I think the side judge thought that the ball was tipped on by #6, which would have put her offside. Center ref should have consulted with him and if that was the reason, he should have waved off the offside since he could have seen that she didn't touch the ball.
@@4000iq That is not how offside works. #9 plays the ball, the moment the freeze-frame happens at 1:36. That is when offside is determined, and at that moment #6 is definitely on, and #17 appears even. I am willing to admit that we don't have a perfect angle there, so #17 may have been slightly off. The ball goes straight through from #9 to #17, who puts a slight touch on it to beat the keeper. #6 attempted to touch the ball to flick it on, but made no contact and therefore did not "reset" the offside determination. My contention is that the linesman appeared to be ball-watching instead of watching the offside line (not seen in the video but I was at the game) and seemed to react to #6 as if she touched the ball, which would have put #17 in an obvious offside position. Haley (#17) didn't really argue the call, so perhaps she thought she was offside too. It was a very close call, I don't blame the linesman if he did get it wrong because it's not like they have the benefit of VAR. But your interpretation that since #6 (an onside player) somehow affected the play therefore making #17 offside is just not correct, she would have had to actually play the ball (make contact) to reset the offside determination. On the other hand, if #17 was offside when #9 played the original ball (again, I am willing to admit this was too close to call from our angle), then even had #17 whiffed on the shot and it rolled into the goal completely from #9's pass then there is a case that the offside player affected the outcome and to call her offside. Sorry to get long-winded, I just like to get down in the weeds sometimes to discuss technical aspects of the rules!
