My two cents: I'm in the middle of writing a book currently so I don't have as much energy to write outside of that! I'm always excited to hear your remixes/remasters, though, even if I keep this a bit short. The clarity of the double kick and bass working in unison is a treat, especially considering how muddy the drums sound in the original; here, they're as clear as day and pound like hell. The level of detail you send back into the song is always a treat, with there being so much more to listen that the basic, pan-left/pan-right tracking of '80s Metallica's loud-ass rhythm chords and snare drums, but reduced bass and entirety of Lars' kit lost in the roar. The guitars, here, still sound fat as can be, but I actually hear the kick and toms. Every. Single. Beat. It's great. The bass is audible but not too loud. Everything gels as usual and I couldn't be happier. As someone else said in the comments, I'd kill to hear the whole album like this. Nice work! \m/
Yeah the drum mix kills FFWF, even makes it hard to hear the proper timing on the main riff since the snare is on the off beat and the kick is on the on beat, but the kick sounds like a muted wet blanket so your ear drifts to the snare instead. Took me almost 20 years, and Ahdy's remix, to learn to hear it properly, and I still struggle when listening to the original.
@@Neo-Midgarto be fair, it’s the same with Battery and Blackened. I like to believe that James wrote the riffs so that the timing wasn’t always certain.

maybe part of Lars' motivation for turning the drums way up and the bass way down in AJFA was bitterness over how badly his drum parts got shafted in RTL's original mix
That's the best tune of their best album IMHO. That relentless double bass, and that killer main riff really capture the essence of Metallica's thrash: fast, energetic, brutal. Took them ages to play it live again and properly, they did only recently.
My fav Metallica track is Creeping Death but I grew up having this album on loop and it's Trapped Under Ice that always stood with me as the track I associated with it. Maybe because I never really heard it mentioned outside of listening to full cassette?
This is that Metallica song that you never list when someone asks for your favorite Metallica songs, but every time you hear it, you're just like "hot damn! that's one of the best Metallica songs!" This remix/remaster just brings that into a starker light.
That's why we always list it as one of their best :) (the best IMHO) - they didnt play it live enough due to Lars being a lazy fuck, but these last years he's finally decided to get to work and they brought this track back to its well deserved glory.
Wild that in these early records you can’t hear the drums (thanks for the fix, Andy!) and now every Metallica release has the drums louder than everything else by some margin.
I know, the new song "72 seasons". I love it, but the far too obvious near constant hi-hat is kind of hard to peel away from when it's so loud in the mix, other than that, it's a great song. Would be nice if Lars would move around the kit a bit more but at basically 60, I'm not expecting AJFA pt 2.
@@senditkevin Lars seems to have gained a knack for just constantly riding the hi-hats on the new record, even during pauses, it's kinda obnoxious if I'm completely honest.
