Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

The Guns of Navarone
Some of my David Niven favorites were episodes from the tv series Four Star Playhouse.
Toss up between Around the World in 80s Days and Guns of Navarone. But honorable mention goes to Casino Royale a true classic with so many other great actors and actresses.
A Matter of Life and death (1946)
David Niven was a class act.
Not too many like him in Hollywood these days --- if at all.
He was from a different era.
And will be missed.
A real feeling of sadness in his voice when discussing his good friend Errol Flynn
Including the ALS.
The house he mentioned was called "Cirrhosis by the sea"!
I wrote a letter to David Niven Suggesting that he write a book of short stories and he wrote back saying that he had written this “ … novel, of sorts”. I had written to him previously and he also replied. So I own two letters from Mr. Niven From each of his homes in Switzerland and France. I cried like a baby, learning that he had passed away.
David Niven: Great raconteur; Great actor; and Great author. He died much too soon, but managed to make us all laugh via chat shows after his career was coming to an end. R.I.P. David; there'll never again be your like.
I've heard the story of Goulding's funeral recounted in Herbert Marshall's biography, by Scott O'Brien, but that didn't even come close to Niven's retelling of it. This is morbid comedic gold right here. Especially Herbert Marshall's quip about putting his prosthetic leg into "climb". That's classic!

This is one of the interviews he did where the early stages of motor neurone disease began to show. People had written in to say he was drunk.

David Niven was all class, and no one could tell a better, funnier story than the great British actors of his generation. It was odd and wonderful to hear him talk about smoking and chewing hash! I would've liked to have hung out with him. Smoke a bowl and listen to his stories.
David could make us laugh, I remember him in the 60s n 70s on this show. What a wonderful man.
I love both of these guy, Niven is one of the best story tellers, if not the best.
I'm a huge Flynn fan and did not expect to hear the early bit. Cavett asks great questions and I appreciate how direct his question about Flynn was. Flynn's life was tragic in some ways and Niven did seem sad when answering. Mr. Cavett, I discovered you via CZcams and love your respect for acting and artists and the insightful questions you ask.
If Goulding indeed planned it this way, he must've thought "Oh yeah, we need Niven there too so he can tell everyone how it went down!"
Niven was such a great raconteur because of the era of his filmwork. He knew all the film greats. Was always my favourite talkshow guest, along with Billy Connolly - the lively minds and anarchic humour. Too cruel that both were struck with medical conditions affecting speech.
I didn't know David Niven before watching this channel but I have to say he seems like the nicest man possible. Every time I watch an interview with him I somehow feel sad that I can never get to meet him.
If you've never seen a David Niven film try to find A Matter Of Life And Death (1946), Around The World In 80 Days (1956), Separate Tables (1958), and The Guns of Nazarene (1961). For Separate Tables, Niven has the unique distinction of being the only person to win an Oscar on the Oscars show he was also hosting.

If you enjoyed his interviews Pablo check out Peter Ustinov. During Niven's army service Ustinov was his valet (correct term is batman) he himself went on to become a great actor and equally great raconteur.

Niven was a consumate story teller. This clip makes me sad though. Niven's voice here shows the early signs of the motor neurone disease that ended his life less than 2 years later.
David Niven remains one of Hollywood's greatest raconteurs. ... And surely anyone who has read Matthew Kennedy's _Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory: Hollywood's Genius Bad Boy_ would be inclined to agree that Goulding could well have staged this funeral farce.

Those who knew Niven often said they never or rarely saw him angry. Dr. Gabor Mate (and others) have noted that ALS patients often share this same trait of denying their negative feelings. Yes, Niven played a charming character both onscreen and off but it seemingly cost him his life.
What a lovely, funny, expressive and humble man, with a kindly view of his fellows failings and an unparalled ability to express this. Sadly, you can just hear in his pronunciations the start of his Lou Gehrics disease, (a form of motor neuronns disease)......
Best story I have heard for ages .I could listen to Mr Niven talk for hours . As the daughter of an undertaker I am well aware of the fertile source for humour those very serious situations can produce .
david told peter sellers and others this story in about 1960.just after the funeral.sellers often recounted it to friends.he actually told it on the set of dr strangelove then as mandrake improvised the line the string in my legs gone talking to sterling hayden referencing nivens remarks about herbert marshall which the rest of the cast and crew recognised and fell about.kubrick was not happy despite his love of multiple takes having to reshoot it .he kept the line in though.years later on a us chat show the host said he and richard harris were the best guests because of their anecdotes .sellers said vis a vis harris habit of taking old theatrical stories and embellishing them to include him as most of his true stories i swear had been told about robert newton and wilfred lawson but go even further back, that can be embarassing.he went onto say he loved nivens story so much then told it that he often recounted it until it was him not niven that was there! i honestly believed in the end i had been there until he said i was telling it on the set of the pink panther looked up and saw niven looking at me! he was a real gent though over a drink later i started to apologise but niv said dont worry its a great story and your version sounds better!

The early stages of the malady that killed him a couple of years later can be discerned in the slight sibilance in his voice. It sounds a little like ill-fitting dentures, but it is not.
He was a great man, rightly revered.

….. I was invited to a lunch with my co-workers. I was in my teens and very excited to have lunch at Place Ville Marie, Montreal. Very sophisticated. That was when employers acknowledged staff… I digress.. at the next table was David Niven, with friends. I really tried not to stare. He sent a gracious nod to my table. I desperately ignored the next table.

Flynn was a talented, amoral, selfish, hedonistic, complete and utter shitheel. He destroyed himself and many of the people around him.
That said, he did great work in several of his movies. I would very much like to meet him, especially since I think we would be in a fistfight after about five minutes. A good fistfight never hurt anybody.
When our descendents want to know who we were, they'll only be able to go back to the 20th Century.

I find Dick Cavett excruciating to watch. Everything about him is so awkward. Merv Griffin was the best interviewer.
