  • For a while now, PC ports have launched with various issues to the point where the day one experience is often disappointing, if not downright broken. We've already seen promising signs of improvement in The Last of Us Part 1, but what about the rest of the triple-A titles we've got issues with? Patches have been forthcoming across the weeks and months for The Callisto Protocol, Forspoken, Returnal and the Dead Space Remake, so in this content, Alex revisits them all. Does the PC experience improve over time? Do games mature into solid experiences? As you may imagine, the reality is complicated.

      Pipeline State Objects didn't exist yet 10 years ago. I'm sure you saw stutters back then, but to see the hardware invariance reported with PSO stutters these days and link them as proof to something you've been shouting about 10+ years ago is disingenuous.
      Fwiw: traversal stutters have been a common issue ever since engines have started targeting open world games, which has gained traction pretty much since the UE3 era .. so maybe you were seeing those. That said, traversal stutters tend to be more amenable to hardware scaling .. especially in the era of emerging SSDs .. so if you were shouting about traversal stutter 10+ years ago, it may very well have been the case that some people legitimately didn't encounter them due to hardware setups.
      Of course this doesn't take anything away from DF having done a lot to hold the general gaming industry accountable from a graphics perspective.

      It's not. Most of the issues stem from development constrained or impacted by the pandemic. They're systemic issue that are buried deep in the early development of the games that the final push for optimization and even post-launch patches can't entirely fix. Performance in games will get better as the long term impact of development during the Pandemic lessens and we get further from that period in the industry.

    It's all pointing to an utterly failed transition to DX12. There's been no 'onboarding' for developers. They completely ignored or failed to see all the extra steps they had to take, now that certain automated aspects of DX11 no longer existed. This is shown by the TLOU PC port patch having better textures with lower VRAM utilization - steps were ignored that used to be automated in DX11. Every hitchy stuttery PC game in 2022 and beyond are victim to this. DX12 has been an absolute disaster. In the right hands it's good and has a higher technical ceiling, but it's not being taken advantage of whatsoever and that's a tragic failure on the API and the gamedevs' parts

    • @nou4605
      @nou4605 Před rokem +2

      I honestly wonder if it wasn't possible to solve DX11's bottleneck of relying on a single cpu core to communicate with the GPU without completely giving low level access to devs? MSFT should have created two versions of DX12 , one high level and one low level.

But back then there wasn't that huge of a backlash because of this. Great idea for a video! Keeping these companies in check is essential not only around the launch window. DF could make a game (or rather developer) award category about post-launch support/fixing games. Considering the commercial lifespan of these games on PC, it's important to put as much pressure as possible to achieve some results- someone has to and publishers or sometimes devs themselves get too comfortable once the initial outrage/complaints phase cools down.
    These days even AAA titles are often released in beta-RC technical stage, and 'v1.0' technical evaluations lose a lot of value anyway when it comes to purchasing help.

    Wow. I wanted to play Dead Space on my Steam Deck. I got it, and I refunded it. It was obvious that it just wasn’t there yet. I couldn’t get the game to run properly on it without being a blurry mess and without having my steam deck heating up so much the fan were screaming the entire time, to the point where I refunded it, not just because I couldn’t get acceptable performances, but because I was legitimately worried about it damaging my steam deck.

    I played through Dead Space back in march using Proton and my experience was practically stutter free on a 7900XTX. And even then, after the obligatory 360 spin around, the stutter was gone.
