  • In the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See, Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and her father Daniel flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie and Daniel soon find refuge in San Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. Marie’s path also collides with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope. Should this adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See be on your bingelist? Thanks for checking out my All the Light We Cannot See (2023) Netflix Limited Series Review!

Spoiler if you plan to read the book: Okay, while the acting was good and the series itself was fine, I am puzzled and deeply disappointed by something from the book left out of the series. Here it is.
In one part of the book, while Werner and Volkheimer and Neumann One and Two are traversing the cities of Europe hunting down Nazi resistors, they come to Vienna, where Werner sees a mother pushing her little girl on a swing. Let's just say that Werner makes a mistake when he soon after (wrongly) fingers their apartment (neither he nor his companions nor we know it's the mom's and little girl's home at the time) as a place where they are transmitting signals. He realizes this when he and his gang enter the apartment, but the mom and girl are tragically/accidentally shot when one of the men opens a closet door wherein the mom and girl are hiding. This surprises/frightens the German (can't remember if it's Volkheimer or Neumann One or Two), and, tragically, he kills the two.
Werner's mistake, and his guilt over this first, touching (remember, he sees the little girl swinging), and second, tragic (the little girl is soon after shot) event crushes him. He will not eat, he will not speak to anyone, and he walks out into a minefield in spite of the warning signs and the fact that everyone is shouting at him to, well, get out of the minefield. And this tragic shooting is CENTRAL to forming Werner's need to redeem himself, which he does later when he goes to save Marie-Laure. I'm not sure how the screenwriter and director could have left out this critical component in the development of Werner's character. It's just another example of how books are nearly always better than movies/shows.

Great performance by Aria Mia Loberti. For a newcomer in her first acting role, she did an amazing job. What she did it each scene to convey the story was enthralling to watch. Can't wait to see what other roles await her.

Take a breath and read the novel, Chris. It's beautifully written and textured on so many levels. I've only watched the first episode so far, but I was saddened to see that the magical story was reduced to a stereotypical war movie.

Sorry, Chris. I didn’t read the book, but I may have to change the title to All the Light Critics Cannot See! In spite of minor things like act and stereotyping Nazis, this show had me crying, laughing, amazed by great lines, and at times on the edge of my seat. I think we’ve become too critical and judgmental to the point we can’t see the beauty in things anymore. Most of the time I agree with your reactions, and certainly you have a right to your opinion about this series, but I found it one of the best shows I’ve watched in a very long time. I have not yet read the novel, but I will. However, I watched the first episode and will NOT waste my time on the rest! The acting was stilted, and the dialog was stereotyped. Did everyone in Brittany at that time speak English? The Germans had occupied St. Malo for four years, yet no one knew where the blind girl lived? How improbable was it that she could use and maintain a transmitter despite being blind? Finally, with the allies bombing the town to oblivion, I didn't even see the lights flicker, let alone the power go out. They must of had a very resilient power grid!

Thought it was a real shame they portrayed the nazis in such a clichéd way. Reminded me of a great quote from a documentary maker: “If the human features of Hitler are lacking in the image of him that is passed on to posterity, if he is dehumanized and shown only as a devil, any future Hitler may not be recognized simply because he is a human being.”

For anyone worried about reading the book because of everyone attacking the series, go read it! You shouldn't hate the series if you let each of them stand on their own merits. The book really digs into the message behind the professor's readings to the children. I think light, is really the book's big theme, the passage of it. The fact that light is all any of us are, waves passing by and through one another. The series theme was laid pretty plain in the last few minutes. Pain is no match for love. Some of the characters are the same. But each of these stories has its own message

I finished the show in one sitting and I enjoed watching it. Fates of main characters are completely tragic so the show left me with a sense of deep sadness (and even more sadness after I got to know what happened with characters in the final of the book). The onky downside for me was the portrayal of german officers. They are represented too cartoonish for me. At whole I was captivated by this story and I would advice watching it in one sitting as well. I didn't get irritated by accent of actors, but maybe it's because I'm russian so my attention doesn't focus on this.

I don’t understand why they did that with the Nazis, it made their evil so much less impactful because it felt fake. In the novel you could feel the layers to the evil, and it’s slow but effective grip on Werner.

    • @Atlantis-ik6eq
      @Atlantis-ik6eq Před 8 měsíci +4

@@jeank8061 Yeah. I'm reading the book now. And there were no scene yet where nazis would behave impolitely. The guy, who invited werner to repair his radio, for example, was not pointing a gun at him with phrases "repair or die" but left the room and had a phone call. After Werner repaired his radio he (mr. Ziggler as I can remember) served him a cake, gave him money and wrote a letter of recommendation. And overall he treated Werner very well.

Fully agree! I'm only halfway through the series and cannot comprehend why the choice to have the Nazi officers twisting their mustaches and waving guns all over the place was made. The book illustrated how insidious their program was, which made it far scarier than this show if you ask me. Other than that I find the cast utterly stellar and the cinematography stunning. I will watch Louis Hofmann in anything. Jonas forever.

As someone who has read the book, I'm a little worried about what this show will cut out and how the focus seems to be on the "romance". I originally wasn't interested in reading the book because I got the impression from the shows trailer that it was a cliche "star crossed lovers" ft. Nazis. But only in the last quarter of the book do the characters finally meet and only briefly. The rest is focus on character development that I'm worried will be lost in the show.

The real battle for Saint Malo is different than the short tv series. The German did allow people to leave and food was not an issue. The fighting was very intense and the old town was 90% destroyed but little French deaths. The garrison surrendered to US forces and not the resistance… that generally killed prisoners. I really liked it. Was pretty good for a short movie…tossing into the ocean the gem was sad. But SS did not kill their detainees quickly… they keep them alive for some time….

