It is like a time capsule watching videos from the 80s, Irina. Did you notice the sign for the movie Fletch starring Chevy Chase?
It took me years to figure out the first line of the chorus, "In a West End Town, a dead-end world..."😆
Pet Shop Boys have had some great hits over their time, and also done some good underground tracks. They even did a track where the verse lyrics make sense read from the last line, upwards. (One Thing Leads To Another)
Since I have been pretty free about expressing my dislike for some of the music videos that you have reacted to, it's only fair to say that I give you a big thumbs up on this one. This was the second version of the song, and it peaked at the No. 1 song in the U.S. in May, 1986. This is a perfect example of why I loved the music of the 80s. Șo many unique songs and videos, arguably more than any other decade in the modern era. I agree with you completely about both watching the video and listening to the song. To me, it expanded the art form, rather than detract from it. So glad you enjoyed it!

Agreed. The mid-80s were peak music times for me as a young teen. Videos like this really take me back to those long-gone times with a bit of happy and also slightly sad nostalgia. This was a huge debut number 1 in the UK in January 1986 (nearly 40 years ago now!)
The PSBs were all over the place until the end of the decade, racking up eleven more top 20 hits including the Christmas number 1 at the end of 1987 with their cover of "Always On My Mind" and two other number ones ("It's A Sin" and "Heart").
@@coldwhite4240I really think one can say that 1967-1996 was the pinnacle of pop and rock music. Its been down hill since then, with some exceptions. But the trend downwards is definately clear. Mostly due to DAWs and autotune. Its not an artform any more.

I was lucky to be a kid in the 80s. Internet started, cell phones, faxes, email. MTV played real music videos! The best movies and fashion, but the music! Everything came out new in the 80s! All new genres and sub genres of music....hard rock, heavy metal,speed/thrash metal, death metal, progressive rock,post modern punk, new wave, techno, electronica, raver, rap, gangsta rap, hip hop, the Seattle sound/grunge...all came out in the 80s!!! That will NEVER happen again!!
It is my understanding that the West End refers to West/Northwest of the River Thames; that the East End refers to the East/Southeast of the River Thames. It is also my understanding that the 'East End' references the previously more impoverished areas, whereas the 'West End' references what is considered to be the more 'Posh' part of the London area. Since after the song and video were released, there was apparently quite a bit of development of the 'East End' - such as Canary Wharf, etc.

This is not a comment on this video. I just want to talk to you. I watched some of your video reactions to my favorite female singers (personally I don't think men necessarily have to sing). If music hits you so hard that it brings tears to your eyes, then that's totally okay. This happens to me regularly too. Especially with this young lady named Aurora. If you don't want to cry, don't look for her on CZcams. Especially not for “Murder Song,” “The River,” or “The Seed.”

PSB was one of my favorite bands and I'm so happy because I'm 50 and I will see them for the first time live in november. West end Girls is a classic with a social message which is applicable everywhere. But above all was a real hit and put the PSB on the radio.

Now compare this song of east end boys longing for west end girls to another hit in the US. Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" another 'oldie but goodie'. Uptown is really uptown Manhattan and comparable to London's West End. Pet Shop Boys is definitive 80's new wave british rock but Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl"'s theme is somewhat the same but the rocking is much harder. Take a listen. This was is big hit it's day.

Think about your city or some you visited. In the Northern hemisphere, winds tend to blow Eastward. Durring industrialism, the smoke and smells blow East. The "East Side" is almost always left the "cheap end" and the West is posh. Learn history 👌
