    my brother had the 86 300zx and I had the 82 supra ...we both owned them at the same time when we were young.. he is 54 and im 60 now... those were both the coolest cars in their time...i'd say his was alittle faster as his was 160hp and mine 150hp.. both mauuals...we used to drag race them on the freeways when we had no traffic... good times

    Great video! One thing that most people don't know, the up and down motion of the RPM gauge is actually supposed to be a boost indicator. The higher the bars, the more boost you're making.

    • @LuisAlvarezTorres
      @LuisAlvarezTorres Před 2 lety +1

      Having owned one, I can assure that the up and down feature was a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). No boost gauge on this car at all which was a bummer

      @user-yh5wt3ls1r Před 2 lety

      My NA 87 does it so i doubt that’s the case but cool idea nonetheless

    • @Z31Turbo
      @Z31Turbo Před 2 lety

      @@LuisAlvarezTorres Not possible, the TPS was only a 2 position switch, 3 for automatic, it only knew, open or closed, and WOT for auto downshifts. You are correct though, there is not vacuum sensor on the car, it's based on an algorithm I believe, not sure how exactly it works.
      You can test it though in a turbo car, rev the engine in neutral and the graph won't go up, but once you put it in gear and it has a load to work with the turbo can start working and it will go up. Turbos don't make boost without a load. Auto torque converter would add some load so manual would be best.

  • @1970PMD
    @1970PMD Před 4 lety +4

    Owned several of these cars. In stock form they were good for 1984. If any modification is performed then it is not a good car at all. A simple boost to 14.5 (1 bar) almost adds 100 hp to it. But the clutch wont take it and as speed increases so does body roll and the brakes are worthless. Good car to do some refined upgrades to it, today is as simple as finding a good shop or doing it yourself. Back in the 80's that was not the case. It is almost a shame to gut it and bring it to today's standards, this sample is better just to enjoy it as it left the factory. Nice car. Thumbs up.

    My mom owned a 1984 300zx 50th anniversary edition in wine/dark red when I was a kid, she bought it in 1988, 2 years before I was born. She had it till I was 7 when she was driving me somewhere one day and the car caught fire under the hood. Turns out the spark plugs had been recently replaced incorrectly. She sold it afterwards cause she was nervous about driving it again (especially with me or my brother in the car). We looked up the 50th anniversary model recently and almost fainted at how much it’s worth now, almost $40,000-50,000. Too bad she couldn’t hang onto it, but I understand her fears and concerns at the time, she is a mom after all. We loved that car though, I remember how the digital gages lit up at night and how it used to talk, I used to feel like I was in a space shuttle whenever we went anywhere. I’m turning 33 in August of this year, which is the same age my mom was when I was born. I’ve been looking to buy another 50th anniversary 300zx in dark red as a birthday present to myself, just like the one my mom owned, but finding one in good condition with relatively low miles has been like finding a needle in a haystack. Apparently only about 5100 of these cars were released in America, they’re considered collectors cars now, so I’ve got a lot of digging to do. Anyways, thanks for the video, it definitely brought back some great memories.

    Just discovered this video/channel, and while he says he's been doing this before Doug De Muro, I can see why Doug's channel is sooooo much better. I don't mean it as a put down, just an observation. The best advice I can offer is research, research, research! The audience is watching the video to learn something, so know what you're talking about first before making a video, otherwise it makes viewing pointless. The headlight washers are there because not only as they partially exposed, but when on, they get dirty just like with any other car. The suspension settings are S - soft (not sport) N - Normal and F - firm. The odometer isn't digital because at the time, there wasn't a reliable way to store the mileage figure indefinitely, particularly if you disconnected the battery for a long period of time. Advances in tech made that a reality years after. You could have demonstrated the subwoofers in the seats by simply placing a bottle of water on the seat, and record the vibrates created.

    You completely forgot about the G-force accelerometer which is the second, ( from left to right) of the center-dash sunken gauges Zs are most known for. It measured G-force acceleration/deceleration. I always wanted this car, however, when I was 18 in early 1989 I bought a fully loaded '84 that was as loaded as you could get outside of the 50th anniversary. It was stolen in NYC 2 years later. :-(

      I'm not really salty about it, I couldn't care less which people do what videos. I just know there would be the inevitable comment of "ur copying doug" (even though that hasn't happened yet), due to similar video style.

    • @shaunmark1
      @shaunmark1 Před 6 lety +2

      Good point, yeah I wouldn't be surprised either. Just start the video with a short introduction about yourself and how long your tenure is, that should avoid those comments. But if you get really popular, they'll flow in regardless... but hey, you'd be really popular! Doug has gone to supercars and crap no one can afford. Stick to the common man's car and you'll be a hit. That's what we can afford and are actually curious about.

    • @CoolStuffInWeirdCars
      @CoolStuffInWeirdCars  Před 6 lety

      That's the plan! It seems like everybody who starts out doing "normal" cars (not supercars and whatnot) ends up switching to high end and brand new cars almost exclusively. My plan is to stick with really whatever comes my way, whether it's old/common/obscure/whatever. Thanks for the comments!

    Maybe read the owners manual on the next car you discuss? lol
    Also, vertical movement of the tach is by the boost sensor, not the TPS (which is just an idle switch)...its actually the boost gauge lol

      It's actually a torque meter, if you'd read the owners manaul you'd know this though XD.
      But seriously, give the guy a break, it's a great informative video and he sums everything up pretty well.

    My 1985 300ZX Turbo would easily do a hundred and forty miles an hour and one time at 50 miles an hour I hit a f****** big deer and the only thing that it did was wad up the front plate under one screw, I did get lucky the deer was squatted and about ready to jump when I hit it in the rear I donkey punched it and it slid out about 50 feet in front of me got up and ran away, my dog did not appreciate it because he hit the dash but was all right
