  • Day 812. Today, further to the fast-evolving situation on the front lines, we reflect on how Ukraine might win the war, the ‘theatrical’ nuclear weapons drills being carried out by Moscow, and look deeper on the political fault-lines of Central and Eastern Europe.

Being afraid is exactly what the Russians want. There is only a very small chance that they will ever use nuclear weapons. And that chance has not increased any lately. Even China doesn't want Russia to use nukes. If Russia used nukes, even "battlefield nukes", it would almost certainly bring the US into the war and that would be the end for Russia. Putin knows this. However Putin wants us to be afraid of him and to think that the chances of nuclear war are much higher than they actually are in order to prevent support for Ukraine. Fear is the real enemy. Slava Ukraini!

On May 22, Russian forces launched a series of strikes with drones and missiles on Ukrainian military facilities in the rear regions. During the day, explosions thundered in several cities, including Dnipro (Dnepropetrovsk) in the east of the country.
Footage from Russian reconnaissance UAV confirmed the successful results of the strike in Dnipro. The attack targeted the local Aviatorskoe airbase that hosted different Ukrainian aircraft. The local residents confirmed that the black smoke was raising from the airbase as a result of the attack.
The airfield was struck by Russian Iskander-M missile reportedly with cluster munition. The attack was coordinated by Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAV.
The analysis of the footage confirmed that the missile struck the parking lot of the disabled Yak-40 and the MiG-29 of the Ukrainian Air Force. The fire seen on the video confirmed the explosion of the fuel or ammunition of the MiG-29 fighter.
The depletion of Ukrainian air defense allows the Russian military to facilitate its strikes in the Ukrainian rear, including far from the frontlines. Russian reconnaissance UAVs face no obstacles coordinating the precision strikes on the strategically important facilities.

Ukraine has been striking oil refineries, not oil drilling facilities. Thus, there would be no effect on global oil prices. In fact, the price of oil may actually decrease because it would force Russia to export more oil that she can't refine.
Also, if anybody representing the US government, (State Department, DOD, etc.) on official US government business is urging Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries because it would hurt Biden's reelection bid, that person would be violating The Hatch Act. I don’t know how it works in the UK, but it's illegal to actively campaign for a political candidate while conducting official US government business.

Thanks once again for a very interesting, if not sobering podcast today. I am a Brit living in France, wanting to be European. However, I am reminded, once again of the lack of linked-up thinking amongst the sleepy Western Nations to the absolute need for united co-operation between all countries that are threatened by what certain other parts of this world are already collectively wanting and planning for - right now ! Our cherished democracies are under the greatest threat ever, the time for unity and joint action to protect our values has arrived. It seems so obvious to us individuals who watch events as they are being played out by growing numbers of authoritarian nations who are planning their moves. The Russian war in Ukraine is just one of the moves towards their ultimate goal. It is highly stressful to observe, like watching a class chessboard. The lack of urgency from our leaders, who are too afraid of paper tigers, to take the necessary decisions to at least acknowledge the need for an organised joint debate. I fear it is might already be too late to halt the change that is desired by power-hungry dictators and their blinded followers !
The first obvious step has to be : Give the Ukrainians the right to fight back and defend themselves how they wish and remove this unbelievable caveat to not fire back at their enemie's territory. The huge monies being spent to provide weaponry will be totally wasted if it cannot be used efficiently - and correctly !
    Slava Ukraine !

If Russia lobs a nuke or two into some highly populated city in UK or USA, US cannot even retaliate. Look at the map. US/UK/EU pack 20 times more people in 1/3rd the land. Nuke exchange is terrible for US and UK.
And if China joins in (they do have a pact with Russia), then USA will be the way it used to be before white people invaded, killed 12+ Million native Americans to create USA in the first place.

Ukraine's weapons production capabilities were lost in 2005 with the help of the West. the West intensively bought machine tools as scrap metal for pennies. The workshops where tanks and guns were produced were repurposed for warehouses of multinational Western companies. Russia is economically stronger

Forbes today estimated Ukrainian mineral resources at 15 trillion dollars. This applies only to the territory of Donbass, Dnepropetrovsk and one other region, I forgot which one. If Ukrainian mineral resources are worth so much, the question begs to be asked: what is the value of Russian mineral resources, since Russia is the richest country in the world? The West has so far invested about $600 billion in the conflict in Ukraine, which is 26% of all dollars that are in the United States. If a person invests a quarter of his entire property in such an expensive project, costing more than seven times his entire property ($2.26 trillion), then it becomes clear that this person will not stop halfway. Therefore, world war is inevitable.

I have a question: We have seen a complete shift in warfare with homemade low cost drones using off-the-shelf components, I wondered if we can expect to to see homebuilt guided missiles? The longest range Qassam rocket's produced by Hamas which runs on just sugar and fertilizer have a range of about 16km, however these fire indiscriminately, now with Inertial Navigation Systems & GPS being so cheap it seems like a possibility.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed on Thursday a decree allowing for the use of United States assets in Russia as compensation for Russian assets seized by the US. The measure was taken as Western allies moved to use assets frozen as part of sanctions against Russia to help Ukraine.
The assets liable to be liquidated by Russia include movable and immovable property and securities. The decree states that the Russian Government Commission on Control over Foreign Investments will be able to compile a list of assets to be used as compensation "taking into account the principle of proportionality."

The Ukrainian Armed Forces acknowledge that Kiev might have to agree to loss of territory in order to end the conflict in Russia, ABC reported citing commander of the 57th Ukrainian armed forces Brigade, Colonel Alexander Bakulin.
According to Bakulin, the current conflict will end with peace talks and a subsequent peace agreement, just like any other similar conflict. The TV channel notes that Bakulin seems ready to accept that Ukraine would have to agree to territorial concessions, like Finland did during the Soviet era.
"Yes, it lost some territories. But it still does exist as a country and Russia doesn't even look in that direction. We are in a similar position, but I hope we will not lose our land," the colonel said.
Bakunin added that the Ukrainian forces try to stabilize the situation at the frontline, but the Russian Army "continues to achieve constant success" in the Kharkov Region. He also noted that the situation for the Ukrainian forces remains "rather difficult", because fighting goes on, while the US military aid has still not been delivered.
Previously, Ukrainian commander-in-chief said that there is a threat of Russian forces circumventing the Ukrainian troops in the Kharkov Region. Kiev admits that the situation there is extremely tense.
Russia has repeatedly underscored that Western arms shipments and training of Ukrainian soldier only prolong the conflict and do not change the situation on the battlefield.

The point IS, Russia invaded Ukraine, the US and UK have signed the treaty of Minsk , that allows them to defend Ukraine, if Ukraine was attacked after giving up their nuclear weapons ( which Russia ALSO signed) So legally the US and the UK could give Russia an ultimatum to get OUT OF UKRAINE (within so many days)_ or else face military action from the US and UK ( with NATO ever present) The US already warned Russia that ANY USE of nuclear weapons, tactical or strategic, would bring down a world of hurt on Russia's military and Putin may be a dictator, but dictator's LOVE POWER, and Putin would lose all in a nuclear exchange.
