  • Part one, Building a Hollander. These machines were invented in the 17th Century to pulp up cotton and linen rags. The Hollander beater was originally designed to run off a windmill. I set up my camera in the corner of the workshop and filmed 2 seconds every 30 seconds and speeded it up 2000%.... makes me look very busy! This machine is off to the Green Banana Paper Company in Kosrae, Micronesia to process the fibre from Banana trunks.
    I am in Amberley, New Zealand. please enjoy the beautiful landscape and the abundance of plants for making paper.
    Watch for Part 2 ... Preparing Plants for Papermaking and Having fun with the Hollander.

    I don't know who you are, but I was searching for videos on how to dry handmade paper and you came up....I have to say, this is the first time I have ever been DISGUSTED with someone's level of talent. I don't even really know what you made here - but that fact that you made every single part of it 1) impressed my to no end and 2) triggered me to no end. I would LOVE to be this level of craftsperson some day - this is so right up my alley. Why buy something when you can just go round the back and make it. I just can't believe you made an entire machine from scratch - in awe. How did you learn this? Did you work in a factory where they made these all the time and that's how you know how to do all this metal work / smithing? What kind of education, work, or life experience gave you this knowledge?????????

      Hi Special Minis, Thank you so so much for your wonderful comment and encouragement! I trained in Fine Arts Painting.. Here in New Zealand we are quite isolated so you have to learn everything from books... Mostly it is learning from trial and error...to make my own Hollander I built 6 prototypes before I got one to work!
      This particular machine went to Kosrae in Micronesia..(.check out the awesome Green Banana Paper Company.) There are 7 videos in this series...I am working on Part 8 which is about bookbinding... it is worth learning new skills even if it takes years!

    I bet he also played all the musical instruments and recorded the tune for this video. There must be something in the water in those woods.

    Oh this is just what I've been wanting to know! I'm starting to plan a bike-pedal-powered Hollander, and seeing the structure of the interior parts is perfect for where things are at just now. Also love that you took time to decorate it and make a beautiful drawing / logo on it.

    are the bars on the beater made of aluminum?

    • @landergallery
      @landergallery  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi, the ones in the video are Stainless steel...bars are embedded in an aluminum block and then bent in a press, you can make an all aluminum beater... they work well for most pulps and will do cotton rag ok
