    SM57 + A81WS > any other microphone in existence. Seriously, save yourself a ton of cash, just combine the two, and forget about worrying about your sound. No plosives, no background noise, no nothing. Just. Sound.

    Desert island mic. For sure. If I could only have one mic forever, it's the 57. Not a U87. Not an RE20. Not a $50,000 vintage tube condenser. Just the 57.
    You can make the 57 work on absolutely everything, give or take some post processing.
    While it is industry standard for snares, guitar cabs, etc, you can mic the entire session exclusively with 57s and mix an amazing sounding album. Vocals, string instruments, acoustic guitars, everything.
    It's not the BEST at any one thing, but it's great on everything.

      That’s the weird thing, it is the best at one thing.
      It is the best at mic’ing up guitar cabinets.
      Granted, most big studios are not using single mics for their guitar sounds, but it still is fairly uncommon to see a guitar sound that doesn’t use a 57 somewhere.

  • @artysanmobile
    @artysanmobile Před 4 lety +35

    It’s always surprised me that the SM57 is so vastly more flattering for vocal use than the SM58, which is actually promoted for the purpose. I actually like the 57 both live and in the studio. It suits some singers perfectly.

    • @NKWTI
      @NKWTI Před 4 lety +6

      Agree fully, it's unreal. I think it's mainly due to the dispersion the grill does, it's creates that chop/dicey effect with the voice. I'm willing to bet that if you unscrewed the grill and maybe threw a stocking pop filter in front of it (or bought some sort of foam screen), you could get a very similar or maybe even exact results, but I don't fuckin' care, I still "prefer" the sm57 for vocals. I have about 2 hand-fulls mics of in my collection of different price ranges that I carefully picked based on sound...and imo are amazing...and sometimes even obscure in my collection...and yet, I still feel that the sm57 rivals/holds its own against some of the most solid, smooth, well-balanced sounding condensers you can find out there at any price range and is among one of my all-time favorites. This very fact alone should really excite beginner home studio people who need an affordable mic they can quickly grab, especially since the added bonus of being a dynamic means their room noise won't matter as much. As far as SM58 goes for vocals...I absolutely hate it out of the box.

    What an amazing workhorse of a mic. It sounds just as quality as a high-end condenser mic somehow and is just such a classic for a reason. The fact that if you start a small home studio and can get this fucking thing for $100 and optional screw on wind screen for $18 is just unreal. I have mics of all different price ranges under $1000 and this mic is still in my top rating. I always wanted one and just ignored it for some reason because I had some other dream mics I wanted first and figured it'd always be there to buy and will always be cheap to buy, but when you stop and realize what the hell this is...it's just goddamn amazing for vocals, straight up. Love it more than SM58 imo, I also have Shure BG 3.1 stage mic which isn't too shabby as well.

  • @From_A_Diverging_Timeline

    3 years later and still a good video. Just got mine recently, new to recording but have been playing music for a long time. I can agree the sm57 sounds really good on miking guitar amps. The few test recordings I have taken sound great. I'm running two amps with as wet dry rig. One amp has effects or distortion on it, one amp is clean. Using a couple different mics sounds great. A tip to anyone recording guitar with a lot of effects or distortion record a track of your guitar clean so you can blend in the clean tone. * edit * having a clean tone to blend in can give you a lot of definition back when using lots of distortion or fuzz. Also running two amps while you jam, one effected one clean sounds great for the same reason. You can use an ABY box to split your guitars signal into two outputs.

I purchased this exact mic hooked up with the same interface (Scarlet 2i2 Second Gen.) and the noise floor is very apparent in recording. Love your reviews! Hey I've got a quick question if you'll indulge me. When you inserted the Fethead you say you dropped the gain from 75% to 20% - Does that mean you dropped from 7.5 out to 10 to 2 out of 10? I've got both the Behringer UMC202HD and the Steinberg UR22MKII and on both of these units I need to run the gain at 10 out of 10 without the Fethead and 6 out of 10 with the Fethead, if I want strong enough volume to not have to adjust audio in Post. Does this sound right to you? For this video did you record at 2 out of 10 and then adjust the volume in post? Thanks.

      Howard Olsen It shows in the doobly doo that he added +6Db in post which could equate to a decent amount higher than 2/10 to achieve the same volume without the boost.

    It's a staple for guitar amps to be sure and surprisingly I have seen a few people use it for spoken word. I had no idea the White House used it on a podium also. Haha

    Amazing review as always! Tbh I was not into audio equipment at all, but one day I needed a standalone mic (fuck gaming headsets) and ever since I've been watching your videos. Even if most of the time it's not items I would ever purchase lol.. so far I've got myself a rode nt1 after watching your review, a Sennheiser e835 and now I'm sold on the SM57.
    My only concern is if my Scarlett 2i4 will have sufficient gain for this mic... Getting a cloudlifter or something similar is completely out of the question, because they do not sell them in my country and buying online is nearly an impossible task here lol

    There are about a billion low-end Shure knockoffs. I can vouch for the GLS Audio ES57/ES58 as being dead-on clones at somewhere below half the price (I actually kind of prefer the ES58 to the SM58 and think it's a little more like the SM58 Beta, but that could just be me, I haven't done a frequency analysis or anything). And, similar to the SM57/SM58, GLS's are basically indestructible.

    would that shockmount work for an audio technica ath2005? I've been looking around for a shockmount for the mic since i'm moving it around a lot on the boom doing video music lessons and obviously it's super noisy doing that without a shock mount. thanks for the reviews!

    I know I'm a bit late with this post; still . . .
    Am I the only guy who spent at least 5 minutes trying to "unscrew" the plastic bit?
    The business end of the SM57 is so small, it's easy to omit plosives without resorting to wind screens or pop filters. However, with my voice, both the a2ws and the a81ws help reduce harshness for spoken word. Currently I'm partial to the a81ws (I call it "the pillow" and it works best when I brush it with my whiskers), but I go back and forth.
    Speaking of plosives, I only know of two people who produce plosives with the force you do in your reviews, and they are both cartoon characters. :-)
    I bought the SM57 because I was advised, back in the day, that "if you only have one microphone, make sure it's the SM57." I've bought a sold a number of microphones since then, but I've always kept the SM57. It's just a good, all around mic. (I'm an old radio guy, so "back in the day" means the Pleistocene, but it's still good advice.)

    • @CortMarshal
      @CortMarshal Před 6 lety +4

      The blue encore 100 is the overall winner between the SM57 and Sennheiser e835. The e945 would beat both of them, though it's more expensive. It's worth it with the ten year warranty from Senn

    I have a Behringer XM8500 and even though its a $20 microphone it still kicks ass! with my mixer i have eq settings on it so it sounds 10 times better than it should, people who have a blue yeti have even said that my mic sounds better than it and for a little under $100 you could pick up a mixer with eq and this mic and have near perfect audio!

    Would you say the background noise rejection is better than with small condensers mics having similar housings?
    Afaik the effect of dynamics is mainly that they need much more amplification and thus you are getting much closer to the mic... which of course does also minimize room noise.
