- A dog fight based on the up coming movie Top Gun: Maverick. I have not seen the film so all of this is just my 2 cents.
This vid was extremely difficult as most of it was filmed real time to include the carrier landing (yep, I landed it from 3rd person). Track files for the Tomcat have been horrendous lately to include server files.

I watched this movie at the IMAX theater. I would have to say I haven't had such excitement in years. It just lured me into the cinematic world and it threw me into the F14’s cockpit! All dog fighting sequences are well filmed and choreographed and this is the once-in-a-lifetime movie experience we won’t have in the next couple of decades. This is the movie which was spectacularly shot to blow the roof of the theaters, and totally I’ve been splashed!

I saw the film last night and the similarities are crazy!!! I had no insight whatsoever when I made this other than the flyby at the end and the fact that there was a fight based on the trailers. The dogfight itself was just me capturing a real-time fight with the Felon. Thanks for to everyone for watching it!
The fight was your own. Checked your comments to see if you watched it before you posted it but it seems like this was really good and to be exact your own battle. I was wondering if the F 14 still do have that capabilities to duke out with those 5th gens i was thinking* of a self modernize design for a F14. Hope i could get your answer
@@dwaynev6593 In terms of a legitimate either Fox 2 or guns only dogfight, unfortunately the Tomcat would get eaten alive against a competent 5th Gen pilot and an experienced Tomcat pilot. If the Felon driver is inexperienced, the Tomcat pilot might be able to use some unique tricks to get a quick high aspect shot but it will still be very difficult. The Tomcat’s best chance of survival is BVR and even then it’s a stretch as we don’t really know how stealthy the Felon is.
@@RaptorDad Here's the thing, the Tomcat's best turn rate is when it's below 400 knots, a function of it's low stall speed, when it's moving at 550 knots it can pull 9g with the wings swept back, 450ish if the wings are swept forward.
We know this because Dale Snodgrass did a 6 second 180 turn with the wing swept back at about 500-550 (550 if my accelerated stall calculations are right) and the plane can pull 10 g without breaking, we know this because a pilot flew his plane back from an exercise area and landed it at his base after pulling 13 g.
The F-14D may or may not be g limited to 7g though probably not but it will tattle on you.
The problem however is the trust to weight ratio, as this dictates how quickly you bleed speed and energy in the turn and how quickly you can recover it.
@@pogo1140 Definitely fair points but in a knife fight, TVC negates the high g due to the pitch authority it affords. All it takes is one good Fox 2 (in the Felon’s case the Archer which is an absolutely lethal missile) and it’s game over. If it was legitimately drawn out to a guns fight then the here is where it could be beneficial again, depending on the experience of the pilots. The blended wing design of the Felon is somewhat similar to that of the Raptor which retain a lot of energy in turns as well. All we can do is speculate about thrust to weight as we don’t have hard numbers.
@@RaptorDad The aggressor F-15 and F-16 drivers learned from fighting F-22's that you bleed the F-22 of energy by staying above the F-22 so that it when it tries to use it's TVC, it runs out of energy and they can drop down on it and gun it to death. This tactic is similar to what an F-14A driver said about how to fight against F-15's and F/A-18's
as a navy veteran i was lucky to see the F-14 on the flight deck on its last year of operation 2003 on the Kitty Hawk.. i worked on the sea hawk helicopter at that time.. i can tell you the F-14 was the best looking aircraft ever made but it was also the most dirtiest aircraft. On the belly of the jet it was all hydraulic fluid it was a nightmare they said fixing it. Thats why it couldnt last as long as the airforce F15 and F16…

Navy flight operations are hard on equipment for sure. I would imagine the cost wouldn't be as high to maintain if it was operated from land bases. Slamming down on a pitching deck seems brutal.
All of those decades of operation, hours of flight, and stress on the airframe will do that. They really stopped making most of the parts for them well before the end of their service life just to keep the Iranian’s from getting their hands on any spare parts. There were other multi-role planes that the Air Force and Navy were vested in instead of interceptors going all of the way back to before Top Gun was ever made. It’s a beautiful jet though.
I watched the movie in 4D and it was the best feeling ever the motion everything was exact and this DCS recreation made my day

My respect to the developer and creator of this exacting video, took me back to the old good 80's, but once finished and back to present, wich is not movie or video game, this dog fight would never happen, and if it would, the amazing F14 Tomcat would never get away with this victory over this kind and generation felon fighter.
Even though the F14 is old and replaced by the F35 and F18, It is still one of the best fighter aircraft that is still loved by millions to this day.

