Fascinating historical presentation of a time and a place that I did not know anything about. Michael the Brave (and he deserves that title) won many battles that he should have lost, pulling a rabbit out of the hat more than once to turn the tide of battle. If he had not alienated all his allies and potential allies, he may have lived to complete his task of the unification of Romania. As it is, he did a remarkable job with what he had. No one he met in battle surpassed him as a field commander. It was a lack of men and resources alone that caused his final defeat. Great series! Kept my interest for the whole time, despite the plethora of unfamiliar names and places I had to keep up with.
Thank you sir. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Baba Novak / Starina Novak - a true legend amongst serbians and romanians. The friendship dates from way earlier than the 1600. Mihai's great ancestor and Vlad the Impaler's grandfather "Micea I of Wallachia" helped knez Lazar on the battle of kosovopolje, when the great knight Obilic made his great work of art.

He was a briliant general, yet he didn't die on the battlefield against the Turks, but he was betrayed and killed by Christians who were supposed to fight along his side against the Turks...
I personally consider him the most important ruller of any Romanian pricipality of all times, because for the first time since Burebista, he managed (even briefly) to unify almost all the Dacian lands in a single country- he was even called "Malus Dacus" (bad Dacian) by his enemies. Anyway, he managed to do a lot of things in only 8 years of rulling, with such small resources both in manpower, weapons and money.
As for the Romanians, they were always at the confluence of greater powers and empires interests, always heavily outnumbered and outgunned in most of the battles against Turks, Austro-Hungarians, Polish, Russians, Germans...
Yet somehow they managed to survive...

Every romanian man has little bit of Mihai left in them. Also Vlad, Ștefan, Mircea and others also... It just surfaces when is needed.
I'm a Wallach from Serbia, very near to Donji Milanovac, the place of birth of Starina Novak. We have had many warriors (hajduks) who fought the Turks for hundreds of Years, and separated from Romania we still call ourselves Wallachians, have our own culture and our own language.
Voi sunteți români ca şi noi, vorbim aceeaşi limba.
You and us, Wallachians from Romania are both former east Romans, speaking same language. Therefore Romanians - of Roman origin. Well Romanized Dacians but former Romans in the end.
Wallach is a german word, so is an EXTERNAL name (exonim), so why you call yourself with a foreigner name and not a name from your language? It's a non sens
I tell you why. You call yourself walahians because serbian call you that way to create a separatism from romanians, and then to asimilate you.
You "call yourself walahians" because you are brainwashed by slavs
There was definitely power in Vlad’s bloodline
Vlad's bloodline was a warrior bloodline. The Basarab bloodline gave numerous warrior princes. Wallachia was known for its warriors, this spirit being relevant still today with the southerners being much more conflict seeking, more temperamental, more jealous/envious, Moldova was the seat of intellectuals and the few warrior princes being related to the Basarab dynasty (Stephen the Great being Vlad's cousin) while Transylvania was known for its merchants. This format still applies today, albeit Moldova is less of an intellectual center, Bucharest managing to somehow even the odds in this regard. Still, roughly 2/3 of our major artists, writers and scientists either hailed from Moldova or were educated there.
Mihai was not really related to Vlad. He was not a Basarab.
@@alexwallachian7720 Depends. Most historians today seem to agree that Michael was the bastard son of Patrascu cel Bun, which was from the House of Draculesti, Vlad's branch of the Basarab dynasty.
@BLUE DOG No idea what you mean by J's. Also, for the most part princes like Vlad were the tax collectors. The boyars collected the taxes locally, which were handed out to the prince's treasury, which in turn were sent to the Sultan.

@@jimijimbow2830 well, after Mihai Wallachia fell under the Ottoman ruling... although we were never an Ottoman province like Hungary or Bulgaria, we still had to pay tribute... life conditions were never better for us until the independence war almost 300 years later, when the Ottomans were pushed out of the Balkans
@@aviaxis6261 come on man after that Vlad Drakul and this treacherous Mihay any other ruler would had just annihilated such a nation. You have to agree.
@@jimijimbow2830 Romanian history is much more complex than this... remember we are here for 3000 years... In this instance, Vlad, even though he scared the shit out of the Ottomans, at historical scale he wasn't as big of a deal as his grandfather Mircea the Wise for instance, who freed Dobrogea. Also Vlad couldn't even be compared to his cousin, Voievod of Moldova, Steven the Great (notice our voievods have a nickname), who ruled for 47 years, had a big fight almost every year and only lost a couple of them in total. The difference between him and Mihai was that he was extremely good at diplomacy and (unlike Mihai) he never fought everybody in the same time, completely alone. After Mihai the Ottomans tried to wipe us completely many times but our Latin culture always prevailed, and we also had heroic voievods who managed to resist even without and army. For instance Constantin Brancoveanu was captured by the Ottomans and forced to watch all his 7 children and his wife being beheaded in front of him then he famously said something like: on my honor, I will not be a Turk until my head sits up there. And so it was, we never got to be Turks thank to his sacrifice.

One of the greatest stories in history!
in Czech lands: Rudolf II. moves his seat of power from Vienna to Prague. He's known as a patron of arts and a supporter of alchemy and arcane arts.
Meanwhile in Romania:
(jokes aside, he's the only person I know of this story. He's kinda popular figure of Czech folklore for aforementioned reasons. Somehow uneventful period of Czech history, no-one much cares to elaborate. Man never stops to learn and I am grateful for filling some gaps in European history of this period. Until now it was something like: Constantinople fell. Something something something, Turks pushed on. Battle of Mohács. Something something something, Turks pushed on. And then Turks are at Wienna :D)
PS: Mihai was a really cool guy. I always admire men with vision and fearless and clever commanders who go against the odds, capable of thinking outside the box and favoring initiative.
I must say that their is so much history that you haven't even heard of. Thanks HistoryMarche for filling up my history memory bunk :)
Eastern history is very underestimated. We only focus on western history over here. Seems that the whole of eastern europe has been a battlefield for about 2000 years, on/off.

Pretty much so. And 99% the times the western Europe promised help against the Eastern attacks on Europe, they never materialised.
@@ancaas7945 Exactly!
Like during the Crusades. If the Western powers focused with the Romans to do a common cause against Islam, then maybe the would have successfully defeated them. And the Kingdom of Jerusalem perhaps would have existed a bit longer.
But instead personal power, greed & wealth always stands in the way...

Otherwise I'll prescribe it to the usual ignorance of proud and narrow minded Easterners...
