The Golden Age of Nickelodeon. And arguably one of the best intros on television across genre
Yup
Absolutely!!
It's coming back their bringing it back
Hands down! FACTS!
we have to admit, the opening scares more than any tale of each episode.
No joke, Tale of Deadman's float terrified me so much I stayed away from pools for like 6 months.
The Fan Without a Face no joke I didn't get in a pool until I became an adult.even now when I get in the pool if I even remotely think of that demon I get out right away!
you too????
The first time I watched that episode I peed and crapped my pants.
What's ironic is that the tale universally declared the scariest episode of AYAOTD was disliked by the Midnight Society.
sAME
No im not scared of the dark, im scared what is in the Dark
I understood that reference ;) ... I love that movie sooo much
racism....
we have to admit, the opening scares more than any tale of ecah episode.
Exactly
@@swarupchakraborty6291 tell me you're joking
I want a tattoo of a campfire with the words “Summited for the approval of the Midnight Society.” I love writing, and this show inspired to get started as a kid.

Well get it then
Just be careful where you get it placed lol 😂
"The Lonely Ghost" always makes me cry. That poor girl and her mother.
I agree 100%. That tale was Nightmare Fuel, Tear Jerker and Heartwarming all in one. At least they're reunited in the end and live happily with each other in the altered past and in the afterlife.
The kid in the woods aways saying I'm cold was messed up too.
God I loved watching this show growing up...... The 90´s were such a great time to be a kid!
Truth
You got that right the 90s were the best times being a child
The one with the brother who died in a car crash n don't know he died and his gf keeps calling for him..that was a awesome one
Eric jae that one was a good one and pinball game one
M Night Shyamalan stole the idea and made that the big twist in the movie The Sixth Sense and for years never gave the writes of the show any credit.
Yea that's also a sad episode
@@oisinosborne2852 really? M Night Shyamalan stole more from Nickelodeon than thought! Cough..avatar..crashed and burnt it.
Daniel Macias that one made me cry! 😭

