I've never been interested in learning Magic the Gathering.
I'm now interested in learning Magic the Gathering.
Jason Lu do you like people or cars?
Welcome to Heaven, my friend.
Jason Lu It’s fun!
I wanna play Magic again.
come over then. i got pizza rolls.
Can I have some if we play some draft?
Nice video man. I am not a beginner by far, but I enjoy watching these videos and commenting on questions. I never knew of the chat/judge, so TY. Also you should just put that and the Gather link below your video. Keep up the great job. :)
I used to play, long time ago. I even still have my old cards! I have always wanted to get back into it, and now I might.
kakapo I recently got back into it and I’m really enjoying most of it. I miss the style/aesthetic of the older sets, but other than that everything’s great
As an old school YuGiOh fan I found this extremely interesting thanks Patrick
Th3Jez my son is a big yugioh fan
and he loves magic cards as well
we play for hours
17:50 why is he putting a napkin on this leg?
18:10 OHHH PIZZAAAA
I started playing Pokémon TCG, them thought 'oh that's too easy' so I tried Yu-Gi-Oh. I was like damnnnnn that's complicated. Then I saw magic.......
Great video, Pat. Also, that Rick and Morty play mat... just too good.
Rick and Morty is shit
I already know how to play Magic, have my own deck, but I just like having you explain things to me with your very soothing voice.
This reminds me, I need to get a Snapcaster Mage for my Mono-Blue Tron Deck. Also, AMAZING guide! One of the most detailed and best guides I have seen for MTG. I will definitely show my friends this guide since a couple of them want to get into MTG. I would really like to see more MTG content from your channel too!
The most clear and well put beginners guide out there. 10/10, great content!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH HOLTZMAN!!!! Really happy you made one! Been waiting for you to make a beginners guide for peeps like me! Been building a deck since your last MTG video. I keep jumping between commanders. I think I will settle on a black and red deck for my first one. It's tough to decide.
I just started playing magic. There is so much to take in. Love it so far. Glad I found this video.
Thank you for the video! I've been wanting to start playing Magic and this video convinced me to go to the store and get my first box to get started!
started watching streamers on twitch who play this game, so decided to learn about the rules so i can enjoy the streams better.
this is by far the best beginner mtg video on youtube. amazing job!
I've never heard Patrick so enthusiastic haha. Great content as always
I've been meaning to learn about Magic for years and I always found it too daunting, but this is a very nice introduction! Thank you :D
Excellent video! Very informative and easy to understand, all with an excellent, professional delivery.
Awesome Holtz, I look forward to future videos
Thanks for taking the time to make such a thoughtful and detailed video about learning the game. I'll have to buy some starter decks and see what it's like these days.
Also, that pizza...
Thank you for making this video! Your explanation of the mechanics was extremely helpful!

This is by far one of the best how to play vids I've ever seen
I've been curious about Magic. Thanks for the video.
Randomly looked up Magic guide's, clicked o. Your vid, and immediately recognized your voice. I used to watch your destiny vids years ago man.
My bf is really into magic since his youth and I wanted to learn more to be able to understand him better. But I realised pretty fast that this smt I have completey missed out on! I love it. Thank you for making these videos, they are helping me on my journey of learning :)
I still have my cards from when i played 20 years ago. A few things have change since than, i wonder how bad my old deck would do against a new one.
Dude I've been waiting for this video ever since you said you played in one of the planet destiny podcasts!! I'm psyched!!! xDDD
I played magic the gathering a few years ago then I completely forgot everything about it. yesterday I picked out some cards and one look made me hooked
This is one of the better intro videos. I haven't play Magic since the mid 90's. A lady my wife works with has gotten me interested in it again. Now knowing that there is actually a competitive circuit might pull me away from poker.
Fun fact, most people in vegas that scrub out of competitive magic go play poker. Usually scrub out doing that too, but the skillset is largely the same.
my deck I use:
3x Sigarda herons grace
4x Thalia's lieutenant
4x Expedition Envoy
4x Consuls lieutenant
1x Ajani, Mentor of Heroes
2x Thalia Heretic Cathar
4x Hamlet Captain
4x veteran cathar
4x Always Watching
11x Plains
11x Forest
1x Blossoming Sands
1x Temple Garden
Outbreak Prime i lost all my ajanis and my elspeth in my binder. I used to have a beast white green human+angel deck.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
God, I wish this video existed when I first learned this game XD
Very informative. I'd recommend this guide to any new MTG players.
