This Cold War era film - originally titled as "Defense Against Enemy Propaganda" - is an episode of the U.S. Army's "The Big Picture" television series. It was released in circa 1957.
This film examines enemy propaganda and its danger to American way of life. It is an absorbing film presentation set in an exhibit room containing examples of media such as pamphlets, posters, broadcasts, and photographs, which were used by the enemy (primarily by the Soviet Union) to disseminate propaganda. A member of the Office of Special Warfare, whose job it is to recognize propaganda, describe its purpose, and discuss the methods of dissemination that may be utilized, narrates this film as stock footage and original shots of enemy propaganda are shown. The film concludes with the lesson that the best defense against enemy propaganda is the ability to recognize it for what it really is - lies and distortion with little or no basis in fact.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Propaganda is information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is presented. Propaganda is often associated with material prepared by governments, but activist groups, companies and the media can also produce propaganda.
In the twentieth century, the term propaganda has been associated with a manipulative approach, but propaganda historically was a neutral descriptive term. A wide range of materials and media are used for conveying propaganda messages, which changed as new technologies were invented, including paintings, cartoons, posters, pamphlets, films, radio shows, TV shows, and websites.
The West and the Soviet Union both used propaganda extensively during the Cold War. Both sides used film, television, and radio programming to influence their own citizens, each other, and Third World nations. The United States Information Agency operated the Voice of America as an official government station. Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, which were, in part, supported by the Central Intelligence Agency, provided grey propaganda in news and entertainment programs to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union respectively. The Soviet Union's official government station, Radio Moscow, broadcast white propaganda, while Radio Peace and Freedom broadcast grey propaganda. Both sides also broadcast black propaganda programs in periods of special crises.
(Black propaganda is false information and material that purports to be from a source on one side of a conflict, but is actually from the opposing side. It is typically used to vilify, embarrass, or misrepresent the enemy. Black propaganda contrasts with grey propaganda, the source of which is not identified, and white propaganda, in which the real source is declared and usually more accurate information is given, albeit slanted, distorted and omissive. Black propaganda is covert in nature in that its aims, identity, significance, and sources are hidden.)
When describing life in capitalist countries, in the US in particular, propaganda focused on social issues such as poverty and anti-union action by the government. Workers in capitalist countries were portrayed as "ideologically close". Propaganda claimed rich people from the US derived their income from weapons manufacturing, and claimed that there was substantial racism or neo-fascism in the US.
When describing life in Communist countries, western propaganda sought to depict an image of a citizenry held captive by governments that brainwash them. The West also created a fear of the East, by depicting an aggressive Soviet Union.
George Orwell's novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are virtual textbooks on the use of propaganda. Though not set in the Soviet Union, these books are about totalitarian regimes that constantly corrupt language for political purposes. These novels were, ironically, used for explicit propaganda. The CIA, for example, secretly commissioned an animated film adaptation of Animal Farm in the 1950s with small changes to the original story to suit its own needs.

Imagine if one’s own government were to do this to its citizens 80 years later. Imagine.
Trumps coup to overthrow American Democracy was to install a Fascist regime, not a Communist one.
It's what the liberals call "progress" 🤪
80 years later? Americans are being heavily brainwashed since 1945, Europeans - since forever.
80 years later? It's been happening this entire time since mass propaganda became popular in the late 19th century and 20th century.
Wdym 80 years later? It was going on all the time.
This is brilliant. Not only does it analyze foreign propaganda, it also is propaganda itself, allowing you to learn to detect both forms
Which has no benefit, watching this is mostly to enjoy watching historical content.
@@Victor-ze3sd I agree it's not the same today, but the manipulation of people is the same, it just doesn't come from the government anymore.

