It's really weird happened to me today after getting the platinum with 60 hours of game play . Returnal is my favourite Ps5 game but i just deleted the game won't take any risks lol.
Just happened to me in the absolutely same way. First the sound go away for few seconds and then... Noooo... my run was ruined and my PS5 needed forced restart. The good thing is i was running the tower and was somewhere in the phase 2.
2 years later and this game still crashes the same way... one thing I noticed, and it might be a biased notion, is that it seems to crash when you collect obolites from enemies? I've had the game crash twice on me, first as I was swording one of the golden doggos that spawn, second just as my character was sucking in the obolites from a recently killed enemy, and I noticed in this crash you also are collecting money just as it crashes...
Super shot in the dark guess, the sound breaking is a red herring and they have a background thread that saves each event of your progress which breaks and gets killed at some point, the queue of events to save gets filled and the next event that is posted (i.e. collecting obolites) causes the main game logic to hang waiting for a space to open up in the queue which willl never happen. I guess this because the first time it happened, when I opened the game again I was back in the previous room with all items uncollected. The second time I decided I don't want to deal with this anymore so I uninstalled the game. It would make sense that the ps5 refuses to close the game afterwards as it is waiting for data to be saved, which will never happen as the game is stuck Or, it really is the sound system that breaks, in more or less the same way I described, next time it tries to post an event to play the ding sound from obolites, it gets stuck with a full queue. Then it is idiotic from sony to not have an equivalent of kill task in their system, instead locking you up in the closing app screen (you can't even return to the home screen) Either way I overanalyzed this for fun, after the second crash I decided it's not worth it anymore and moved on. Good thing I got returnal from ps plus, I'd be pissed off if I actually had spent money to specifically purchase it

Literally got the game today and it froze the whole ps5 in about forty mins in
they could not fix this for over a year already. this is frustrating ...

Bro is there a fix to solve that? :(
Same place today happend to me
same place means like a bug in the game. the game devs still claim, it's a bug in PS5 firmware ... lol