My fave episode
Give it back IF YOU DON'T GIVE IT BACK I WILL COME AND GET IT 😂😂
Best show ever! I miss those days when kid shows actually had balls.
Amen to that! 😀
While I agree that AYAotD took some serious risks, today's kid shows aren't half bad. I remember the first time someone showed me Gravity Falls, and told me it was on DISNEY CHANNEL, and I was like, "...since when does Disney Channel scare the shit outta kids?" And Over the Garden Wall is one of the scariest, trippiest things I've ever seen; I was amazed to find out it was actually aimed at kids, not adults.
Nicole San to the chez and it wasn’t offending
Nicole San to the chez I know right
R.L. Stine made another show (I forgot the name) but that one was made in 2015 & it was aimed at kids & it was scary as shit
"The Nightshift" should've made it! With the metal fanged vampire in the hospital. That one used to scare me so much! Loved it. Lol
Me too I was thinking about that one I'll never forget that red eyed vampire the one with babysitter who tells him a story that comes true is,super scary too
That one scared me the most
I'm surprised "The Tale of Apartment 214" wasn't higher up on this list than just "honorable mention". That one really got to me. Not in a scary way, but in an emotional way.
How old were you when you realized that Tucker is Jason from Mean Girls? I was today years old.
Really? I never noticed that. You are right. How cool?
Sam was Cheyenne on Reba.
And Kristen was Roxanne on 7th Heaven and Cher on Clueless the TV series.
Tucker is also Carlos from The Magic School Bus
I am an adult and the pool episode still scares me hahaha
Raina Mermaid yeah, that spaghetti looking ghost.
Me too
the one about the mute girl was more sad than scary
The Tale of the Lonely Ghost. One of my favorite episodes.
I liked the episode “Tale of the Phantom Cab”.
Was the very first episode, and was about two brothers and the youngest was good at riddles. Very cool and dark episode.
Phantom cab is the best it wasent on the list
a hole in a barrel....
Yup, I agree. I was waiting for them to mention that episode, and yet no mention of it. It was the same thing when I watched the Top 10 Tales from the Crypt episodes, and there was no mention of the taxidermy episode, or the episode with the cartoonist. Seriously, wtf?!!!
This show was awesome! It was a huge part of my childhood and helped me realize how much i loved horror movies and anything horror based.
You know it’s scary when Nickelodeon have it the dreaded “Y7” distinction
I STILL think about "The Tale of the 13th Floor" every once in a while, that one effed me up as a kid.
same lol
That was the best one!
Yup! The doll maker episode did too.
It had that great spooky feeling to it..13th floor stuck with me as well
The doll house one made me cry at night and prevented me from getting adequate sleep for weeks!
The Tale of Apartment 214 scared the crap outta me!
Yes!!!! At first I was tryna figure out what it was even scary but it totally went ther
Same!
Just saw that episode and it was very good omg
What was that one about?
The best episode for me was "The tale of the Old Corcoran". That was scary AF.
Someone NEEDS to bring this show back.
Charlene Alyssa Ingram they would just screw it up
Olynicole1234 This is Nickelodeon your talking about. Look how successful there reboots are with the films, and double dare.
Relax, there's a movie adaptation due out October of next year.
mst3KGf Wait What?
TwilightLink77 - Yep! :) ew.com/movies/2017/12/06/are-you-afraid-of-the-dark-movie-release-date/
The Tale Of the Quiet Librarian, The Tale Of The Hungry Hounds, The Tale Of The Captured Souls, The Tale Of The Phantom Cab, The Tale Of The Pinball Wizard, The Tale Of The Super Specs are all ones i remember very well
david gold the captured souls, super specs, and pinball wizard were awesome. The 1st one was intriguing to me and the other two were great cuz they didn’t have a happy ending 😬
HUNGRY HOUNDS! YES.
The Pinball Wizard was one of my favorites as a kid.
david gold isnt pinball wizard a pre existing song?
@@RajaReign78 how to tap into our minds I loved it still do..Dont forget the chameleon episode didnt have a happy ending either
The tale of the ghastly grinner: "It may not sound like that, but this one falls into the category of indescribably scary for the kids who saw it." OMG so true. This one was easily the scariest (along with the midnight madness), no question
I will always remember the "Tale of the Quicksilver" - it had a lasting effect on me even to this day decades later. The message of that episode was follow directions carefully - as the main character realized that he was using a stainless steel spoon when the ritual called for silver. An honest mistake that his brother paid for with his life. Probably why I am a software engineer now due to my obsession with following instructions. Will always love being a 90s kid.
Yeah we were very lucky.
Haven't even watched the list yet, but my older sister and I (we're in our 30s) still joke around with each other and say "I'm......cold...." from the one where that boy died of hypothermia in the woods wearing a red hoodie or something like that. Now that I think of it, that show is kind of messed up...
YES! I can remember his voice perfectly, even after all these years.
Me too! That's the only episode I remember, it should have been on here for sure.
Me and my brother used to say that all the time! Lol
HAHA yes
lol thats hilarious
I remember watching this on Nickelodeon. Very scary. 😱
A.J Thomas so have I, this should've been reran until December 2005.
I never knew it was from Canada
Same here, every Saturday night at 8pm EST
greenrobot5 neither have I.
Brady Anderson I watched Are you afraid of the dark on CZcams dut I'm 11 Never seen it all Nickelodeon because I'm not even born yet Than Back in the Day
"I'm Cold" will be stuck in my head forever! About the little boy who drowned and just wanted his bike back? Anyone remember that one? Man, did this show scare the crap out of me
I can hear that kid keep saying "I am cold" over and over.
The tale of the shiny red bicycle.....about the kid who drowns in the dam and comes back as a ghost to warm his friend about his brothers future death??? If that's the one your talking about then that episode scared the living shit out of me......I guess it's cause the episode started with a legit death and the way they made the ghost look was so creepy
You’re talking about two episodes, the first was the tale of the frozen ghost. Such a good one!
Tale of the frozen ghost.
I say it like that when I'm cold
IM COLD IM COLD

The SNICK line-up of AYAOTD and Ren & Stimpy was the effing best.
Rocko's modern life,Hey dude...ahhh the good times
THE GHASTLY GRINNER GAVE MY KIDSELF NIGHTMARES FOR YEARS BACK THEN XD
JaxBlade that makes two of use. It took me a while to get over it, but I don’t think I ever watched that episode again
Hi Jax
You not lying the name ghastly grinner had me nervous as hell and when you're man neck flip back on me TV went off immediately
JaxBlade yeah that one is pretty wierd looking I wonder what that blue stuff is lol
I will never unsee the serial port embedded in the kid's hand in the VR virus episode.
When it came to Goosebumps and Are you afraid of the dark I loved Are you afraid of the dark more .
Likewise. AYAOTD was so much scarier and gutsier.
Mutant X
I liked the Goosebumps tv show. But I love Are You Afraid of the Dark more.
Now when it comes to Goosebumps tv show and Goosebumps movie and books, I love the movie and books more.
TERROR ON TERROR TOWER on Goosebumps was a really good one!!! but other than that! Are You Afraid Of The Dark beat it every time!!!!!!!
NEWSFLASH! It was the 90's.
Adamguy2003 slappy was the best though. But I agree
The Frozen Ghost was scary too. “I’m cold.” 😱
The tale of laughing in the dark was the scariest episode imo. Especially when the clown chases the kid through his house. Although dead man's float did make me a little tense everytime I jumped in a pool when I was younger.
Definitely scariest episode.
The part where the kid returned Zeebo's nose and entered the Laughing In The Dark funhouse alone at night knowing damn well at that point that it wasn't just a goofy carnival act but really was haunted by a clown was the scariest part - imagine going through a horror funhouse alone at night!
Zeebo the clown stole a huge amount of money from the Circus so he hides into the ol' fun house but there's a snag zeebo used to smoke cigars so that's why josh keeps on smelling zeebos cigarettes
You never know what lurks in the dark
Justin Y. Getting here early for them likes eh?
Unless you turn on the light.

