Irène almost broke her neck during choreography training. they spent a very long time mastering it and their naughty choreography is even crazier.

I knew she got hurt but I thought it was her back, not her neck. Either way, pain for the sake of art. Damn, the dedication! AND THEN they did 'Naughty'!

These two have never disappointed when together. There's another project by them 'Naughty' and that's even crazier. Monster is still to date one of the most iconic duo releases from a group.. And im saying that as a not very hardcore reveluv so you know the impact

  • @Thyrwyn
    @Thyrwyn Před 2 lety +87

Context: this was released some months after “Psycho”. Promotions for “psycho” didn’t really happen because of Wendy’s injury days after “Psycho”s release and her year long recovery.
“Monster” caught everyone off guard - Red Velvet concepts can be weird and embrace horror tropes, but “Monster” was darker - lyrically and visually - than other RV releases.
And the choreo and the performance really served as a wake up call to the industry/audience that Irene was not ‘just’ the original visual.
“Psycho” brought me into the fandom, “Monster” and “Naughty” made me a true believer.

Actually, they weren't planning on promoting Psycho in the first place because at that time, they still have their La Rouge concert in Japan which was cut short due to the pandemic.

    • @riffgroove

@@enluviezen9343 You don't have your facts straight.
Wendy got severely injured 3 days after Psycho dropped. That was why it wasn't promoted. They did their full month long tour of Japan, which they were already contractually obligated to do, but they did it without Wendy.
SM immediately stated that there would be no full group promotions after the Japan tour until Wendy was completely healed.
It was very soon after that that Covid hit.

@@enluviezen9343 Psycho dropped at the end of December.
Their tour of Japan was in February. A full month later.
They could have easily fit in a two week promotion period the way they usually do.
Except they couldn't do that with Wendy in a hospital bed.

    My theory...
One light, 2 shadows in the lyrics refers to 2 egos (or psyches or w/e, I'm not a psychologist) inhabiting 1 body, both vying for control. Both trying to dominate the other.
Seulgi's ego is the more aggressive, more overt of the two. Irene is more subtle and manipulative. You'll notice in the scene where they are puppeteering each other, when Seulgi is in control they are facing each other, but when Irene is in control, she's behind Seulgi. Seulgi's the one threatening with the gun, but Irene is the one who will sneak up on you when your sleeping. With this in mind, if you re-watch the video you'll notice quiet a few more references that support this theory.
As you noticed, in the beginning of the video Seulgi is the head of the monster but by the end Irene has assumed control is she is now the head of the monster.
So, as you said, over the course of the video there is a struggle to see who is in control but Seulgi finally gives in and Irene ends up being the one in control, the true monster, so to speak.

I remember when this came out and theorists went crazy :‘) I don‘t remember a lot but there was one that this was inspired by the novella „carmilla“ aka the first lesbian vampire story written in the 19th century. I never read the book so I can‘t say much to the accuracy or storyline but I still like that theory

i was able to find a pdf online of the book about a year ago! i think during a livestream when they were promoting monster was when they explained the concept and i would agree that the music video is more about that (what they said), although i think carmilla is a VERY strong underlying theme in mv. especially with the stained glass and greenery, it makes it look like the abandoned church/graveyard seen in the book. the white dresses in the bedroom also seems very similar!

all simply the best sub-unit that I have seen in several years / the concept is really good and their suits very well. the choreography is incredible, the songs perfect. have seen their maturity and their very concept evolves. Looks like the perfect mirror of A-PINK's sub-unit which was also very good. the 2 two sub-units have more mature concepts but RED VELVET is a bit darker than A-PINK which remains very colorful and fun.

First time I saw this video I had the impression that Seulgi was the monster. At the beginning you can see that Irene is sitting in the floor like a little kid and Seulgi is crawling down the mountain in four legs like a monster. I guess Seulgi possess Irene during much of her life, but eventually Irene cope with that and turn the tables. That's why Seulgi is at the back at the first monster but Irene is at the back at the last one. In my opinion this is not only a great concept and a great video but also the best song of that year.

I mean about the 9yo girl who plays with a doll called Irene which is her favourite among her collection of 5 and at night the doll awakens and controls the mind of the others? Lots have people have commented that Naughty, the other song from Irene and Seulgi, is crazier or better. I completely disagree. Naughty, is excellent for the chorography style called Tutting and it is without a doubt a good song but for me, nothing comes close to Monster.
Whether it be the mixing, the musical and vocal arrangement, the dub step being introduced, the whole song is phenomenal. The video adds the visuals, to match the music. The chorography adds again to the overall impact. It is a 'tipple whammy' that I have not seen in any other K-pop song or video. However, i have barley scratched the surface of K-pop so I am aware there are other fantastic songs and MV's out there but as a relative newbie, there is nothing like your first time!
If I were a student, I would make an entire thesis on the song and video.
I have read from people far more versed in Red Velvet and the sub unit of Irene and Seulgi, that the video is based on a gothic novel called Carmilla. Here is the Wikipedia synopsis:
Carmilla is an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by 26 years. First published as a serial in The Dark Blue (1871-72), the story is narrated by a young woman preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla, later revealed to be Mircalla, Countess Karnstein (Carmilla is an anagram of Mircalla).
So as you see, the video easily reflects this both lyrically and visually.
Not that I am obsessed! 😀
Thank you for your thoughts, reaction and interpretation.
