Crazy to think that Priest had already been a band for over 20 years by this album. They could've been typecast as a 70s band but got "grandfathered into" the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" in the late 70s (with newer bands like Iron Maiden). They were one of the first bands I'm aware of to call themselves a "heavy metal band" and take pride in it. Before them it was usually called "acid rock" or just "hard rock". I've heard it said that "Black Sabbath invented heavy metal.. Judas Priest perfected it."
I'm so glad this album finally is starting to get the audience it deserves. It's was overlooked at the time of it's release largely. I'm pretty sure Pantera opened for Priest when they were touring for this album. Imagine that show
@ By "overlooked" he means that bands like Metallica who sold out got a lot more commercial recognition. This record was certainly NOT overlooked by metal fans at the time, but it was by the masses.
I was front row center for the Painkiller show at the Arena in NJ. Rob pointed at me during Touch of Evil while screaming "you're possessing me". I don't remember the opening band.
"Hell Patrol" is my favourite song from the Painkiller album. Whereas Iron Maiden is defined by their galloping rhythms, Judas Priest is defined by their mid-tempo grooves. Another great example is "Revelations" from the album Nostradamus. It's a great album, but because they use synth guitars on some tracks the songs don't have the same bite or crunch as their heavier material.
I saw Priest live when this album first came out. I was in the front row with a crushing mass of metalheads behind me. As a black man, I stood out. It was my best concert ever!
This is 90's Priest. Just remember, Judas Priest have been around for 40+ years, so they have a huge set list of music that covers every style of rock music you can think of, and his voice was one of the best. In the early 80's Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were at the top of their game and were considered pretty heavy for their time. I've been to many Priest concerts and they were all great, They always had a great stage show and they always performed well. Good memories...If you like the heavier sound, give 'Freewheel Burning' a listen off the 'Defenders Of The Faith' album, I thought it was a pretty heavy song for its time. (still don't know the words!).
I saw Judas Priest with Krokus on their Turbo tour. On the floor of the arena. The amplifiers were so loud you could feel your chest vibrate the whole concert. Concerts back then were an event to remember and something to look forward to. No cell phones, no internet, half the cable channels as today. It was basically the only thing a kid had to look forward to if you could imagine that.
Judas Priest has been around since the 70's. If you want to hear a master peice.of.a album check out SadWings of Destiny released from 1976. Than you can start to see how Priest how layer the ground work for modern day Heavy Metal!
"Those Devil Dogs"..........awesome reaction. 30 years old. Seen them about 6 concerts over 40 years, suggest 'Unleashed in the East' album, to better connect to the 'classic Priest' live sound. Btw, the addition of Scott Travis to Painkiller totally transformed their speed and intensity.
Huge metalhead here and this is by far my favorite song. It’s an anthem of metal. Also, the live show is TOP NOTCH. They sound amazing live, any of the videos on youtube do not do it justice. The energy of being there is absolutely incredible, highly recommend it.
Painkiller is, without a doubt, one of the greatest metal albums ever produced. All killer, and no filler. A funny story from the first time I heard the title track: I asked my buddy "What the hell is a laser bullet?" to which he replied, "Must be what the GI Joes shoot."
Man, please react to 70s heavy metal Priest songs: Dissident Agressor, Exciter or Genocide. Beyond the realms.of Death is also a killer balad. The 80s include some of the "Friendly" Priest, but also great heavy songs like Sentinel and Ram it Down lml Great reaction and great album lml
Hello T, I've been subscribed to your channel now for about a year, and I really like your reactions. My favorites are definitely the earlier stuff like from the late 70's thru the early 90's. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden being 2 of my fav's.another good but underated Priest album is Ram It Down. They do an awesome cover of Johnny Be Good of course with the Halford touch to it. I think would another good album for you react to.
I am new subscriber, nice review! This album is just a masterpiece, all the songs are just amazing! You should try Sentinel live- Fuel for Life, Sinner live from 82 Live Vengeance, just shows off Halfords raw power! So many songs to listen , every album is different! Long live the Priest!
Run Of the Mill from their debut album Rocka Rolla , it is very emotional for me anyway and don't get me started on Halford's and band's perfomance ...trust me you will come back to this song , it is that good
Try his solo band albums Halford - Resurrection, Halford - Crucible and the best one for me Halford - Live Insurrection with Remake Demos bonus tracks, Covers, Live shows and his voice flawless on stage all in 2001. Try this and witness perfection on stage.
Priest, Maiden, AC/DC, Queen, Scorpions and more I'm not recalling.....we had some vocalists when I was coming up. Priest Live was Halford coming out on his Harley!!
Thanks for reacting to Hell Patrol! Painkiller gets all the attention as a song but the rest of the album is awesome too. I still listen to this at the gym a lot :) And yeah, Priest were awesome live, saw them many times. The thing I love most about them is how much they evolved with the times and got heavier, faster, and more proficient... and playing heavier metal music essentially meant they could utilize more of their musicianship, which they've mentioned in interviews before :)
I want to throw some Pantera requests out there and see if others jump in. "Revolution is my Name" and "I'll Cast a Shadow" which is off Reinventing The Steel, their last studio album I believe. Both songs are pretty friggin heavy, so may be so other subscribers will echo my sentiments. Even if you don't review, it might be something u might want to listen to at the gym. :)
Ended up with too much work for beer today.... tomorrow! Going thru the archives and found a couple gems I missed. In the 80s, Priest had already been honing their skills for a decade. I think their first record, Rock A Rolla came out in 1969. A Halford side project request... Fight - Nailed To The Gun. Like the reaction. Peace!
Hey. You should try to react to some of the stuff Rob Halford did outside Priest, you would probably dig it, very heavy with awesome vocals. Recommend "Nailed to the Gun" and Into the pit" from when he was with the band "Fight", and Resurrection from his self titled band Halford.
Painkiller is hands down Priest's best album, but far from the only good one. Later on in the 90's, Rob Halford split with the band (1991 - 2003) & they had a new lead singer (Ripper Owens) which changed the sound of their music but it was still good. Rob even did some vocals on the first album Jugulator. They only made 2 albums with Ripper (Jugulator & Demolition) which are both good & you should definitely check out. When Rob split from Priest, he formed a new thrash metal band called Fight, but they only made 2 albums, Fight: War of Words, & A Small Deadly Space, the first one being the best. "Into The Pit" from War of Words is one of my favorite Fight songs. Give it a listen! czcams.com/video/KAtxYftCIyA/video.html

"Highway Star" for example.

Sabbath was heavy, Priest is metal.

Such a good line
Since 1993??? Omg I wasn’t even born yet 🤣🤣🤣 but I really do love this mfckn album, hell patrol is my favorite one 🤘🏽
I listen to this one every day. His vocals in this is insane!

Priest live is amazing. Seen them back in June and they just killed. Listen to Beyond The Realms of Death and Exciter. Old school Priest.
All i can say to that is YES!!
I come back to this and others from time to time . I love these songs , man . And I gotta say that thumbnail is topshelf lol 👍
oh yeah! one of my favourites! i binged this whole album when i was 16 for almost a year.
Listen to Judas Priest "Beyond The Realms of Death" live Rising in The East

Priest is amazing live. I've seen them twice and they never disappoint.
Lead singer's solo group.
HALFORD - MADE IN HELL
It's a barnburner
"Nightcrawler" off this album would make a perfect Halloween reaction video. It's spooky.