Today was my first movie in three years that I sat in a theater here in Henderson Nevada! I got there early due to my challenge. I don’t do steps. Well, enough of that.
The movie “Top Gun - Maverick”. Well, I did not know what to really what to expect. Well recalling the first one decades ago it was the same pattern as the first. Nothing new there with the exception of new fighters. With one exception, one Tom Cat!
Even with several new actors and new planes I thought it was very entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
That’s pure Awesomeness! I’m picking up what you are putting down regarding your challenge. Glad you were able to overcome it and see it in theatre!!!

I did this scenario against an AI one after I watched the movie the 2nd time. Go vertical wings out flaps down after the merge guns on him every time. When I switched him to ACE... Well thats a different story 😆

We did quite well when VFA103 went to Nellis and Tyndal against F22s and the Joint helmet with Aim 9x. Thrust vectoring was mostly no help to the 22.

It starts with these questions. How loaded is the TomCat? How skilled is the pilot? The Tomcat does have strengths. It has excellent energy management. Its cornering speed is awesome. It can climb. It can turn. It has a massive top speed. It does have a crew of 2. It has the vertical. It can do a one circle fight but the two circle fight is it strength. It can sustain high 9 plus g turns. It does not bleed energy in certain flight regimes. Its strength is both bvr and close quarter high speed merges at 450 knots or better. Flyby and nose up then turn and rain down in a two circle or run for the deck and go for a rate fight.
It has massive radar that was updated to pesa and some aesa at the end so it can pick up the stealth at about 5 miles.
If you lock your rudders up it has massive sustained turn rate. It loves the rolling scissors. It can do a high yo yo extremely well. And it cobras like a champ.
And it has great nose authority. Not as good as the Felon. But.
The felon still does not have its best engjnes. It does not have the best stealth profile. It has a similiar turning rate at cornering speed as the tomcat. Its a big plane.
Its thrust to weight is better plus it does have 3d vectored thrust but that bleeds speed if not used correctly. It can climb. It has better radar and off bore shot capability but countermeasures null that by the tomcat. It is a god in a one circle fight. But a two circle high energy pass nulls that.
It can go UFO but if you bleed too much energy for that and end up dead due being a sitting duck. Smoke in your rear real quick.
Strategy.
If not shot down in BVR. Come in to merge with maximum speed at 600 knots. Hope felon goes one circle. Nose up and create distance push turn at 450 to 480 knkts with full rudder. Hope the Felon overshoots or tries to vector for nose authority. If he does. Pour on afterburner and nose down for guns shot in the hud. If success the great. If not he is in a poor energy condition while im in high energy. Run for deck full tilt. Pull full rudder. Pull air brakes to corner speed.
If he runs for the deck with me the great. If not then no air brakes and pull up toward sun at max thrust to get high on him with high energy.
See where this is going?
The tomcat loves speed. Felons love using tricks and 3d thrust vectors. Pkay to your strengths and his weaknesses.
This would be a great matchup.
The felon would destroy a tomcat, sorry. Your saying it doesn't ha e that good of a stealth profile? Source would be nice, the f14 would be able to pick it up on radar.
The felon could just take him to high altitude and roll over and force compression stalls which was always an issue with the f14 until the D.
Added to the fact the su57 can track the tomcat, by heat and even jam tracking guidance on heat seeking missles. The tomcat only chance would be BVR, which is negated by the su57 stealth. It wouldn't be able to track it. Even with the current su57 engines it thrust to weight ratio is still better than the su57.
The thrust vectoring also gives it a tighter turn circle than the f14 with its variable swept wings.
2 circle or 1 circle wouldn't matter the su57 would out perform the f14 a through D.

