  • In this video I am cleaning old rusty auger with vinegar bath. I will use this auger on my log cabin build witch I will build only by hand tools. I'm also showing you my other hand tools that I use to build the log cabin. So stay tuned for the next videos coming soon!
When I was 20 years old I decided to build my dream log cabin, all by myself, in the middle of an off grid bush.
I chose the traditional method - using only hand tools. My father taught me how to work with wood from a young age, but I have no experience with building a log cabin, so I'm learning everything as I go, and I'm looking forward to what this experience will teach me.
It was a big struggle to get this opportunity to be able to work on my dream, but I finally did it and for that I am incredibly grateful. I also started this CZcams channel where I share my entire journey, so if you are interested, you can check it out. There is no one behind the camera, so I do the filming and editing myself. I would also very much appreciate if you would support my journey by subscribing or sharing, if you want to.
Here I'm sharing my journey with you. Thank you all for your attention. Enjoy!

Hy!. I'm very happy to see, that a young person recognizes the value of old tools, that's rare.
The 1916 drill is a treasure. Three tips: The vinegar thing is actually unnecessary, even counterproductive. You have seen for yourself how quickly the unprotected surface, because it has been acidified, rusts again. I only clean old iron with a wire brush, by hand or with an angle grinder. Then WD40 is unsuitable as a preservation as it evaporates very quickly. I have had very good experiences with simple engine oil (SAE 30). Rub in and wipe off the excess. Prevents new rust for weeks. Last: It might be a good idea to refinish the lag screw at the tip of the drill with a triangular file.
All the best! Georg (from Germany)

Thanks for the great tips Georg!
As for the lag screw at the tip of the drill, did you mean to sharpen the thread? Or make a sharp tip? I'm not sure what it should look like.
I would also like to ask about sharpening the drill, do you have any tips? I don't know if I should sharpen it only from the inside (as in the video) or if it is also necessary from the outside?

    • @georghalder2816
      @georghalder2816 Před 9 měsíci +3

The tip of the drill should look like a wood screw. This pulls the drill into the wood. If the tip threads are too worn, clogged or damaged, it will not work. So clean the threads, then try to see if the drill is pulled into the wood. If not, then you have to sharpen and file the threads. There are also special files for this, but in my opinion you can also do this with small triangular files like those you use to sharpen saws.
As for sharpening the drill: From what it looks like in your video, you're doing it correctly: from the inside with a fine round file. You only sand on the outside if a burr forms on the outside edge when sanding from the inside. I then remove it with a whetstone; the whetstones for sharpening scythes are well suited for this.

Brilliant. Just found your channel and watched all 5 build videos immediately and immediately subscribed. I shall definitely be following along with interest.
Nice tools. Cannock is in the midlands of England, just north of the city of Birmingham. Once known as the Black Country (the whole area) and a centre of industry from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution straight through to probably the 1970's and the age of industrial decline. Very sad in a way, but the people had hard lives, surrounded by dirt and pollution and much hardship.
But here we are now and it's great to see that spirit is still alive in the work you are doing. Best wishes from England.

It's really interesting. What I like about quality hand tools is that they have a history. I bought this English auger in the Czech Republic, and now this auger will help me build a log cabin here in Croatia. I can only wonder how much work the auger has done over the 100+ years.

@@MattJacob1 Oh yes, thanks for the reply. I only just noticed it.
Yes the auger has done some travelling, around Europe at least. What tales it could tell. You are continuing the story. Best wishes.

For future reference when you use an acid to clean iron/steel you need to immediately neutralize it in a bath of sodium bicarbonate and water, dry it fast as possible and then oil it. Even used motor oil will work for it.

Cornelius Whitehouse and sons! On the Walsall road in Bridgetown, Cannock, Staffordshire, UK. Unbelievable. I used to drive past their old buildings daily on my way to work in the early 2000's! I think it's been demolished now. They were famous 'back in the day' for their quality cutting tools. Ah, small world.

Also at www.gransforsbruk.com/en/ you can find a lot of tools for building a log cabin. They also have a great draw knife there.