This show traumatized me as a kid! I was scared of everything!
"The Tale of the Dream Girl" is an AWESOME episode! I remember the acting being quite good and the story pretty strong. Not so much scary but the twist at the end made this 10 year old (back then) get emotional. This was before the "Sixth Sense".
Dead Man's float scared me so much as a kid that I ran out of the room screaming. It traumatized me for years. I couldn't get that images out of my head.
I couldn’t take a shower for a week cuz I was terrified of the damn shower drain 😂😂 it was truly terrifying
What? no Tale of the Pinball Wizard?
Tony Kirk
Yeah! And what about “The Tale of Jack and the Leprechaun”? That’s a very good story.
@MadelineTopper ummm cuz the kid is stuck in the pinball machine forever??? one of the few dark endings
@@AaronBowley It does have the advantage of having one one of the few dark endings. What killed it for many of us is that we loved idea of video games being acknowledged in a mainstream show. But instead they made the arcade machine a pinball game, and the video game references felt uninvolved.
Thank you! Or Bookish Babysitter
@MadelineTopper The kid got trapped inside a pinball game for ever that's pretty scary
"The Tale of the Quicksilver" scared me more than anything as a kid.
SongmakersCry this was definitely the scariest episode.
I kept a spoon by my bed for WEEKS after that episode lmao
It scarred me as well I had to change the channel and find something else to watch.
I still can't get that image of that creature out of my head.
Fuck yess!!!
Used to watch this show as a kid, some of those episodes scared the shit outta me! Made Goosebumps look like a box of kittens
Straight facts. Ayatod was so much better written and acted. I'm a grown ass man who doesn't scare easily and still to this day those episodes scare the crap out of me.
Goosebumps was no where near what Ayatod was.
"The Tale of the Lonely Ghost" scared the hell out of me when I was a kid!!
THE TALE OF THE CRIMSON CLOWN would be on the list.
The clown one had me scared for years!!
Same here. One of my top favorites from that series.
1. There are 2 clown episodes.
2. Zeebo scared the daylights outta me too.
@Diocletian yes that's right.
Naw crimson clown got me
same and I had the bad luck of having an aunt who had a clown doll on top a bookshelf
Still love this show after all these years. Heard they are rebooting this on Nickelodeon to premiere in October.
Also apparently the guy who played Gary, Ross Hull is now a meteorologist.
I would say the best episode was easily The Tale of the Shiny Red Bicycle. It was dark, sad and actually really scary. It also had some of the best acting on the entire show.
Why is it that " THE GHASTLY GRINNER " is more terrifying then Pennywise or The Joker ??
The ghastly grinner causes people to lose their mental health and become him so to speak. Which I think is even scarier than being victimized by Pennywise or the Joker
You could probably say he was the more "kid friendly" version of Pennywise for the show.
That, or you could say it's more scary cause he hounds you till you go crazy and doesn't kill you.
Lol
I don't think he is.
Even as a kid, I found that episode more funny than scary.
I LOVED this show! Bring it back! Everyone who watched Nick, CN, Disney, WB knows good cartoons and shows period. They need a network with everything we miss on there. Highest rated network mark my words !
Hands Down
1 The Tale Of Quick Silver
2 The Tale Of The Dream Girl, While not being the Scariest it can leave you Happy Empty Sulking and Edgey
Amazing. I remember seeing a few episodes of this from my childhood in Sweden, made some kind of impression. Thanks for this cool breakdown
Anything to do with creepy dolls freaks me tf out
Clowns creep me out even more, but dolls definitely do it at times!!

