Is Belgrade's Temple of St. Sava the most beautiful church on earth?

  • Belgrade’s Temple of St. Sava may just be the most beautiful church on earth!
With the completion of the interior mosaics, St. Sava rightfully takes it place amongst the most spectacular house's of worship anywhere in the world! Vogue Magazine compared St.Sava to "La Sagrada Família" in reference to years under construction of both churches, but St. Sava is about to cross the finish line, and the church is... just now open to the public!
    #Belgrade #Serbia #StSava #OrthodoxChurch
The grandiose sanctuary and under-lying crypt boast some impressive numbers and features...
    • St.Sava is the largest Orthodox church in The Balkans, and also ranks amongst the largest churches, mosques and temples worldwide! The dome structures are modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, but that is where the similarity ends. St. Sava is over-the-top when it comes to artistic opulence!
    • The church is gargantuan, and was designed to humble us mere mortals. Looking up, it seems incredible that Jesus’ outstretched arms spans 20 meters (66 feet)!
    • Over 50 million semi-precious stones and 24k gold Murano glass tiles were placed to create the eye-popping mosaics. They look like paintings at first sight... we promise that you will be overwhelmed!
    • The entire exterior is clad in white marble.
    • The scalloped fascia is made of brown granite, not wood.
    • It took 40 days to lift the 4,000 ton copper dome into place through the interior.
    • The temple was conceived and plans drawn in the late 1800s, but construction did not actually commence until 1935.
    • Thousands of workers have labored to construct the church over nearly a century, with over 300 artisans dedicated to the mosaics alone!
    • Every surface, from floor to cupola is covered in exquisite artistic detail.
    • There are 49 bells - the largest weighing in at 6.2 tons. On Christmas, the bells toll the Hymn to St. Sava.
    • The mesmerizing Golden Crypt is located 7 meters directly below the sanctuary. Don't miss it! The Crypt gleams with ornate golden chandeliers, and you can really get up-close and personal with the stunning frescoes!
If you visited and were impressed with Notre Dame, Cologne, Westminster Abbey, the Vatican, Hagia Sophia and the other great cathedrals of Europe... put this one on your bucket list! St. Sava is other-worldly, and worth a trip to Belgrade all by itself!

All right, Juan, but please study history. The sack of Constantinople occurred in April 1204 and marked the culmination of the Fourth Crusade. Crusader armies captured, looted, and destroyed parts of Constantinople, then the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The sack of Constantinople is a major turning point in medieval history. The Crusaders' decision to attack the world's largest Christian city was unprecedented and immediately controversial. Reports of Crusader looting and brutality scandalized and horrified the Orthodox world; relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches were catastrophically wounded for many centuries afterwards, and would not be substantially repaired until modern times.( from Wikipedia but facts are correct)

Because the phylosofph behind builing a temple/church is diferent. Romancatolic churches are built aiming high because in their phylosophy that's the way to 'touch' the heaven. Orthodox phylosophy is that when you enter the church or a temple you should get a feeling of heaven around you, like you entering a mother's woom, like God makes a shield of piece and joy by his hands around you. Tha's why in orthodox church you don't feel small even when the temple is as big as this one you feel clause to hevan, while in cathedral heaven is something way above so you're in constant aim to reach it. Architecture and art in a building, specialy a church are a kind of language to your subconcience.