-The German funker wore a German sergeant's uniform but was called a corporal.
    - The Germans should have spoken German.
-Little combat action in St. Malo.
-It was also not really correct that people fled after the conquest, the citizens of Paris fled from the victory parade in Paris.

When I first saw the trailer of this I already knew what this show will look like to be and when I finally finished it I was right in every single detail. I tried to watched it for the hopes that it will reveal some new nuanced things that we haven't seen before in this kind of story but nope. The showrunners just literally do the most lazy thing in this kind of story set in world war 2 wether it's fictional or a historical story. The most obvious one is the forced romance between that fench blind girl and that German soldier who just came out of nowhere like they just literally kissed towards the end of the freaking show right in the end of the final episode like come on man! They just freaking met! Is this really how the writers think how people should've develop feelings for each other? It's just ridiculous and stupid like it's almost like a fanfiction written by a 12 yr old tween girl in middle school. And they don't even have chemistry at all!!! I would've even make them fall in love if I'm the showrunner of this show. It's just looks like a soft twisted fantasy of the showrunner and the writers of this show!

It’s a poorly written and twisted dark war adaptation. I read the book and loved it. Why Netflix felt they needed to stray so far from the book is beyond me. The actors are great but I give Netflix a -10 rating. They turned Uncle Etienne into a machine gun slinging resistance fighter, Marie into a radio broadcasting resistance conveying hidden messages/codes to locations of where to attack Nazi command center and Marie’s father into a car thief. At that point I couldn’t watch any longer. Pfennig and his desire to go to the Berlin National Institute was turned into a forced plunge into Nazi brainwashing. Netflix turned a beautiful light emitting story of hope into a very dark war drama. The book will leave you with hope and belief that no matter what side of war you find yourself there are people on each side who pray for peace and carry light and truth. Netflix interpreted very poorly this Pulitzer Prize winning book. Everything about this book netflix changed, from the young 12 year old Marie, her shy agoraphobic uncle Etienne who never left his bedroom, and the disillusioned Germany - loving Pfennig. How did Netflix get this so wrong?

I completely agree. I simply adored the novel and I am utterly disappointed in this series. Netflix changed the story so much. I think if you hadn’t read the book you would probably like the series. I, however, will stick to the book.

Yup. The book was dark yes, but it was a realistic painful darkness, where light would occasionally poke through. The show felt so hollow, the hatred and evil so basic and predictable.

So this guy reviewed the series and didn't read the book? Well then .. he has absolutely no idea what the beautiful novel reveals to readers forever. He seens obsessed with this actress and pretty desperate to please Netflix.

I was disappointed in the interpretation of the novel so much left out of the book.
That was so important to the narrative. Loved the book it stays with you. Netflix cast were tremendous but the script was lacking.

It's wretched, preposterous and baffling - with the exception of the scenes of Werner's indoctrination at the hands of the Hitler Youth. Enjoyed your review, though. Cheers.

I find it hard to watch the show. The cruelty which the boy is being treated by the germans. And simply how heartless and ruthless they are. At the other hand this means the acting is great because i believe and feel it. I also think this cruelty is represented in the world today. What is happening in palestin is absolutely inhumane, and i feel so helpless that the world is not stepping in and stopping the killing. So all that being said, ill continue watching the show when the world is an a beter place... Which is never i guess..

The book was marvelous and a lot of it has to do with the absolutely stunning use of the language in it (it won a Pulitzer for some reason I guess). The show fell flat, predictable, and a mishmash of the director's previous work in terms of style. Acting was mediocre and the dialogue just bad. I wanted to like it but ended up feeling so disappointed it hurt.

Did not read the book yet I found the series disappointing and poorly written. What a waste of time!

You're way too nice. The writing in this show is utterly horrible, boring and predicable. Characters do things that make ZERO sense, and the lines SOUND contrived. I only am watching it because of Louis Hofmann who (like you said) will always be Jonas from Dark. Dark is absolutely the best show I have EVER seen. Everything was perfect, make sense, the writing was phenomenal. No show will ever compare to it, either or get close to its genius.

Wow. This was just atrociously, and sometimes hilariously, bad. I'm astonished. The first episode was actually intriguing. All downhill from there, though. Episode 3 was hard to get through, and episode 4 was just infuriating in many ways. Loberti was solid. Along with Hofmann, the best actors in the series. Ruffalo, who I like, was just terrible in this. What was he trying to do with the accent? It was bad enough that most of the "French" characters had British accents, but Ruffalo's accent was ... distracting. Terrible. Levy should have stuck with Night at the Museum, because he was not up to the task of showrunning this one. I honestly can't believe how bad it ended up being.

Good actors. Unfortunately, the story was very cliche, with one-dimensional characters with no nuance and the “magical diamond” was beyond the pale.

As someone whose favorite book is All the Light We Cannot See, this show is just... bad. It's so hard to watch it as it's own thing, because I can't help but try to find the characters and the story that I loved from the book. I keep searching for the depth, for the emotional connection; but it's just not there. I almost completely lost interest after the ending of the first episode. They've changed the story so drastically that it's difficult for me to watch, but I'm pushing on.
The book is cruel, heartbreaking, elegant, beautiful and ugly, and has so much depth and meaning to it that the show just looks like a clumsy imitation by comparison.
For once, I agree with the critics. "The disappointing adaptation of Anthony Doerr's award-winning novel offers an awkwardly paced narrative that lacks the heart and depth of the original story."

Okay, so far this is what I’m seeing in the common section for anybody wandering about.
People who have read the book:
“Ughh this is the absolute worst Netflix adaptation, how dare they ruin such a work of art!”
people who have NOT read the book:
“Omg the actors were so good, they did a phenomenal job, such a work of art from the characters! (besides Mark Ruffalo, his British accent was mid, but still a good actor)”
