Dave is still the King. No other show before or since does stuff like this. Conan and Kimmel are close, but Dave is the king.

To be fair, Conan’s show in the 90s was far more bizarre and twisted.

first there was Steve Allen and he was great, then there was Jonny Carson and he was great as well and that network got Jay Leno , he was no where near as good as the two before him. Dave Letterman got screwed for not being the one to replace Johnny! but he went to the other network and he was great.

@@cactaceous Obviously you never saw Conan’s show in the 90s. Yeah, in the last 15+ years most of what Conan did was remotes and live bits, like Dave did. It was the exact opposite early on, which was entirely by design.

In regards to the neighborhood people & mayor getting freaked out about the fireworks exploding. It reminded me of the time they were filming a scene from the first X-Men movie in my neighborhood. 2 days before, the production company sent 1,000+ letters to mail boxes in our neighborhood warning us about "sounds of loud explosions" that would happen 2 or 3 times that day & "please don't call 911". I still have the letter !

I didn’t see the firework bit because I had stopped watching letterman before than(it was me not you), but yeah those fireworks had my jaw dropped because it was bad taste for sure. Love the Letterman show and stoked to watch all the things I missed because either being too young, or while I got a little older and didn’t watch every night. But watching the fireworks burn down the front of the building before going into the normal aerial fireworks shook my mind, couldn’t imagine what local New Yorkers thought of that