Same. I actually got into the game and learned how to play by watching Achievement Hunter play it. Needless to say, it took awhile
nice vid i needed a refresher and also kick ass play mat love rick and morty man great tv show
I am just starting out playing MTG (my boyfriend got me on board, and now I'm hooked, but still a total noob and a bit awful) and this video really helped! Subbed!!
Great video, thanks for the advice it was very helpful, I'm new to the game and it looks really daunting to a new player but your video has answered a lot of my questions. A big like from me, have also subbed your channel 👍
This video was very helpful. My friends invited me to play magic one day, and I fell in love. I want to start playing but I don’t know much and I’m pretty shy so it’s kind of hard to ask people for help.
I actually just got into the game. so I found this very helpful
Please keep these coming. I've been interested in Magic for a while, but all of the information just seemed overwhelming. Especially all of the movements you make as a player, signifying what has been used and so on.
Loved the video, look forward to more so I might be able to play one day.
Matt I could give you some tips..
The game is not as complex as it may sound. I noticed that their is a lot of unnecessary information for a new player. If you have any questions feel free to ask. :)
Damnationization do you have to have the mana already down on the table before you can cast a creature for example if it costs 4 forest?
Damnationization and it always seems like I'm just placing a land down then ending my turn until I have enough mana to put down a creature
Yes Rob, you must have the proper mana on the table before playing the spell. It sounds like you don't have the proper "mana curve" (Google it). Normally you want spells to cast at most parts during the game. So if you have a hand full of 4 casting cost spells or more you will not be able to do anything until turn 4 and that is of coarse if you get that much mana. In general, it's good to have cards that very in casting cost. A lot of new players what the BIG creatures so they put high casting cost spells in their deck, but then get killed before they can get them out. Any questions feel free to ask I have been playing for several years now, have won several pre-release events & drafts. :)
Loved it :) Great video!
thanks for the detailed explanation. super video.
This helped me so mutch thank you so mutch! :)
Patty, you ever gonna follow up with this vid? Would love it if you did. Maybe more detail on how artifacts and enchantments and stuff work, when to best use them and different things like that.
Just started playing magic. Now i need that R&M playmat!
VERY well made Explanation Video!!!
It was very helpful good job, earned a like from me!👏
This is a really great video. Having my wife watch it so she can learn to play as well.
Same here but instead it's the dad I'm showing this to
Ill be using this video for all new inductees i train. thanks a lot i went through a lot before deciding this is what i want to recommend. great vid and very accurate info (except where you showed lotus vale and said some lands create colorless lol she makes 3 of any ONE color( hardly relevant, as you didnt actually SAY lotus vale could do this, but it WAS on screen when you said it lolol)
great vid
This was so helpful!!!
Great video! Thank you!
thanks bro, super helpful!
Yeah I'm just Getting started, going to try tournament play
More magic content would be great. I love this game but am horrible at it and apparently playing it incorrectly. Thanks for the info Holtzman
3:25 oh, tribal. Only ever relevant for Tarmagoyf nowadays. XD This is actually a pretty succinct video. Very nice. I'll make sure to show someone this if I'm teaching them how to play.
my man :) kept hearing you talk Mtg in the podcast. I think most people know how to play, you might find good luck with deck techs etc.
Thanks this help a lot
More Magic? YES! Do more!
This video is hands-down the best beginner's MTG video I have ever seen.
Thank you so much for making this. I'll be using this as the go-to video to introduce my friends to Magic!
That pizza at the end looked so tasty.
I've only ever been into Yu-Gi-Oh but lately I've been dying to get into magic. I'll definitely be looking out for more videos. maybe I'll buy an actual set sometime this week, with a little advice from you I mean. the guys at my hobby shop can be a bit intimidating, yk?
Christian Corchado go for it
it is very interesting
I just started playing two months ago
I love it
I don't play anymore, but great video, this is better what Wizards released a decade ago lol
Exactly!!! I got sooo confused when I watched that
Thank you so much
Magic is awesome!
This was totally out of fucking left field. Woke up this morning, looked at my notifications and had to do a double take. But hey. I love destiny and mtg. So this is nice.
Thank you!
Bless you Sir. Bless you.