No Mister, Accent on the 'Do'
Sardo!
You're going to do a top 10 list of this show and not even mention the prom queen ghost episode. Wow! 🙀
Ikr that one was probulary the best
I love Are You Afraid of the Dark?!
Man, I loved this show growing up. I recently discovered that it was made by a Canadian production company, much to my surprise,as I'd always presumed that the show was made in America! My favourite tale would have to be either "Train Magic" or "Dollmaker", as they capture just the right amount of creepiness!
interesting that you mention that. I discovered that most of the shows aimed at kids that I enjoyed the most, came out of Canada. starting with 'you can't do that on television' all the way up to 'fifteen'. apparently they've been ahead of the curve when it comes to compelling television aimed at a younger audience that doesn't condescend or talk down to them.
Watching it now, there are certain episodes where you can hear a random "aboot" or something similar. It was filmed in and around Montreal.
I think that made it ahead of its time. One thing I notice about the show now is that they had numerous episodes with interracial couples and they never made any deal about it. They just portrayed it as normal, which was very refreshing.
A lot of shows and movies were primarily filmed in Canada. The exchange rate was great back in the 90's, and the Canadian government gave film makers a sweetheart tax deal if they used enough Canadian workers to make the films.
Degrassi as well
My favorite one was not included - The Tale of the Twisted Claw
Always one of my favorites. Surprisingly, the only one that ever scared me was the chameleon episode. I made my mom make a sign for my bedroom door that says, No Chameleons Allowed!!! I still have it. The Lonely Ghost and the one about the boy who froze were my faves.
i still have ptsd about Nosferatu in Midnight madness.
IKR!!! That shit terrified me
Tell me about it. My mom had me watch Salem's Lot in elementary school, then Snick airs this shit. You have my condolences, friend.
If that episode with him have you ptsd, then I don’t recommend you seeing that one episode of SpongeBob that had him in it near the end.
Dude that shit has stuck with me for life
Jennifer Poole who’s flickering the lights
Bite you once, bite you twice. A little water and pay the price!
Angie Alzalde That should have been an honourable mention. Never looked at Chameleons the same way after that episode.
Never looked at chameleons the same way either... and when I saw it years afterwards I realized those were Tia and Tamera.
What I hated about that episode was how the lizard wasn't even a Chameleon. It was a IGUANA!
How the hell was that not on the list? That one still scares me.
That was my pick for #1! That one freaked me out as a kid.
My favorite episode was "The Tale of Station 109.1." Gilbert Gottfried was amazing in that episode, namely between the different voices he used at times for the same character in the episode and that monologue towards the end of the episode, where he explains that the afterlife is good if you've lived a good life (when this decent person goes into the hereafter upon his passing, compared to the indecent person earlier on who more or less experienced hell upon death).
Dr. Vink wasn't the only reoccurring character, remember Sardó
I remember both.
Others: Mr Vink
Vink: that's doctor Vink. And I am not a nut bag
Others: Mr Sardo
Sardo: That's SarDO. No mister and accent on the DO.

@@eliben4066 she played the women who gives the boys the claw in tales of the twisted claw from season 1
Ah, memories!
PurpleRanger Damn I Love The 90's!
I just remembered Ryan Gosling was in one of the honorable mentions if you read this look at the blond kid that says "that's my brother you freak."
Yep, that's Gosling yelling at Gilbert Gotfried (he appeared on "Goosebumps" around the same time as well). Apparently Gosling was offered the chance to be one of the Midnight Society regulars, but he decided to do "Mickey Mouse Club" instead.
I think that what made the show so f... good was not only the stories but also the great child and adult actors on it. Really good acting.
The Tail of the Watcher's Wood was a true story about 3 girls who were missing and murdered in 1977...

The Tale of the Curious Camera is the one that stood out for me.
Yes! The cliffhanger at the end was great
My three favorites are "The Tail of the Doll Maker", "The Tail of the Lonely Ghost", and one of the best that wasn't shown on this list was "The Tail of the Prom Queen" that was was creepy af😦
Doll maker wasnt scary at all, hide and seek in cemetary and frozen ghost and vampires were scary
The episode I remember is the vampire that lived in the basement of the hospital and turned everyone into zombies.
Tale of the Night Shift best one not even on the list

My favorite is Tale of The Dangerous Soup. The fact that the chef shows people what they're afraid of most in order to get the fear essence from them to make the soup, is terrifying.
I absolutely love this show -- I remember excitedly waiting for this every Friday night!
This is one of the shows that helped me develop my English very well .^_^.
My childhood right here I love all the episodes
This show is Canadian? Wow, had no idea. Just knew it from it being on Nickelodeon when were kids
Lord Maul yep Canadian goosebumps was also done in Canada too actually.
Yes, if you watch enough episodes of both series, you see they used a lot of the same actors. Ryan Gosling and Hayden Christensen appeared on both series.
Funny thing is, I guess the stereotype is true, on the episode of the tale of the final wish I always wondered as a kid why she pronounced the word "sorry" as "sore - ee". Always struck me odd lmao.
I remembered this series when I was young. It really makes me chilly every episode. Maybe If I watch this nowdays it wont be as I remembered.
The concept of the episode STATION 109.1 still makes me wonder in fear or joy. But still makes me wonder about death.

