- Multi percussion solo by James Boznos - OZNO.
Zoon is a composition by American Composer OZNO which is in 4 movements. The psychological affects of drones fascinate me in the way one’s attention usually drifts away from the drone - to the moving solo line, with the constant “humming” of a pedal tone/tones, subtly floating in and out of focus. Pitches or rhythms can be drones. In Zoon a chord progression of 4 chords unfolds over 16 minutes. To these drones, another layer of polyrhythms are added creating a moire pattern like a pebble thrown into a pond. The four movements are played attacca and are each a different interpretation of drones.
I. Rubik's- a mathematical drone of permutations like the rubik’s cube.
II . Nisia- a form of music from the Greek Islands. A drone of the beach.
III. ACME- the nemesis of roadrunner. A drone of a very fast bird on a straight desert road.
IV. The Mirror - the drone of a mirror in an empty room.
In my initial conception of this work, a primitive sound system or an IPOD with portable speakers is controlled by the performer, however more elaborate playback; spatializing the drone throughout the hall with the help of a sound engineer, would also be possible.