Omg finally, ur the best
The pizza at the end lol
Hey bud, I've been watching your stuff and listening to the Planet Destiny/DCP podcasts for awhile and I really appreciate the content you guys put out. I used to play MTG and recently have been considering getting back into it. On last weeks podcast you mentioned card kingdom decks and I was wondering if you might consider making a video regarding how a new or returning player might go about getting into mtg. Not really the rules or strategies but more the beginning steps and process of investing time and money to get the most value out of both. I've heard that into decks and premade MTG decks aren't worth it and I'd like to hear your thoughts on the topic. Thanks for all the great content! Cya starside :P @Patrick Casey
The rick and morty mat is amazeballs
Finally found this cuz I just got into the game
You should record some duels and upload them! I would love to see that!
that Rick and Morty mat is amazing g
It requires 200 iq points to comprehend it.
this helps alot first timer playing. i got 5 days to learn how to play
Great video! Trying to get back into playing the game and convincing my gf to play :D As far as I can tell you never continued yes series ;( Hope you chose to at some point!
you missed Tribal in the various card types ;) Nice intro though, I've been playing for a few years before I discovered destiny so it's cool to see other Destiny players also being interested in playing and more so learning about Magic the Gathering :)
Tribal is fairly old thought right? None of the sets in the past couple years have included it, so my assumption is that he didn't include it because it's unlikely that new players will be seeing it
Synthetic Reign Probably. He should make sure to mention it when he gets to some of the more in-depth videos. Overall, I'm pretty happy that he's doing this. I've been trying to teach my friends how to play and these videos will be pretty helpful.
Nimble Sloth he actually put it in the bottom right of the screen in small text
The legend rule was changed, it now has that you can't have 2 planeswalkers with the same name, you can have Chandra, bold pyromancer and Chandra, Pyrogenuis on play, but you can't have 2 of either one of the field
I wish I had friends to play Magic with. Played those Duels of the Planeswalkers games a few years ago and loved them. Would love to get cards of my own and play with people irl but no friends. :(
my boyfriend convinced me to play so he can have someone to play with :))) now I love it
I fucking love Magic. Started playing bout 3-4 years ago and stopped about a year ago. Never had anyone to play and also lost my binder full of great cards and planewalkers. Havent played since then, too devastaing tbch. My decks were never the same again.
Bubblesframe I played magic as well, I had people to play with, but the shop was always full, so for me as a foreigner it was hard to get friends :/ I still play online sometimes, but not the same
Nexus Noodle i never bothered playing online. Its way different and its way better playing peoplr in person.
Bubblesframe I know that's why I only play online once a year, so I remember this beautiful game :)
I own a kebab shop and right next to my shop is a eb games (game stop) and they do these tournaments all the time, have no freaking idea on how to play the game. I might give them a run for their money now haha. cool vid, always good to take a break from destiny
Someone at a store gave me a welcome deck of red and blue mana and I'm trying to learn since I have my first match on Saturday lol
Legit question, didnt they revise the Planeswalker Rule? Now its each unique planeswalker, regardless of sharing the same root name. can be on a battlefield at once... or am I getting that wrong?
i legit was thinking about starting to play magic
You play magic?!? YES!
Does anybody know what packs the master piece cards are in?
Liked for that tasty looking pizza at the end.
That pizza at the end, though.
ty
Is there possibly an app for finding out more info on a card your own?
Pat, what if the attack and toughness are two stars?
I want to know where that rick and morty playmat came from its awsome
is it too late for me to start learning and getting cards now ;/ ?
Nashville resident. i used to be addicted to magic from like 95 to 04. are there any local places to get back into it?
Man I was interested now idk to much shiiit to know damm
8:37 Wrong. You can have both out as they don’t share the same card name.
Tribal is a supertype, like Basic, or Legendary.
This is almost exactly like the Whackbat scene in Fantastic Mr Fox.
I’ve played a ton of hearthstone, I thought maybe give this a try. It seems confusing asfuck, how long did it take you guys to understand and be able to put this to practice? Also, is there any differences between the online and irl version? Much love.
Tragic the saddening. There I got it out, been holding on to that.
(Love magic btw) :P
More like Tragic the Garnering™. :P
Sorry, that was bad. It was a FALLOUT reference, by the way.
Hue hue
I just liked and it was 2.9k but now it's 3.0k LETS GO!!!
If you target a person with lightning.. can that person block it with a creature?
