One of the better videos - because you're showing everything, including some of the things that haven't gone as expected initially. It really helps to plan for what can go wrong. So many how-to respray videos don't bother with this.
I've done the marble effect quite differently myself on a previous build. I sprayed the lighter colour down first (or the colour I want to have create the marble patterns), then spray the darker (or more dominant) colour on top. Then I took a large zip lock bag that I can fit my hand into, and applied it while that latter coat is still wet, making sure the plastic is scrunched up under my palm. This removes random portions of the latter colour coat exposing portions of the previous coat with similar patterns. Though I got more large pattern swoops and swirls as oppose to your more tight cluster style pattern. Both are nice for different reasons
Great video mate wish you uploaded this video last week, before I painted my frame would have done the same. Definitely using this technique next time . You should try cheaper spray paints like Kobra and hycote, I found they worked well but your better at painting than me you would get a better job . Cracking job mate looks awesome 👏
@@rickychopper Mine is something between blue and purple, but the paint is mostly gone. Too many scratches and dings besides some superficial rusty spots New paint job is sadly needed
👍🏼 my Rockhopper build is going well except some of the parts I’ve ordered are taking a long time to get here due to supply chain issues. So far I have stripped the bike down, cleaned the parts and used touch up paint on some of the components thanks for your helpful videos for us beginners
I’m a Montana Gold fan as well. Very wide range of color choices. I noticed that the basecoat non-metallics sprayed more smoothly than their metallics but it may also be because metallics show flaws easier. I don’t recommend their glossy clear coat because it takes forever to harden. Will try 2k hardener next time.
Natty finish! A resounding success. It's nice that the colours are aren't entirely uniform, like a personality (bikeality?) it seems organic. Love your content, many thanks for all the uploads. 🚴👍
Kind of funny, I've been watching your videos for a while and just realized that I used Montana paint and a 2k clear. I follow old shovel on YT and he only uses spray.bike and he sprays a lot closer than you did with yours. Maybe you had a bad nozzle or bad batch. I'll be posting pics of my 79 Schwinn Le Tour IV on my Instagram, you'll see it in sure. Great videos!!! You inspired me to ask more of myself with bikes.
The distance for spraying depends on what you’re doing with Spray.Bike. The colours you can really get in there and spray literally an inch away without fear of runs really. The zinc primer was a massive no go for that and the clear is the same. Both have to be sprayed from much further back. I really do think Montana plus a 2K clear is the way forward.

Absolutely love it. I've done three bike painting projects with self-made custom decals, and now for my last frame I'm sure to try out this one. Thanks for the inspiration! :) PS. I've used Maston One paints and heavy duty spray filler+primer for the base. Awesome results with 2k spray lacquer on top of them. I have a video of those on my channel (the fat bike "Metamorphosis" video) if you're interested in checking how that paint job turned out :)
The propellant is dissolved in the liquid paint in the can. If you spray too much at once you end up with propellant still boiling out of the paint after it lands on your subject: see 1:18. “Oh my god, sick!” I was thinking the same thing:)
Nice looking paint job. Spray dot bike does seem a bit hit an miss depending on what you’re trying to do by the looks of it. Looking forward to the build video 👍🏻
I sometimes feel a bit bad criticising the paint as I'm always learning but others are better without having to put in the extra work that this paint requires.
I thought maybe you could try using a large car washing sponge, or even a dish washing sponge. Still comes up ok though, definitely a lot better effect than I expected, you did really well. I actually like the pink/blue/purple colours and might have done a blue base with pink and purple sections. The pastel look is really cool.