The main song is from Ace Combat Assault Horizon titled “Decisive Battle” ironically, you fight a Su-57 during that fight as well. The second is the main theme of Top Gun Maverick. Should be available from the main soundtrack.

Thanks! I think this was a combination of the 5th and 6th attempt. The first two attempts I wasn’t paying attention and I flew right in front of him and he guns me immediately. 3rd, I learned they leaned too much on thrust vectoring and I could out energy him. I was lucky they didn’t get smart and push burner earlier. That thing accelerates like crazy! Most of time they would unload, get supersonic and just orbit above me in a matter seconds.
Felon apparently forgot his helmet for HOB targeting... (just like in the movie)

Man I wonder what it must feel like for the SU pilot, being shot down when you have a aircraft that has variable thrust vectoring and you lost to a F-14 Tomcat
If you lose, you lose to the opposing pilot, not the plane.
Its just a movie..
Well when you look at it in reality, the faster you are moving the less effective thrust vectoring is. You wouldn't use them to do something like a cobra maneuver if you were at mach 1. It would rip the wings off. But in a slow turn fight it's king.

@@rustyreese4006 Yeah, a VERY slow turning fight. At typical combat speeds it’s not much of an advantage. NATO aircraft generally don’t drop to the speeds where thrust vectoring makes much difference because they have vastly superior engines and can maintain more energy in a turning fight.
In any event, the pilot makes the most difference. If Maverick is supposed to be the best pilot in the USN, he could probably fly the F-14 and still own most pilots in anything but an F-22 or F-35. And the Su-57 isn’t in that league.

Umm, yes and no, respectfully. An above average pilot of a Felon, with the technology and maneuverability is just way to much for an old bird of prey like the F-14. Throw a F-15X with a master pilot of that platform against a SU-57, you stand a reasonable chance to fly away alive. Throw in a Raptor vs a Felon, you’ve got a fight I would pay good money to witness if it were attainable. The Raptor, I believe, would hold an edge in maneuverability over the larger frame Felon.

But if an F14 pilot were to let an Su57 within visual range in a close up dogfight, then it's game over for the F14 UNLESS the pilot of the Su57 is a cretin....lol
The F15 is more manoeuvrable than the F14 close up......and an Su 57 is more manoeuvrable than an F15.......plus the technology/weapons gap between the 2 planes is vast.......

Yeah, this does happen in the movie. Maverick shot down two SU 57s at the end of the movie. The 3th SU 57 was shot down by Hangman. It seems that the US doesn't really need F22 or F35 when good old Tomcats can do all the work.

@@tiagodagostini If a T-38 can get an F-22 kill (a Rafale and an EA-18G have as well) the old fighter can as well, just luck and skill and having 3000-4500 hours of flight time in the jet.

Regarding the flaps, no earthly clue. Seriously surprised the military advisors didn’t say something about it since they were so involved. For the flares against the SAMS, the only thing I can come up with is it looks better on screen. I think chaff would show up just fine as long as you add a bunch of shimmer visual affects but it’s just my guess.

When I played DCS back then I just said screw it and drop both when using F-15C to avoid missiles

The Tomcat is a 13G airframe the felon is only gonna give 9 due to the Dfcs a Tomcat ypu can bend and break. The Gen 5s will not let you

I think the F-14 would be able to hold its own against an SU-57 as they're aerodynamically similar but thrust vectoring nozzles on the SU-57 would make it difficult to get the angle of attack.
maybe if they upgraded the avionics of the tomcat it might have a chance

Bet bet could have used an F-35 Charlie, now used by the navy, although the weapons are not in-bay for the Charlie prototype used by the navy as opposed to the F-35 A, though would have been more realistic than the Tom cat
