The Reality of Rescue | Sindisa's Story

  • Sindisa was a mare we intercepted from auction through our Buy Out program at the end of April. She came in the first trailer and was lying down when the doors were opened. We immediately noticed her poor body condition. After running a complete blood count, our veterinarians discovered she was in both liver and kidney failure. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do to reverse the damage inside Sindisa's body. She was given a compassionate end through the Last Act of Kindness and will never travel down the slaughter pipeline again. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.
We rescue horses of all species, ages, training levels and colors. No animal is ever turned away at our Open Admission Shelter!

I volunteer for Donkey and Equine Haven in Celina, Texas. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome donkeys and horses from kill pens regardless of age or condition. It is horrifying what is done to these animals from severe neglect to taking chain saws to their hooves. We just took in 15 BLM donkeys that were rounded up from the wild, “adopted” and then dumped after 60 days. We have been told that BLM pays “adopters” $1,000 after 60 days of taking an animal. Once money was received, they ended up in a kill pen. They are all healthy, beautiful and kind. It is important that the public understand what can happen to donkeys and horses when they are no longer of use to their owners. While slaughter no longer occurs in the U.S., these animals are loaded on trailers and driven to Mexico or Canada and slaughtered. I have an ex-racehorse right now who, at one point, won someone a lot of money, but when she came up lame with a bad knee, she was sent to the kill pen. Please be aware, advocate for animals where you can and support organizations like this one so we can end this terrible fate for equines and all animals. Even if you cannot donate, Like and Share videos like these to generate awareness. Thank you for all you do. It matters.

What a pretty mare, a shame that her previous owners hurt her so much when she should have been running free. Disappointing, that some crooks and heartless assholes get to just abuse these horses. Why? Whats even the point of getting meat from slaughter in animals that are falling apart like this? To bounce em around and make some money off their suffering, then ship off the bones and bits of rotting flesh to be consumed? It wont even taste good, why not treat these animals with dignity and kindness, even if they are bound to become food? Theres no added value to months and years of prolonged suffering.

I rescue dogs and cats for over 30 years and horses and donkeys for over 10 years now. I am a vet tech. I my country, Romania, a very small country, we will never put down a horse with the blood tests results of Sindisa. We will treat and do our best to cure. I discovered your channel about a month ago. First I thought you are great, but then, after watching most of your series, I concluded why you call yourself "the biggest horse rescue in the world". Because you, indeed, gather an enormous number of horses every single month. Half of them just to put them down by "the last act of.." on the arrival day, and another quarter later on, maybe one week later, off the camera. Less than 10 horses get out of the quarantine each month. The huge number of horses killed because of "untreatable" laminitis were, 90% of the cases I saw on your channel, treatable. Only 2 or 3 horses had extremely severe laminitis and actually destroyed bones, all the others presented as the happy receiver of the "last act of.." because of "fatal laminitis" were treatable, at least in Romania. And we are not high tech in medical devices nor reach, but what makes the difference is that we care. Those horses you put down needed just good trims, special horse shoes and TIME to heal. Some of them one year, others 2 years. But you put them down. Because it's not worthing your money, nor your time. You put down all horses that are not at least 95% healthy because they have to suit for adoption in 1-3 months. You ask for and get donations to heal the horses. "Last act' should be an act of real kindeness only on very special and specific cases, to actually release an animal from suffering. Not because he's body score is 1 and the blood tests are not perfect, or he has a minor infection or a moderate laminitis. No wonder you change the vets as socks. They finally crack, I'm sure they get to have nightmares every night after killing hundred of horses month after month. But you can do it without vets, right, cause the Big Lady Boss is a licensed vet tech. So she can kill the horses herself, she said it with her own mouth. No wonder why you decided to go "rescue" to Tennessee. The Big Lady Boss said it with her own words, too: "there is not other rescue, nor veterian administration" or how you call it in US. And plenty of horses to "rescue". Meaning nobody there to interfere with the diabolic plan and the perfect playground to satisfy a morbid need to kill the horses with your own hands. That's pathological. This is not rescue. This is slaughter house disguised on the 'biggest horse rescue mission in the world", while getting tones of tears, likes and money from the stupid (animal lovers) that really think you are "angels" for those poor beeings. I was devasted to see how you killed a beautiful 3-4 yrs young gelding with a foot infection because "he was difficult to handle". Really? That's atrocious. I saw yesterday Korry's story, your trainer, on a short. "What I like most of Horse Shelter Heroes is when the horses get out of the quaratine", he said. And anyone not blinded by your "rescue marathons" will read behind Korry's story: Everything else is diabolic. Hundreds of horses killed just because they are not worthing your time and money to heal them. And you need to make room every single month for "the next" 2-4 trailers of horses to star in your next "episode". Every single soul matters, people. We rescue no more than we afford to do it, and we put our money into it. We don't ask for donations. But we count every single horse, dog and cat as a candidate for LIFE, not for KILL. I am angry but no hate here. Just the sad truth. RIP innocent souls.

