Helping Recovery of a Gambian Pouched Rat with Torpor!
Broadwaters Archives is a new mini series of recovered clips from one of our breeders "Broadwaters Rattery". Broadwaters were breeders of Gambian and Emins Pouched Rats back in 2009 and these clips are from that era.
In this clip, Jambo, one of their males, was suffering from torpor after a particuarly cold spell of weather hit that part of the country. He is given warm water, and warm honey to slowly awaken him.
Torpor can be a dangerious problem, seen in many animals, not just Pouched Rats who are not designed to hibernate, but their bodies begin to slow and shutdown when they experience low temperatures.
The good news is Jambo made a full recovery, thanks to the quick actions by his owners!

Not sure of the entire history but a drop in temperature can cause this. We have to be vigilant around this time of year.