    Just for the info...
Saint Sava was a member of the most powerful and most influential Serbian medieval royal dynasty. The Nemanjic dynasty. This family, which ruled Serbia for more than 200 years, produced 3 grand princes, 8 Serbian kings, 2 emperors and 2 archbishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Saint Sava was born in 1174 as the youngest son of the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty, Stefan Nemanja (born in 1113, grand prince from 1166 to 1196). When he came of age (in the Middle Ages this limit was 16 years old for boys) his father gave him a province (Herzegovina) to teach him how to be a ruler one day. But after only one year Saint Sava literally said: "I don't want this. I don't want power, money, titles and crown. I want to become a monk and devote my life to God". And so, at the age of 17 or 18, Saint Sava went to Mount Athos in the then Byzantine Empire. His father was against it at first but eventually accepted his son's wish. In other words, a prince just voluntarily renounced his power and went to a monastery! This is an almost unimaginable scenario in the entire history of the world, then or now! Especially now.
As a monk, Saint Sava became the greatest Serb of all time... Not because I say so, but because other Serbs who can carry that unofficial title said so. The greatest Serbian scientists, Nikola Tesla and Mihajlo Pupin, the greatest Serbian writer, Petar II Petrović Njegoš, the greatest Serbian athlete, Novak Djokovic... They all agree that Saint Sava is the man.
So what did he do? Saint Sava wrote the first Serbian code (with both civil and church laws), he wrote the first Serbian constitution, and he was also a writer (he wrote several books as well). He was a world-class diplomat, a polyglot, a great theologian and spiritual man. He was also a teacher, an enlightener and a man who built a large number of churches, monasteries, schools and hospitals. His most famous monastery is Hilandar, which is located on Mount Athos and which Saint Sava built together with his father, who also became a monk after he gave his crown to his son Stefan in 1196. Hilandar is also the first Serbian university.
But most important of all... Thanks to his diplomatic skills, Saint Sava managed to get recognition from the Byzantine Empire for the creation of an independent Serbian Orthodox Church in 1219. He also became the first archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church (Serbian Church became a patriarchate during the reign of Emperor Stefan Uros IV Dusan Nemanjic, but no Nemanjic was ever a patriarch). Because of his great contribution to Orthodox Christianity, Saint Sava was declared a saint Equal to Apostles, which is the greatest possible honor in the Orthodox world.
Despite the fact that the Turks, the Catholic church and the communists tried to destroy the memory of Saint Sava among the Serbian people and Serbian people in general, he still remained our spiritual father and the most important figure in the history of Serbia.

The is a Serbian Orthodox church which sits on the Vračar plateau in Belgrade, Serbia. The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important figure in medieval Serbia. It is built on the presumed location of St. Sava's grave. His coffin had been moved from Mileševa Monastery to Belgrade. It was placed on a pyre and burnt in 1595 by Ottoman Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha. The Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade is dedicated to him, built where the Ottomans burnt his remains

Saint Sava was supposed to be the ruler of Serbia, but he fled to Mount Athos (Greece) and became a monk. At the place where this magnificent temple is today, according to tradition, his incorruptible body was burned by the Turks because in addition to being an inspiration to the Serbs to free themselves from Turkish slavery, it also miraculously attracted the Turks to Orthodoxy. And I hope that this church dedicated to him will attract you, the people of the West. Praise God for everything.

It was a real privilege to live in this century and witness the completion of this grandiose church dedicated to the first archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church, St. Sava Serbian, from the XIII Century. Serbians are the parents of all Slavic people of Europe. Serbian alphabet is the oldest set of letters out of which the Latin and Greek alphabets were later derived. Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla gave to the whole world the knowledge of how to generate the three-phase alternating currents. In short, the Serbs gave to the world: the first wheel, the first calendar, (this is 7529 year). the literacy, and the electrical light. The first Christian Church was founded and built by the Apostol Jacob in 34 year in Sirmium, (Sremska Mitrovica), Serbia.
I want to thank to all Russian and Serbian artists who participated in creation of this unique artistic endeavor. Glory be to almighty God and His son, Jesus Christ!.

    To meni zaista nije jasno.
Da se hram nije izgradio bilo bi "pa što nije, pa kad će, pa državi sve preče od vjere" itd.
Zaista, nije se rodio ko je narodu ugodio...