Wow, you must be superhuman with your fantastic ability to second guess experienced DMV's and test results all while not being there in person. Not every little piece of information regarding the animal's triage, diagnostic tests, or its initial treatment is shown or discussed in detail in these videos, therefore you're basing your diagnoses on incomplete evidence and personal emotions, the latter is not factual.
Your statement is one huge fallacy in logic starting with the Straw Man, appeal to emotion, reification and other arguments not based in fact. Bottom line is unless you are actually there at the facility and have put the work in, your surmise is highly inaccurate, as well as harmful.

    • @keojiabrown6807

I feel like alot of this is the outside looking in. Since we arent there in person treating these horses is easy to say they were saveable when in reality its probably a lot worse. I mean look at the type of horses they get in. Im not surprised that a lot of them may be put down. I trust the medical professionals in these videos 🤷🏾‍♀️.
And im not a charity/ rescue owner but i feel like a lot of the executive descions is do we spend $10,000 on a surgery for a horse that may or may not make it or do we spend that $10,000 and rescue 10 horses were in 7 or so make it in the end. "Well then they should've just left the horse alone" yeah they couldve but at the end of the day the root of the issue is the owners. They wouldnt have horses to put down if the previous owners didnt treat them like dirt. So yeah its about money nobody is denying it.
Edit: And just me putting two and two together the fact that another shelter called them to take in the foal they just had also the video where they did a swap of donkeys with another shelter its plausible to think that some of these animals could be going to other shelters behind the scenes. Just a thought.

I was under the impression that Romania was a very poor country with terrible issues with mistreated and abused animals.
Based on the years you claim to have done rescue work I am surprised that you would have ready access to the medical testing, like onsite bloodwork, portable X-rays, and ultrasound, that Horse Plus uses to make their decisions.
From what I can tell animal medicine in Romania improved most recently because they were trying to meet EU stands. While I’m not saying that advanced diagnostic techniques are not available there , most rescues must always balance successful outcomes for one animal vs the health of many.
But you know best it seems.
So I propose that instead of bashing HPHS, you reach out to them and see if you can impart your great wisdom on how to save more animals the “right way”.
Tawny is always open to learning new ways and considering new ideas; that’s how HP has been able to grow .
I really think you mentoring them would be the best way to help them become was as successful and knowledgeable as Romania and you.
I’m looking forward to the video of your visit and training sessions.
      I’d LOVE to see it.

Problem is… where and how would you maintain the horses over long periods of years?
How many would adopt a horse with such problems?
I’m from italy, our shelters are alla full with animals they did save with a lot of effort…
But in the end, very few get adopted out…they are so full that they cannot take more, so lots of animals don’t get any help in the end!
      That, is the problem!
You can’t save them all… you have to think about what will happen long term with them!

Why did you show that horse dying, I don't think that's one bit funny. You should show horses that have a good out come only. I don't like being upset. What kind of person thinks it's , funny to upset other people

It wasn't meant to be funny. It was meant to educate. Namely that rescue isn't all green pastures and bunnies.

You could have tried hydrating her to see if her values changed any

She had many internal problems hydration wouldn’t have fixed, it might have slightly regulated a few things but she was far too gone to be fixed momentarily or long term

Yeah you can't fix liver and kidney failure with fluids.

I know from personal experience that severe dehydration can cause values to be off so I don't buy it until she was fully hydrated. Then take the values to see if the kidneys and the liver really were bad. My dog died of kidney failure so I know what I'm talking about. The blood is thick and the urine will be dense. It was a monetary decision.

@@tiasims7737 Yes, dehydration will cause small spikes in certain stats, but all of the ones that were spiked/lowered SO heavily were simply signs of liver/kidney failure. You having an incident with a dog does not make you qualified to dispute trained professionals who not only deal with completely different animals, but have also seen this 50x a year for tens of years or more, and have done years and years of training and school

Please remember these are extremely skilled horse loving people, and attempt to remember they may actually have a lot of experience and veterinary experience.

Horse was dehydrated but I didn’t see her being given any water.

Maybe she was given, but they did not film it. The main issue is that the blood work were far from being catastrophic to require euthanasia. It was a monetary decision to put her to sleep, as her recovery would have taken many months, if not one year before she could have beed declared ready for adoption. And these people are fast, they declare themselves "the biggest horse rescue in the world", so their goal is to impress the audience with a bigger and bigger number of "rescued" horses rather than actually giving a real chance to life to these innocent souls. Any charity is, by the end, a business.
