      @@alice-kq3mf Just saw this film recently and not a day goes by where it's not in my thoughts. This film destroyed me. The pain and memories of a very similar, if not identical experience I had as a child came flooding back. The only difference between the two is I got to say goodbye. A whole 2 minutes to tell him I loved him and to please be ok before he died after getting hit by a car. This was long ago but I cried and cried hard. My best friend and I were inseparable also. As young boys we were best friends since we were toddlers. At about the same age of 13 he passed away right at that delicate age where I now know friendships are the most intense and never again did I get as close to anyone else. I'd trade years of pain that I've finally, as a result of watching this film, to be able to go back and relive those wonderful years with him. And to change the conditions for why he ended up killed because I do have a lot of guilt for what happened. To be able to finally let go and grieve the way I should have now has been so liberating for me. I also feel vindication for the love and the affection we had because I had no idea I wasn't alone, that alot of people had the same bonds in their childhood. I'll carry the weight of this film for the rest of my life.

    This film demonstrates how societal forces destroy the beautiful and innocent relationships that pre-pubescent boys enjoy. Leo’s big brother saw and felt deeply how severely hurt his little bro was and cuddled with him to reassure Leo that he is loved and cared for. This film is, as you observed, both beautiful AND heartbreaking.

    • @user-zw7xi2jd3q
      @user-zw7xi2jd3q Před 3 měsíci +2

      The scenes with Léo's brother Charlie were so heartbreaking and so tender. He put aside any hint of sibling rivalry or typical macho aggression between brothers and was simply there for him. With very few words between them and Léo sensed that Charlie knew he was suffering badly and gave him an alternate comfort space and tenderness that Léo had with his friend and sorely wished that he could get back. I never cried so much with any movie I have ever watched in my life because it did liberate years of suppressed emotions that I had regarding a similar friendship when I was a child that I have locked away all of these years.

  • @user-zw7xi2jd3q

    A week ago I saw this film. Had no idea it existed and knew nothing about it. A few minutes into it, I was losing some focus thinking it was another coming-of-age teen film. I was sorely wrong, It is far more than that. I think it should be required watching for every adult, especially men, regardless of how or what they view themselves as. The film destroyed me. I've cried every day for almost a week now thinking about this film and why it has had such an impact on me. It almost exactly mirrors my own experience when I was a child with my best friend, both of us right at that same cusp in age between childhood and puberty, who was killed in a car wreck and I only had 2 minutes to say goodbye before he died. The immeasurable love and tenderness that was instilled in this film still has me blown away. It's given me a chance to resolve an immense grief and locked away emotions that I have had for years trying to keep it away from my daily thoughts and there has been no one, absolutely no one that I have ever confided in about what he was to me when I was a child. Even though all of my family and friends knew we were close, I never knew how to convey to them how much this kid meant and how much we meant to each other. It was a solid, intense, loving and purely innocent friendship where we did everything together. Joined at the hip. This isn't a masterpiece from Director Lukas Dhont. It is an hour and 45 minute therapy session for a lot of people who need to watch this. So heartbreaking and so sad and at no point does it feel like the film is trying to jerk emotions from you that are contrived or a cliche or some kind of deliberate attempt at drawing tears from the viewer. The boys were phenomenal in this film and so were the rest of the cast. Everyone was utterly believable. Eden Dambrinne's portrayal carried the weight and unbearable pain for the last hour of this film. And liberated me from years of pain and anguish for something that I knew was very real. And I'm convinced that everyone has that one friend as a child that you wish you could get back and never lose again. Such a devastating film. But beautifully made. Watching interviews with the boys and Lukas Dhont later on proved without a doubt that they put their hearts and souls into this film. And are very proud of what they did. There is so much more than I can say about this film and it's symbolism with every aspect of it but I'm not. It's one of those films that is hard to describe without spoilers. Again, a must watch...

      A week later after having just watched this film I'm still crying every day because of it because I had a similar experience when I was a child. Unbelievably heartbreaking and sad movie. And so well executed by both the director and his young talent not to mention Leo's older brother in a supporting role who deserved much more recognition than he's getting.

      @@alice-kq3mfLéo's brother in the film, who I believe is actor Igor Van Dessel, yes had a small role here but nonetheless powerful. This film would've been nothing without all the cast and what they meant in the overall story. Léo's brother is the epitome of what a brother should be. I wished I had a brother to lean on when I had my similar experience years ago. His brother completely dropped all sense of sibling rivalry to support lèo in many ways that other brothers wouldn't think of or dare to, knowing how much his brother was in unbearable agony at the loss of his friend. It just made me feel more empathy for Lèo in a way that I've never ever felt for anyone else in any film, in large part because I knew that same pain years ago as a child. An unbearable loss that still effects me now. I still can't get over what this film has done for me. It helped me finally begin to mend and feel vindication after all these years. Thanks for responding.

I almost left the theatre because I couldn't stomach any more sadness, I had to look away from the screen and pinch myself to stop from crying out loud. There's more going on than friendship and the loss of it - Remi couldn't sleep and said "it's my brain" and his mother already had a no-locked-doors rule for him - so what was that? Suicide isn't a "normal" response to hurt and this isn't a film just about what we see on the surface. It's like a whole dimension of the film wasn't explored. Or maybe it was but not directly - who were the girls talking with Remi after the "break-up"? Leo focussed on one of them in the group talk - are we to think they somehow normalized/enabled Remi's self-harm? I'm just not sure why this was hinted at in the film but not expanded on.

    Wasted Potential: Dhont struck gold with Dambrine and De Waele. Yet, De Waele wasn't used in the last two thirds of the runtime - a talent squandered.
    A failed self-harm attempt could have been a cry for help, rekindling the fractured friendship between the boys. The families of the two protagonists could have had intensive conversations.
    Fragile bonds struggle in the harsh school environment.
    A third friend/boy at the new school could have provided unexpected twists and turns.
    Dambrine's ballet skills went untapped, missing chances for poignant moments.
    After the first act (the first third of the movie running time), the script lacked fresh ideas.

    I wish I could hug you and gently wipe your tears away. It’s so sad. I have tried ending my life a few times from heart ache. I am 45 now and I still don’t have love. I wish I had a close one. I do kinda have a close one but the person I am close too is too scared to be in a relationship with me and I too am too scared. I hurts because I know this person loves me and I love them too. I think we are meant to be together we are soulmates, but I think our fear we will never be together. We just hug now and them and hold hands but never anything else. It sucks that people feel that they can’t express their love for eachother because they are afraid of being bullied or losing their jobs or get in trouble with judgmental parents. There’s no one else in this World who I would what to spend the rest of my life with but we can’t be together. We are both too scared and it really hurts. My heart is broken. If I go with someone else I will always be wishing it was with the person I truely love and I will never be truely happy. I am happiest when I have the company of the one person who I feel safe with and loved from.