I teach high school metalwork. Try to teach teenagers to use correct rattle can spray painting techniques. They insist on spraying another colour over a wet colour. Has an effective marble finish.
@@MonkeyShred yes, regular rattle cans. The pigments sort of fall out of suspension & reblend when wet is sprayed on wet. They particularly like when one can is low on pressure & the paint spits out in drops.
Your zinc primer can needs to be shaken really well prior to start, then you need to stop using long strokes to paint ( zinc tends to build up at the tip, keep a lint free rag handy to wipe spray tip off periodically during spraying to remove the excess) use small short strokes instead & don't forget to shake the can as you continue ( do this w/ all the colors you use).
I do Like your 2nd Method of Scrunch and Spray... Could Do Crystal Camo by combining Methods 1 and 2.. that would Look BadAss Mate. Sorry Im Running Live Comments (Pausing after each Bit that Grabs Me)
@@MonkeyShred I’ve a 96 Stumpy I bought a few months ago. I’m currently prepping the frame and forks before applying several coats of 2K Max clearcoat. I was originally going to do a full respray in a different colour but then decided I didn’t want to lose it’s originality. It’s got plenty of minor chips and scratches in the paint but no serious rust. So, I thought 2K clearcoat after some fine touch up might be the way to go. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the heads-up about Graff City in an earlier video. They’re really keenly priced on the 2K clear!
when youre painting something with weird angles try to paint awkward areas first so paint doesnt build up at the end NO VIDEOS MENTIONS THIS so i cant blame ppl for making this mistake 1:37 which would Help at 5:13 also
Not sure if I've asked before but what camera do you use? Really like the concept but as you said the spray.bike paint isn't brilliant, I noticed on one of old shovels vids it looks chalky. Great content thanks for sharing.
Camera should be linked in the description 😉 I think the chalkiness is the formula they use unfortunately. It seems to be worse on bright colours. I’ve not had the same problems with Montana at all.
@@MonkeyShred yeah I like Montana I'm not to far from Nottingham and the shop there is brilliant. Molatow paint pens are good to I did a bmx frame year's ago covered in tags and weird doodles.
It was complete bare metal. There shouldn't have been anything on it. It could have been the aerosol in the paint potentially... being captured by the thicker paint and bubbling off as it evaporates. Maybe.

Ok thanks surprisingly it's a survivor and in great condition, I don't think it needs much spent so far owes me £30 for new crank arms and derailleurs. Any more cost will be minimal, doesn't need respray just decals if I want to go that far?! Fix up cheap and sell cheap just to get on the road again!! 👍😁
You took a risk and won. That's admirable. I've wondered how they got that interstellar look in the '90s. Now I know. One question is how does it look from 20 ft., from 50ft? How granular and/or how macro do you want it? A graphic design challenge. Do you care?
Just a pipe dream. Since most spectators are no closer than 20 ft., it might be a consideration for visual effect. Also, how much do the colors blend when the bike is in motion? Farther away, less; close range, more? -- Got to humor these barmy Yanks.
Where did you get the decals? or are they stencils that ou made yourself? I just ordered some decals from aliexpress for my planned project but dont know if it will work, if they can be removed at all or if they left a lot of paint behind. Please let me know what u used because it looked great!
Man! I hesitated before posting, and watched a few of your videos first before comenting. but after this one man Ive gotta say... You need to adapt your method to each paint. There is *NO* paint that you can "just do it any way you like"; any pro will tell you. You have great, awesome ideas for your end results, end products... but you have got to understand this chemistry better. Tehnique is fundamental with any paint, even more crucial with spray cans. Spray cans nowadays are specialist products, not anymore good ol automotive generic stuff... Some of the problems you have filmed really look like temperature issues, prepping the cans is important. Perhaps you're not shaking them enough, or letting them sit too long after shaking. Also next times try letting the cans sit in hot water (65c-70c) I had to laugh when you sprayed that block of wood...no way in hell that was a good idea ;-) paint will soak into it man!! This bike turned out ***SIIIIICKKK*** man kudos to you and the educational exploration you keep sharing with the world

I’ve tried the warm water trick for cans once but it seemed to create more splatter so I abandoned it tbh 😅 Shaking the cans I think I do it as per can instructions. I know I set a timer for the 2K clear I use sometimes to make sure that’s mixed properly. But yah. Always learning 😌

Looks good. I'm not suprised the one can of clear didn't hold up to the polishing though! I'm actually putting together another video already with my left over cans with some more tips that I've learnt. FIngers crossed for better results.

2K can take some time too! I've been caught out recently... I have some fresh paint to repair now.

Ahhh interesting! That makes sense! Weird how it doesn't do it on other paints though. Maybe it's something to do with the zinc in the paint too?

Cheers! I think a sponge might be too consistent but maybe one of those microfibre gloves that looks like a mop could leave some interesting shapes!

The colours and effects are very good. The 40grit finish would drive me round the bend.
Yeah, it definitely doesn't allow a glass smooth finish, unless you use lots of clear I guess!

As in how much of the effect can you see from 20ft etc? It does blend in to the black the further away you get. I'm not too bothered though.

I got them off eBay and used them as stencils. They're jsut a standard Scott decal.

I've used Spray Max 2K clear on the previous few builds. Seems to be around £15 a can.

iv used this Spray . Bike paint and its absolute rubbish dont waste your money
You can get some half decent results but I would say there are better options out there for your money
Show the whole bike frame next time, few more angles.
