The matter is indeed complex. It's been a 2-stage war. First came the annexation then the failed full invasion. After the annexation phase a deal was made but the terms were not respected by Ukraine. This ultimately triggered an invasion and the war we see raging to this day. NATO has also been accused by RU of breaking a promise to not expand eastward. This in turn gave an excuse to Russia to break their promise to not invade Ukraine after giving up their nukes.
The narrative of Russia as an enemy has prevailed while we could have been more understanding of their security concerns. Being surrounded by flatland while NATO forces are approaching is scary.
Just imagine the new island Ukraine could have made with the billions that now have gone up in smoke. Sure Crimea is nice but this could have been better still.
Now there are not two lovely islands but one and it's under attack while a million people are already dead and the world had to suffer from high energy and food prices.
All of this could have been avoided with a proper chat
