  • Teaching our service dogs to ignore distractions and focus around them is one of the most important things we'll do, and for many handlers, it's also one of the most challenging. That's where the engage disengage comes in.
Here is my favorite focus-building exercise to teach your service dog to focus and ignore distractions.

This is so helpful for us trying to reintroduce our dogs back into PA work from the long quarantine. Mine was great at focus before the pandemic, but now is overly interested in everything around her. This is a great exercise to regain the old focus pattern back.

I saw this method in a book written by a Norweigan trainer back in the early 90ths.. Here it is called the Kinder egg methode. I actualy think several trainers has come up with their own variation of this.. But i LOVE how you want to honor the right source to the protocol . You just earned a new sub. GREAT channel :)

I have heard of this exercise before, and tried to utilise it, but your way of explaining it really clicked and made it more understandable in my muddled little brain. Thank you!

@kavita deva It is a game called "Look at that" by Leslie McDevitt. I know it sounds odd at first, but it is counter-conditioning the dog to have a positive feeling when he sees the trigger. Google Look at That. And, oh my gosh, these people using old school methods of newspaper on the nose... ridiculous!

how to keep attention when a stranger is the distraction. My goldendoodle will see a stranger from far away. He wants to know who they are, are they friendly, will they play or communicate with him, do they have another dog even though he doesn't see one. It's hard to step away if the person is walking towards me. That person might be 12 houses away. My dog is a service dog, I don't know why this has started. Any tips?

What if dogs in area where I live are running straight to close to service dog? My friend have service dog and people here are letting their untrained dogs constantly reach her working dog.🤔 And her dog is failing then because It's happening often and people don't care.

Michael Shikashio has an awesome video on effective leash handling skills specifically for when loose dogs come around. I can't think of the name but there's a great video of being an advocate for your dog too, basically getting in front of your dog as if to say I got this so they don't feel like they have to react. Hope that helps.