So Weird was my show! My favorite episode was the one about the Banshee
Yes!!! Those were my two faves
I loved Saturday's because of this show, SNICK was the best !
SNICK and TGIF lineup was great.
Loved tv back then!
I bought this entire series on Blu ray a couple months ago. Loved this show in the 90s. Watching it now makes me realize why i was scared of certain things when i was a kid. I don't think its an official release that i bought but it has every episode with great quality. Bought it on Ebay for $70.
I liked the Sleepy Hollow episode, the locket episode, and the jukebox episode.
The librarian one, where she steals your voice! Scary thing was, she looked like my dinner lady when I was a kid 👻
What's a dinner lady lol
"the Tale of the Quiet Librarian"
Loved that episode.
Haven't thought about this show in 20 years. The second I saw the whistle from the watcher's woods episode the nostalgia hit me like a tidal wave. This show, baby-sitters club on disney, and Pete & Pete were my childhood. The 90s were EVERYTHING.
Yo that vampire episode where the kid is trapped in the hospital and everyone turns into vampires scared the shit out of me back in be day😅
The Tale of the Dream Girl!
Roy that's one of my fav episodes
sad episode
It´s the best one, I´ve always said that M Night Shyamalan got the idea for Sixth Sense from that episode hahahaha
He admitted he did.
HOLY MOLY!!!
"The Tale of the Quicksilver" has always been one of my favorites.
As soon as I clicked on it I thought that Dead Mans Float should be number one. The storytelling, the aesthetics and the effects were so good it actually creeped me out which was hard to do (I've been a horror girl since basically birth)
I love how now that you're older, you can spot Canadian Actors that appeared in the show when they were younger. For example, the Tale of the 13th Floor stars a young Shawn Ashmore.
I need a R rated remake from this serie
Made by Stephen freaking King, HELL YES!!!!! I WOULD NEED THERAPY FOR THE REST OF MY EXISTENCE AND I DON'T EVEN CARE!!!!!
@@boogiebeat09 That'd be amazing
You could just watch Tales from the Crypt or Tales from the Dark Side for that.
I'd also like to add The Tale of the Chameleon. In addition to starring the Mowery sisters, it had one of the darkest endings in the show's history, and the only one where it was implied that the protagonist was dead.
That ending was jacked up and disturbing! What was the writer thinking...I mean high on? >:(
Stefan also the tale of the haunted jukebox the kid at the end is discovered to have been dead all along..superr dark
C7 and The Dream Girl, the latter of which was the inspiration for The Sixth Sense. I'd also add The Tale of Old Man Corcoran. Easily one of the scariest episodes (if nothing else due to the cemetery setting), and had a very dark/twist ending.
Stefan that one was so scary! I still remember it!
YO I REMEMBER THAT ONE AND DEADANS FLOAT THE MOST. That twist with the lizard man omg
watchmojo is probably one of the most creative channels...
Top 10 videos?! That's probably the most creative idea I've ever heard!
The originality of this type of content is astonishing, mind blowing!!
Just stellar.
This was my favourite show growing up and it still holds a special place in my heart. I can’t wait for the Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie next year. I hope they don’t mess it up.
Great list although The Tale Of The Closet Keepers and The Tale Of The Prom Queen should have been included
dead man's float! baby, I can still remember the night I saw that episode. Messed my head UP! lol 25 years later and it's the only episode that I could recite verbatim
Now...you guys are getting creative again!! Good Job!!
the tale of laughing in the dark is my favourite of all time
Scarier than IT.
I had an episode called Tale Of The Hatchet on a VHS tape for years, I watched it loads of times but I was hardly an avid viewer of the series.
Carl Rees Actually it’s called The Tale of the Hatching.
Oh wow.... I miss this show so much.
The funny thing is about this show is that it was made years before I was born and I still fell in love with it , it should come back but more scarier 🤤
Great video! I used to watch this religiously on SNICK. I bought the entire series for 20 bucks on what looks like some bootleg DVDs. Gotta love the fact that the same company that produced this serie produced the crow TV series. Both were set in Canada too.