My comment was to say that "learning" ways to detect this isn't of much purpose and this content was likely meant to be shown the same as art would be. For entertainement.
On the matter of entertainement, most geopolitical content that can easely bé found will be entertainement
The first reason is that it wouldn't be easely accessible if it were 100% true.
The second is, that if the content were true, it means that you having knowledge of it doesn't have any importance.
I'm pretty sure you also know that nowadays the populations have very little influence on the state of things.
Even historically changes weren't often initiated by the lower population but often by somewhat influencial intellectuals.
So all of this is just a distraction, like most of the content that isn't educational on this platform.

How to recognize propaganda:
1) When given a problem, fear rather than reason is used to present the solution.
2) When you're pressured into accepting the solution.
3) When you're not allowed to question the solution.
4) When the solution involves surrendering your freedoms.
5) When your eyes see one thing, but you are compelled to believe a different thing.
6) When the solution means giving small groups of people control over larger and larger things.
7) When dissenters are censored for refusing to accept the solution.
8) When dissenters are targeted by accusations from different sources, suddenly and all at once.
saving that one, thank you
But the solution is free and you even get a free donut with it. Why hesitate?
Oh yeah, incidentally all 8 points you describe apply to what the so called West has done since the start of the Ukraine war 🤐

@@what2521 It depends on which donut we are talking about.
i can't get enough of how it is literally both how to spot propaganda and propaganda itself
I have work in propaganda since i was six years old and now i´m 18 years old The most easy way to recognize propaganda is to see if there are many elements in a movie in a book in a video in a speech that support one final conclusion for example this is communist propaganda made by me:
The people who doesn´t want to only live for money could be represented only by anti imperialist and anticapitalist government for comunism in this age represents heroism against tops elites aristocrats this is the age of the final revolution the age of the truth the age of honor
if you read this you understand what you see if there are many elements in a text who support one final conclusion is propaganda
Its not propaganda really though. Just because its for a government doesn't make it propaganda, if that were true spiderman would be propaganda. Obviously it aint. Propaganda is when its overly political, subjectively and objectively. The true irony is how Hollywood today makes 3 outta 10 films with subtle leftist transhumanism communistcapitalist propaganda
FR, this video is literal propaganda itself against state-capitalism
every message should be met with the question: (1) what do they want me to feel (2) what do they want me to do (3) who gains by me feeling this or doing this.
Yep. Well said curt. We should all teach what you said to our children. 👍
who gained by making the original video? very important question indeed
Excellent questions!
Someone paid money to produce this message. Why? What is the purpose of this communication? What emotion does that particular word choice trigger? We as consumers of advertising and 'news' are never taught to examine the message itself, but are given the content to digest whole. This is a grave error. Propaganda is a whip for our backs disguised as a treat.
@@thegtafanboy underrated comment
"Remember: don't fall for the enemy propaganda. Fall for our propaganda instead!"
Good one!
Exactly 😂
Just join the Army and murder for money and then say it's for Freedom.
It's part of the propaganda to claim that every side used propaganda which is not absolute true it's a falsehood that both sides do all use propaganda. The one who has more to lose the the propagandists.
US has the very best prop at #1. N Korea is a distant 2nd . . .
I love how an "educational film" is just the opponent's propaganda - establishing a narrative of "It's them or us!" and "THEY are everywhere already!" and giving it quick dramatical climaxes. Speaking in absolutes and not leaving room for compromise but only for confrontation, talking down to and about THEM while at the same time verbally elevating themselves above the supposed enemy.
"And it's up to him to work harder to catch up" hmm, that one sounds oddly familiar
If you understood the video you were capable to recognize that there was a reason for that video too :)) but the truth is still in the words - you can't condemn our side of propaganda, and pretend the other side is going to tell you the"truth" instead. Means you need to accept that propaganda is on both sides, and like now saying "Putin is my hero, because Biden is senile" is just falling from one propaganda bubble into the another.

"We go from being laughed at, to being shot in just a few easy steps." is terrifying because it's true
Yes, if you entirely ignore any kind of context. European communists were laughing at them because they weren't fighting them. Americans are uncultured, and in the 50's they were very much less educated than Europeans, especially American soldiers. Whereas in Korea the Americans were literally in a war with them. And the Americans and their allies did indeed massacre whole villages. So comparing British students opinions of Americans and Korean soldiers opinions of Americans is a ridiculous thing to do.