    Thank you
Weier Outta Here ✈️ for the beautiful video! Saint Sava was the youngest from 3 sons of Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the holy lineage of Nemanjić. The royal dynasty of Nemanjić built the most beautiful Serbian churches and monasteries. Stefan Nemanja built the Đurđevi stupovi monastery(1171. year) and with son St. Sava monastery Studenica(1186.). After that, in the 13th century (1219,), Saint Sava and his brother Stefan Prvovenčan built the monastery of Žiča. Žiča is a monastery where 7 Serbian kings from the Nemanjić dynasty were crowned. A Žiča is also known as the seven-door monastery . It was the rule to make a door before each coronation, through which a new king would pass. After that, they would wall up that door, so that no one could pass through it anymore. In addition, there are many other monasteries and churches that the dinasty Nemanjić gave to the Serbs. Sopoćani, Gradac, Gračanica, Decani, Mileseva, and many others. All from the 12th and 13th centuries and most are under UNESCO protection.
Most of these monasteries are located near the town Kraljevo. If you have the time and opportunities, it is definitely worth visiting Kraljevo and these monasteries, as well as Vrnjacka Banja (the most famous and largest Serbian spa), mount Kopaonik (the largest ski center in Serbia) and church of St. Peter and Paul from the 9. Century(Based on a 6th century church) near town Kraljevo (Kraljevo on English it means Kings town).
You are always welcome here in Kraljevo, 170 km south of Belgrade. I hope to see you here. Greetings from Kraljevo!

If you are interested in mountaneiring, few kilometers from Maglič fortress, you have Stolovi mountain, one of few mountains in Europe with wild horses on it, with stunning nature (google it)... From Kraljevo, in 100km radius you can easly visit (i recommend rent a car) a lot of other things... (Golija mountain, Kopaonik ski center, Ovčar-Kablar gorge (with about 30+ medival monasteries, also known as “Serbian mount Athos”), Stari Ras and Koznik medival fortresses, Etno villages on Rudno/Golija mountain which gave you best what Serbian cuisine can offer to you, Goč mountain etc)... i hope you will enjoy your time here in Serbia... (sorry for not perfect grammatics in English :p)

Serbia finally gets a Tier A attraction, or in restaurant parlance three Michellin stars, something worth taking an entire trip for on its own. I saw it a few days ago for the first time. Saying it's spectacular really doesn't do it justice. It really must be seen in person.
It is worth noting that the entire history of Serbia is laid out on the walls of the crypt... from Medieval rulers to people who perished in WWII under the Nazi and Ustasha rule and were canonized as saints. Not a single era of Serbian history was left out.

Very beautiful! And something seemed familiar and familiar to me. That's what I also see here. This is not a foreign temple for Russians either. After all, it was Russian artists who created a unique mosaic decoration with a total area of more than 15 thousand square meters.
In November 2020, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic awarded the author of the mosaic decoration project of the temple of Academician Nikolai Mukhin with the highest award of the Republic of Serbia - the Order of the Serbian Flag of the first degree.
The Church of St. Sava is one of the main cult long-term buildings in Serbia. The decision to erect it was taken by the authorities of the kingdom back in 1894. But then there was a long period of planning and coordination of the project and other historical events. Work on the cathedral was restored only in May 1986. The dome was completed in 1989, and in 2004 the official opening of the unfinished temple took place. Most likely, he had to spend a long time in this form, but in the early 2010s Vladimir Putin visited the cathedral in Belgrade. The Church of St. Sava made a powerful impression on the guest: outwardly almost completely finished giant structure, and inside - bare concrete. The now deceased Patriarch of Serbia Irinej asked Vladimir Putin if Russia would have the opportunity to help decorate the temple? To which I heard a confident: "It will be!"
And already in 2014, a competition was held for the right to beautify the Temple and according to the results of it, a project was approved, which was implemented by the workshop of the MMO "UNESс0 Foundation" under the leadership of the People's Artist of the Russian Federation, academician Nikolai Mukhin.
Ga*z*p*rom Ne*ft took over the financing of the work on the creation of the mosaic of the dome and the altar church of St. Sava in Belgrade - which is almost 3.5 thousand square meters of mosaic.
The mosaic was created in Moscow, in the workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts. Later it was dismantled and sent to Belgrade, where the brought mosaic fragments were mounted on the walls of the temple.
