Liz Fraser singing in tongues. Great song, thanks for giving it some love.

A briliant album. More than worth a full run through. Not a bad track on it.

„Pearly-dewdrops’ drops“ was my first Cocteau twins song and it’s still my absolute favourite
Also I a song that’s on number tone of my on repeat on Spotify since January and I think you’d love it: Freur - Doot Doot, it’s absolutely beautiful

Heaven Or Las Vegas the album is a classic.
Maybe it's a bit late, but you should check out their version of Frosty the Snowman. A whole new twist to a holiday classic.
Also, Serpentskirt featuring Faye Wong. This Asian-only version finds Elizabeth Fraser trading verses with Chinese sensation Faye Wong. They mash really well.

Great choice Nick! I used to drive to the park and sit and listen to Cocteau Twins some 30+ years ago with my now wife. Always wonderful music to enjoy with the one you love.

I love that Miley Cyrus did an actually very passable cover of this at a Vegas opening event. Marvelllous. Cocteau Twins rock, Grangemouth's finest!

I first heard this when i listened to the entirely Rolling Stone 500 during the pandemic. Totally out of my comfort zone and it blew me away. It epitomised my bothering to do that (straying from my usual just listening to what I know/like). Great reaction.

Great selection for a reaction, Nick. Since you liked this, you might give Beach House a try for a recent, well-crafted, if less intense, version of dreampop.

    Timeless melody.
Interesting fact, that intro was first used in... 1984! listen to the beginning of
Pearly - Dewdrops' Drops on the Old Grey Whistle Test at exactly 0:07 to 0:10, Heaven or Las Vegas riff! 🎉😮

But is it that? Or is it adapting the intro of Say Hello Wave Goodbye by Soft Cell?

    • @thesoundlikechameleons2082
      @thesoundlikechameleons2082 Před 7 měsíci

@Grithron2 Well spotted! never would have known that... and this came before Pearly. Looks like Robin intentionally knew and borrowed those 4 notes... so Soft Cell influenced Cocteau Twins to a degree?

Just a beautiful period for guitar music. Add my bloody Valentine, lush (I recommend sweetness and light for a dreamy sound) and my favourite the more driving swervedriver.
    Lovely descriptive review Nick.

You might enjoy Explosions In The Sky. Zombi is cool too but more of a spooky sci-fi sound. Both bands do instrumentals.

A great song (and band). I was thinking as I listened to you talk about bands with female singers doing their unique thing and that thought immediately made me wonder if you had ever listened to anything from the band Pylon (Vanessa Briscoe Hay's vocals certainly were her own unique style). I did some searching to see if you had any Pylon reactions and I did not find any, so, if that's true, its long overdue. Pylon in many ways was the most important band to come out of that Athens, Georgia scene that fostered REM and the B-52's. Their danceable funk/punk (like their contemporaries Gand of Four) spawned many other bands and sounds that can be traced back to them. Its essential listening.
There are many great songs from them, but this is a good a place to start as any: czcams.com/video/BLcQyhjqVGs/video.htmlsi=-BFc_b0NH_9OzVsH

Comment 1 today! My lucky day? Heaven or Las Vegas? You had such terrible moments listening to that song, yeah? :) "Just for a change", perfection. May you have a great 2024, Nick.

Great song and title as it can go both ways depending on your perspective or experience of Las Vegas. I like the fact that it is open to interpretation that way. Is it:
    Heaven or "Hell" ?
Dreamy & then guitars bringing in a sway of disturbing surreal trauma.
    (I've never really partied there.)
I've always gone with that wall you describe. Looking more closely at the lyrics it seems it is about a relationship that pains her yet she seems most hopeful in the end. There is a definite yearning vibe though out in my opinion.

@@byteme007No the contrary. I hear where some of SPs stuff like Stellar and In My Body could be taken from this. Clearly generalizing….just the feeling I got listening to it.
