  • Today we opened up a 1979 OPC Hockey wax pack and pulled the Great One's rookie card!
In this episode of Vintage Breaks, Leighton opens a 1979 o-pee-chee hockey wax pack. Leighton rolls the dice and they land on ten. He then randomizes the list of names ten times. He opens the pack. The first card is going to be right under the gum. The Minnesota North Stars team card is the first to be pulled from the pack. Lyle Moffat is the second card to be pulled from the pack. Michel Plasse is the third card to be pulled from the pack. Greg Fox is the fourth card to be pulled from the deck. Hilliard Graves is the fifth card to be pulled from the deck. Bernie Federko is the sixth card to be pulled from the deck. Réal Cloutier is the seventh card to be pulled from the deck. Jack Brownschidle is the eighth card to be picked up from the pack. Leighton starts to cheer. He says "We got one!". The ninth card in the pack is a Wayne Gretzky rookie card. Greg Polis is the tenth card in the pack. Harold Snepsts is the eleventh card in the pack. Derek Smith is the twelfth card in the pack. Bobby Clarke is the thirteenth card to be pulled from the pack. Mike Rogers is the fourteenth and final card in the pack.
Each week, collectors from all over the world gather on Vintage Breaks to watch Leighton Sheldon, Mike Eisner, and their crew opens up vintage sports card packs and boxes live on Facebook Live, CZcams, and Periscope.
It's a truly unique experience in the hobby that you can be a part of. We open up packs that are 50, 60, even 70 years old right in front of you, and everyone has a shot at getting these cards.
    How it Works:
To participate, visit www.vintagebre... and check out the available breaks on sale. Purchase a spot and you'll be entered into a drawing for that group. Once the group sells out, the real fun begins.
The picking order is chosen randomly before the break begins, and the box or pack is opened live on air. Everyone participating will get to see what they've won instantly. The cards are then shipped out to their new owners.
The really cool thing about opening these vintage packs and boxes is that it's making history each and every time. The amount of fresh material still in the original packaging is slowly becoming extinct. It's always fun to unearth these cardboard treasures and share them with the card-collecting community.
Remember, you don't need to buy a slot to get in on the action. Most of our fans simply tune in and watch for the excitement of it all.

OMG, that is the nicest OPC Gretzky RC I have ever seen, that without question has to be a PSA 10 - no doubt about it.... Usually OPC cards have those rough edges - that card doesn't have them and the centering is absolutely PERFECT - what a hit.... That's easily a $250,000 card...

Gretzky was #9 when he was a kid because he idolized Gordie Howe however when he moved on to another team #9 was already taken, Gretzky was pretty upset so his coach told him "why not just be #99?" - and that was the birth of the legendary #99 and obviously he wore #99 his entire career.....

Sounds like a Black Hawks fan! One of my all-time favorite hockey cards in general is the 1974-75 Tony Esposito card. It is a great shot with classic goalie angle and profile. I have that complete set but am upgrading for centering purposes. Finding that card with even 60/40 centering is a project.

To you new collectors out there. Card Saver 1's or semi-rigids are what PSA recommends on their site to use when sending in cards to be graded. Using penny sleeves has the propensity to do damage to them by catching the corner and edges. They also slide fairly well into the semi-rigid and wont stick like glossy or chrome cards.. As for using gloves, old cardboard like that doesn't take fingerprints well on the surface. The front surface isn't glossy or chrome like modern cards. Dry hands are fine when handling vintage cards. It's a tried and true story.

MAN would I love to break a dozen packs of 79-80 OPC, but I don't have $10,000 to drop on a dozen packs.... I do own an OPC and Topps Gretzky rookie and I have the majority of the 79-80 OPC and Topps sets, I really don't see the value in dropping 10k on unopened packs... If I want a vintage card I usually just buy it instead of buying unopened material unless it's at a price I cant pass up.... I mean I just bought a raw OPC Mario Lemieux RC for $75.00 which would probably grade out to a PSA 8 and a box of 84-85 OPC is like $3,500, so I saved myself $3,425.00, lol...... Yes, I know it's likely a collector could pull multiple Lemieux rookies out of one box and perhaps a PSA 10 - the thing is you're not guaranteed a PSA 10 - so you would really have to hit a PSA 10 to justify $3,500 for a box and even then I'm not quite sure a PSA 10 would go for $3,500..... I just looked it up and rookie Lemieux's go for exactly $3,500...
A Gretzky PSA 10 on the other hand - the sky is the limit on that one.

You are absolutely right. Every card he touches loses value once it gets a fingerprint. No big deal with the commons. But for a card that sells for over a million, if it grades high enough, this video acts as documented evidence that the card was handled with bare hands. Worth much less than a card with documented evidence of it NOT being touched. Chances are, the uncut sheets weren't touched after being surfaced, but this video is undeniable proof that the card was.
