This Cold War era film - originally titled as "Defense Against Enemy Propaganda" - is an episode of the U.S. Army's "The Big Picture" television series. It was released in circa 1957.
This film examines enemy propaganda and its danger to American way of life. It is an absorbing film presentation set in an exhibit room containing examples of media such as pamphlets, posters, broadcasts, and photographs, which were used by the enemy (primarily by the Soviet Union) to disseminate propaganda. A member of the Office of Special Warfare, whose job it is to recognize propaganda, describe its purpose, and discuss the methods of dissemination that may be utilized, narrates this film as stock footage and original shots of enemy propaganda are shown. The film concludes with the lesson that the best defense against enemy propaganda is the ability to recognize it for what it really is - lies and distortion with little or no basis in fact.
    HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Propaganda is information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is presented. Propaganda is often associated with material prepared by governments, but activist groups, companies and the media can also produce propaganda.
In the twentieth century, the term propaganda has been associated with a manipulative approach, but propaganda historically was a neutral descriptive term. A wide range of materials and media are used for conveying propaganda messages, which changed as new technologies were invented, including paintings, cartoons, posters, pamphlets, films, radio shows, TV shows, and websites.
The West and the Soviet Union both used propaganda extensively during the Cold War. Both sides used film, television, and radio programming to influence their own citizens, each other, and Third World nations. The United States Information Agency operated the Voice of America as an official government station. Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, which were, in part, supported by the Central Intelligence Agency, provided grey propaganda in news and entertainment programs to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union respectively. The Soviet Union's official government station, Radio Moscow, broadcast white propaganda, while Radio Peace and Freedom broadcast grey propaganda. Both sides also broadcast black propaganda programs in periods of special crises.
(Black propaganda is false information and material that purports to be from a source on one side of a conflict, but is actually from the opposing side. It is typically used to vilify, embarrass, or misrepresent the enemy. Black propaganda contrasts with grey propaganda, the source of which is not identified, and white propaganda, in which the real source is declared and usually more accurate information is given, albeit slanted, distorted and omissive. Black propaganda is covert in nature in that its aims, identity, significance, and sources are hidden.)
When describing life in capitalist countries, in the US in particular, propaganda focused on social issues such as poverty and anti-union action by the government. Workers in capitalist countries were portrayed as "ideologically close". Propaganda claimed rich people from the US derived their income from weapons manufacturing, and claimed that there was substantial racism or neo-fascism in the US.
When describing life in Communist countries, western propaganda sought to depict an image of a citizenry held captive by governments that brainwash them. The West also created a fear of the East, by depicting an aggressive Soviet Union.
George Orwell's novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are virtual textbooks on the use of propaganda. Though not set in the Soviet Union, these books are about totalitarian regimes that constantly corrupt language for political purposes. These novels were, ironically, used for explicit propaganda. The CIA, for example, secretly commissioned an animated film adaptation of Animal Farm in the 1950s with small changes to the original story to suit its own needs.

My comment was to say that "learning" ways to detect this isn't of much purpose and this content was likely meant to be shown the same as art would be. For entertainement.
On the matter of entertainement, most geopolitical content that can easely bé found will be entertainement
The first reason is that it wouldn't be easely accessible if it were 100% true.
The second is, that if the content were true, it means that you having knowledge of it doesn't have any importance.
I'm pretty sure you also know that nowadays the populations have very little influence on the state of things.
Even historically changes weren't often initiated by the lower population but often by somewhat influencial intellectuals.
So all of this is just a distraction, like most of the content that isn't educational on this platform.

    How to recognize propaganda:
    1) When given a problem, fear rather than reason is used to present the solution.
    2) When you're pressured into accepting the solution.
    3) When you're not allowed to question the solution.
    4) When the solution involves surrendering your freedoms.
    5) When your eyes see one thing, but you are compelled to believe a different thing.
    6) When the solution means giving small groups of people control over larger and larger things.
    7) When dissenters are censored for refusing to accept the solution.
    8) When dissenters are targeted by accusations from different sources, suddenly and all at once.

I have work in propaganda since i was six years old and now i´m 18 years old The most easy way to recognize propaganda is to see if there are many elements in a movie in a book in a video in a speech that support one final conclusion for example this is communist propaganda made by me:
The people who doesn´t want to only live for money could be represented only by anti imperialist and anticapitalist government for comunism in this age represents heroism against tops elites aristocrats this is the age of the final revolution the age of the truth the age of honor
if you read this you understand what you see if there are many elements in a text who support one final conclusion is propaganda

Speaking in absolutes and not leaving room for compromise but only for confrontation, talking down to and about THEM while at the same time verbally elevating themselves above the supposed enemy.

Means you need to accept that propaganda is on both sides, and like now saying "Putin is my hero, because Biden is senile" is just falling from one propaganda bubble into the another.

It was a fascinating thing to study, but even more fascinating was that after spending the time doing it I found it easier and easier to spot the techniques employed outside the stuff I was reading - the way in which articles or speeches can imply without stating directly, the ways in which the hearer/reader can be led to conclusions unsupported by anything but the repetition of ideas, the ways in which emotional appeal can be made to overrule actual facts. It's as though exposure to a lot of something known to be manipulative makes one ultra-aware of the same techniques that surround us in everyday life. Fascinating and useful. The communist propaganda magazines at 3:30 are quite fascinating, I own some, and while definitely being propaganda, they give some very interesting insight into the views and the culture inside the soviet union. Propaganda can give very good insight into what an ideology represents. It shows where the values of a country live. Even in Nazi magazines, there was a focus on social aspects. They commercialized how they gave workers the possibility to spend holidays at the sea. How they invested into social housing projects, and made the 'german' people more fit and healthy. What they said wasn't a lie. All these things did change, maybe even for the better. Every country has it's achievements and failures.
However with victors, we only see the achievements. And with the vanquished, we only see the failures. It's incomprehensibly hard to get an outsider view of an insider perspective. So never be too sure about what is right and wrong.

It is terrifying. So much of the media (even "mainstream" ones) have abandoned their objective role and become mostly mouthpieces for political activism. It's VERY rarely "just the facts", the commentary is almost always biased to twist it one way or another (left or right). Entirely unprofessional and extremely dangerous as well. And we wonder why this country's in so much of a mess. Corrupt journalism is one of the big reasons why.

@@haroldsmith3607 Perhaps, but many more suffer from the Corrupt News Network (CNN) and the channel Mostly Spewing Nothing But Crap (MSNBC). Watching either of those channels will feed you twisted versions of truth or straight up mislead. I just can't believe the maturity difference when I compare 1980s news reports to the absolute garbage we mostly have gotten in the last 10-20 years.
