  • Valarie Stewart sits down with WDW Pro to tell the real story behind Walt Disney's Song of the South, Splash Mountain, Zip-a-dee-doo-dah and the trailblazing actors who were the first black movie stars. Find out the truth about James Baskett, Hattie McDaniel and Nick Stewart. Discover how Nick Stewart spent his acting money made from sometimes flawed roles to run a theater that was used to raise up so many future African American stars. And learn how since the 1940s, people of a certain belief have worked hard to tear down what he and his wife, what James Baskett and Hattie McDaniel, accomplished.

Still, Disney is erasing history rather than acknowledging and educating. To me, getting rid of SM is a cowards way to express how much they’d rather erase a period in time rather than educate. Such an important interview. I have been trying to explain to people how Song of the South is ABSOLUTELY NOT RACIST!! It is based on West African folklore. It is a wonderful story with great wisdom. It had great acting, wonderful songs (I had the book and the record as a kid)... And it is something that African American people should be proud of and demand more of. Instead Hollywood is just race swapping Eurocentric stories which should be an insult!!!
I was beside myself when they said they are burying it!! The same goes with Aunt Jemima. She was one of the earliest successful Black business woman in America. The photo the white leftist America got so up in arms about, is Based on a real photo of her in clothes that were the style of the time. The same goes with Uncle Ben!!
And in Song of the South, THAT WAS AN ACCURATE DEPICTION of Deep South. Like the woman said, "black white green or whatever. That is how people talked" .
These soft as hell leftist want to erase this history and THAT is true Racism!!!!

This is yet another shortsighted, knee jerk decision made by Disney that could potentially have disastrous consequences for the parks, especially the Magic Kingdoms. There is already a capacity issue and now a popular, high capacity attraction will be closed for years and when it reopens there is no guarantee that the replacement attraction will be nearly as popular. This could turn into another Journey Into Imagination debacle with potentially even worse results.

WDW Pro, Can I add a little bit more to this interview. Walt Disney wanted to tell the tales of early American tales and folklore and put onto the screen. James Basket won an Acadamy Award for best actor and the song Zip-a dee Doh Daa won for best song. The NAACP noted the remarkable artistic merit of the film at the same time griping about some of the things it did'nt like. The film had some favourable reviews. One from Herman Hill for the Negro newspaper the Pittsburgh Courier said in part " The truly sypathetic handling of the entire production from a racial standpoint will prove inestimable good in furthering interracial relations". On it's release the film was a major money-maker. The civil rights movement of the 1960's sparked protest amongst certain Negro groups about the film. By 1970 Disney said it was to permanently withdrawn. Disney received so many letters from people wanting to see it . That in January 1972, Song of the South was reissued to overwhelming nationwide reaction. It was one of the most successful reissues in company history. As someone said, " No matter one's political leanings or racial attitudes this film has some of the most delightful moment's Disney ever captured on film." Richard Williams ( animation director for the Rodger Rabbit film) Gave a talk on live action and animation. He said Song of the South was the gold standard. He did'nt even know how they shot some of the scenes. A little trivia, the last time Disney's Multi Camera was used. Was for Jessica Rabbit's dress in the nightclub scene. All the people standing on the bridge at Splash Mtn last night singing Zip-a-dee Doh Daa as the last log's came down the drop brought a tear to the eye. May I also suggest you take a look at a video on U/Tube for Disneyland Easter 1978. Can you thank Valarie for me, for telling her fathers story. Cheers, Chris Perry.

I love Splash Mountain and Song of the South, and it makes me even sadder that they closed it after watching this. They go on and on about equity and equality but then they trample upon the legacies of black people.
RIP Valarie ma’am,😔🫡 We will remember your father’s legacy. while we’re sad your gone, we’re also happy that you are with your parents and that you don’t have to witness anymore of this messed up world.

Wow. Powerful stuff. Such a distortion of history. This reminds me of the "jimmies" controversy in the North East. Many call Jimmies "chocolate sprinkles" but up here they were always called Jimmies here which people back in the 90's started to say was of racist origin. While the term does date back a little father, the use of the term around here started taking off after the Jimmy Fund promotion where a portion of the price would donate the the cancer fighting fund (some ice cream places still do it). Regardless of the actual origin, people will always find racism when they are looking for it. Similar to Stalin's KGB head Beria's boast: "Show me the man and I'll show you the crime." (Show me a beloved cultural matter and I'll show you the racism.")

Collateral Damage is the phrase that comes to mind here. Disney should be ASHAMED of their actions here.
HISTORY is HISTORY...its Neither BAD or GOOD.
The PAST is the Teacher to Find the Path to the FUTURE. And Those who Do NOT LEARN About the Past are DOOMED to Make the SAME MISTAKES that People Made in the Past.
Its INFURIATING to see Not Only the Same Mistakes being made Today but those Mistakes are SO MUCH WORSE.
ERASURE is the Only Means to DEFEND the ARGUMENTS for CONTESTATION.
FACTS, Recipts, These mean EVERYTHING to the MEMORY of a Person's LIFE, their IMPACT and SIGNIFICANCE that in This Case was Hard EARNED is Now being...DISCARDED.
Witlessly, Thoughtlessly, Recklessly this has been done and in Doing So ERODES, DEMEANS and DESTROYS ALL the PROGRESS Made Since then.
They Have NOT Improved ANYTHING, they've DENIED the BIRTHRIGHT of a NATION to be HONEST ABOUT their SHARED HISTORY.
This was NOT a RACIST Production OR a RACIST Attraction. It Was a CELEBRATION of Black AMERICAN Culture being Just AMERICAN at the End of the Day.
What has been Done here is a DENIAL of FACT, a DENIAL of Truth, a DENIAL of TRUST and an Absolute DISREGARD of AMERICAN SOCIETY.
As a CANADIAN I am Shocked and Appalled at just how Immense the INCOMPETENCE and COWARDICE of the Collective Disney Board for Their ABANDONMENT of STEWARDSHIP for the ART of the Walt Disney company from that Era.
And now here the ABANDONMENT of True EQUALITY, the PRETENSE of GOODNESS has been Truly LIFTED from the Monstrosity that the Company has become today.
    This Action IS RACIST.
    This Action IS EXCLUSIONARY.
    This Action IS COWARDICE.
This Action IS ONE Among MANY Now that PROVES EXACTLY Just How DETRIMENTAL the Current Board Members Are to the Company, To the Public, To the Nation AND to True Progress.
    They ALL MUST GO.
    NO MORE FAILING MISERABLY UPWARDS!!
    NO MORE GOLDEN PARACHUTES.
    NO MORE AWARDS.
    NO MORE BONUSES.
The Disney Executives are INCOMPETENT MORONS and They are DESTROYING EVERYTHING.

I agree with her that we today are too focused on how fundamentally different we are instead of see each other as fellow human beings that are much more alike than different. I hate when SJW tells people to behave and look in certain ways according to their "race" or skin tone and must be different than "white" instead of just let people be. I hate the very first thing people from both sides think and judge on is the person's skin rather than personality and talent.

How is that shown at all on the ride? The story of Brer Rabbit is originated from African Folklore. The movie itself displays insane racism. The characters on the ride? The story? This is black history that’s being erased. Disney lost the opportunity to cease this moment to educate people. Set up videos talking about the making of Splash Mountain, the movie and the history that goes behind instead of hiding like a bunch of guilty white people who know nothing about black history. Really proves this wonderful lady’s point. They’ve been so hush hush about the movie and everything about it, people don’t realize the real history. Shame Disney won’t hear this woman.
