Linear drains for tile showers explained. Linear drains, also known as line drains, or trench drains, are becoming more and more popular, because they open up possibilities for tile that are not available with a regular point drain. With linear drain, the shower floor will be flat, but inclined or pitched to the drain. This means that large format tiles can be used on the shower floor, small mosaics are still an option, but not a necessity. It is important to choose a suitable tile that will not become slippery in a wet environment like a shower, if large tile sizes will be installed on the shower floor. In this video I explain what a Schluter Kerdi-Line drain is and show the general steps needed to install one. Many of these steps are relevant to other types of drains.

Good video, you should do a video on line or linear drain being hooked up with a traditional pre-slope vinyl liner and post slope.
Infinity makes a nice linear for vinyl pans.
Works nicely, only thing is pans get pretty thick in longer showers if you have a proper amount of slope
@@ndsrocks1 correct, I just got done doing a 92 in wide shower or a 92 inch solid surface curb. You have to have enough height, and they want you to have a half inch per foot not a quarter inch per foot on certain tiles, but yes you have to be aware and it's always good to have all the parts for you start especially the drain
you da best...
So when you come to tile it, you leave enough room for the entire grate body to sit in there, or does the grate body overlap the tile?
had the drain body , slice the folded membrane, brand new,in the bix ,razor sharp stainless,....quality control, got it replaced, but found 😮others w same issue
Sal, What do you make of Schluter Linear Drain failures where the fleece that was "glued" to the drain body has failed? Are these just Schluter QA issues, installation issuse or more of a design issue with how Schluter is bonding the fleece to drain body?
I am sure every manufacturer has failures, nothing is perfect, however out of the countless successful installs we only hear about the handful that have failed.
Yeah. TileCoach just did a vid on that issue. Has me concerned to use the line drains.
Start talking everyone into flofx.
@larrys5733 and in reality, these membrane systems and foam boards have really only been in use for about and maybe fifteen years on the other hand, pre slopes vinyl liners and post slopes have been around since I don't know the 70s. So I'll stick what is already true and fact. It's just another way or just a continuation of how companies make money, you can't blame them but you got to be smart enough to see through the BS. I've seen more and heard of more and watched more videos of newer membrane problems than any done correctly traditional system. I'll stick with what works instead of switching stuff up because I can't figure it out🤣
If Schluter respected the trade, they could at least put out a list of serial numbers or dates and offer a replacement of linear drains with possible adhesive problems.
What about the drain cap ? How do you adjust it so it's level with your tile?
There are adjustments on the drain grate.
HeySal what water proofing membrane did you do under this particular shower base? Is there a video?
This is a bonded system membrane goes on top of the mud, just under the tile.
@@SalDiBlasi ok thank you
Sal you work too hard!
😊👍
That looks like a one big mess.
I am definitely not a fan of all these steps you need to do with schluter systems.... My go-to always is a liquid membrane
