejennifercorlewayres9193 Před rokem +3

      That's not true. It only takes a tiny amount of training each day. Almost any dedicated person can do this disabled or not.

      @@PokeComm The reason many real service dogs are having reactiveness is because of people not controlling their pets. A well trained service dog is still not a robot and can't just take attack after attack and not react. If you want to be angry, then be angry at that. I won't let a dog attack mine. I'd rather take the bites and just sue the owners. There are leash laws.