The communist propaganda magazines at 3:30 are quite fascinating, I own some, and while definitely being propaganda, they give some very interesting insight into the views and the culture inside the soviet union. Propaganda can give very good insight into what an ideology represents. It shows where the values of a country live. Even in Nazi magazines, there was a focus on social aspects. They commercialized how they gave workers the possibility to spend holidays at the sea. How they invested into social housing projects, and made the 'german' people more fit and healthy. What they said wasn't a lie. All these things did change, maybe even for the better. Every country has it's achievements and failures.
However with victors, we only see the achievements. And with the vanquished, we only see the failures. It's incomprehensibly hard to get an outsider view of an insider perspective. So never be too sure about what is right and wrong.
That idealized picture your Nazi magazine gave was for a selected and limited part of the population. But NOT for the vast majority, who ended up working long thankless hours to build for war, to build concentration camps, working year round to feed soldiers … they were working long, hard hours .. with little compensation.
Totally feels like the beginning of a Twilight Episode and now we're living it.

This needs to be modernized. Most of the tactics are still the same, but there are some key differences.
Yeah, meanwhile our own governments use these tactics against us and think we are stupid ...
I'm pretty sure they still teach people to recognize propaganda by being propagandized.
You are correct, but what are your suggestions? I think Yuri Bezmenov did update the warning a little but beyond that I don't know how the message could be any more clear without insulting the audience's intelligence. Maybe you thought about it some more and can think of some eloquent way of explaining it to people.
This doesn't need to be modernized as this is not meant for today's people. This was appropriate for the time in which this film was made, and we should keep it as it is as part of history. I believe the propaganda techniques used today are a lot more sophisticated and those are what people need to learn now. However people in this country and other Western countries will not get this current information because we are the ones now propagandized by our own countries. This is a terrible terrible shame.

I fear for the future because almost all countries in the world are authocracies. Some are more obvious and others are still veiled.
Only when the common people understand voting doesn’t make a country a democracy and that we are ruled by plutocrats and demagogues (or stratocrats and kleptocrats in some countries), we will have peace and improve as a species .

Propaganda is everywhere. Think of a product you’d like to sell. It’s not really good for the public but you can make a beautiful buck by selling it. So you advertise it as necessary to a happy life and it will make your life easier. Propaganda caused you buy a product you don’t need and won’t make you happy. But because the manufacturer says it will make you happy you believe it and are convinced you’re happy. Something deep inside feels off and you can’t put your finger on it. It’s your misery. But you don’t think so because someone told you that product will make you happy.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Boundaries shift, new players step in. Power always finds a place to rest its head. Yesterdays enemies are todays new recruits.
Or rather, it was a prophecy as they knew if Americans stop acting American, America dies. And that is what happened.
"where there is despair, people may listen to anyone, to any plan that promises a change"
When a man can be convinced to believe absurdities he can be convinced to commit atrocities. This is why conspiracy theorists should never be dismissed as just crazy people, they are dangerous people.
Hence the use of grievance politics to elect a man whose only character traits are Greed, Pride, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth as president. A man that said, "I Alone Csn Fix It", after painting a bleak picture of an America where everyone is against the white Christian.
He truly spoke as someone happy with the status quo.

Years ago, I was in the US military, stationed overseas. I heard constant stories from the *American* press, about how hated we were in our host country. I was puzzled, because it certainly didn't feel like they hated us! Then, one day, I was shopping downtown, and I saw a huge demonstration marching down the street toward me. I didn't know if they would become violent, and I did know that as a military member, I was not allowed to be in the middle of a foreign demonstration. So, I ducked into a nearby doorway. From that doorway, I could see many hundreds of marchers. As they got closer, I could read the signs and banners they were holding. Signs that said things like "We love the USA!" and "KEEP the US Bases!" and "The USA is our Friend!"
