Glenn Miller Orchestra - Moonlight Serenade

  • "Moonlight Serenade" is an American popular song with original music by Glenn Miller and subsequent lyrics by Mitchell Parish. It was originally named "Now I Lay Me Down To Weep." When Miller recorded "Sunrise Serenade" in 1939, he placed this song on the back. It was an immediate phenomenon as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller's signature tune.
The most striking part of the piece was its use of clarinet-led saxophone section, which is widely considered the classic Glenn Miller style. The first eight bars of the melody follow the form of the 12-bar blues. The song is a premier example of the American big-band sound from the mid-twentieth century.

My dad died in 2004 at the age of 83 and loved this song. He was a world war two vet and loved this country so much. As I get older it makes me realize more each day how proud I am of my father and all those who lived in that era and are now gone... it's really sad because they are almost all gone now. If you see a WW II vet (or even your grandfather who may not have been in the service), give him a hug and thank him. Life is short, and then all we have are memories like this song to make us cry

So it was really nice being able to see/hear this video of him playing with the Orchestra. He's in the middle row, 2nd trombone player when looking from left to right. At 0:52 they show a close up ❤ RIP uncle Cary. I love you!

We had a wonderful marriage and full of music. I now have a lovely legacy consisting of 4 children 9 grand and 12 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. They are all full of love and happy. If music be the food of love play on l say. Eastbourne in july they have swing bands that come and play and last year on the anniversary of my husband and l meeting on a blind date on a very rainy night 11th july 1957. We spent 62 wonderful years together. Long live the swing bands l say!!!

I've seen the movie so many times that I can't even count, even bought the DVD. "In The Mood" just makes me want to get up and dance, but my favorite is "Moonlight Serenade". His band does a great job of playing his music, but I hear some differences from when he played. It's a shame we never got to hear other 'sounds' he might have created.

Many of the tunes from the 30'sand the war years were superb; but his is most certainly one of the very best. I grew up listening to them as my parents played this music. Both are gone now and dancing to them again with Glenn Miller!

So beautiful, good American music. My father used to play this on our record player when I was growing up, and now, he plays it on a CD in the car. This was the song he and my sister danced to at her wedding too :) I wasn't born until way after Glenn Miller's time, but listening to this makes me feel like I'm right there.

A clarinet playing the melody over the harmony of 4 saxes with a tenor sax playing the same melodic line an octave lower.........The Glenn Miller reed sound lives on!

WOW. As a saxophone player, I played this and many others "in the day". I agree with so many others who have commented, this music will never die and can not be recreated.

My parents would dance to this when it came on the radio and when it was over I believe they were misty-eyed,I know why now. Wonderful-ah-wonderful, or is that some one else.?

Bruce Nuckowski I recall my parents having the same sentiments with this song, and many others from that era. There truly were many great bands and great songs from that time.
